Two week period- and going!

I’m fifty. Up til now periods pretty much regular as clockwork, though very heavy

Got this one a week early and still going, though not heavy, two weeks later 😱

Is this menopause..? Anyone else had this?

Me too and I'm a similar age. Had a 16 day stop start period which would not let up, fresh blood most days, some smallish clots. Then thought it had finally stopped, only to bleed after sex last night. Now really quite worried...I still have fairly regular periods so not fully into menopause yet. Feel like the lining of my uterus is not shedding properly.

It’s rubbish, isn’t it? This is my first proper weird period but I’d rather they were shorter and further apart as opposed to longer. I Have child free time now over new year but no chance of a festive shag with thus going on! Plus o think it’s making me tired.

So is your period still going? I was so happy when I thought mine had finished, then had sex for the first time in ages as not bleeding only for it to start again!

Yes.. that’s fifteen days and still proper going... so rubbish isn’t it? Is this what to expect?

Are you going to ask your GP about it? I'm not sure how 'normal' this is in perimenopause.

I don’t know.. partly why I posted here. Is it worth bothering the doctor or par for the course?

50 here too and having stupidly ling periods. Had one that lasted nearly 3 weeks, a break of 10 days then started again! They have also been very heavy and clotty. Nurse prescribed Tranexamic Acid and iron tablets. Due to see Dr on the 31st.

Yep me too - day 16 here and still quite heavy.
I'm 51 and recently periods are every 3 weeks so last year, I got quite anemic so have had some tranexamic acid and iron supplements.
Need to go back and get more (run out right now and nowhere has it OTC at the moment)

Oh no! Mine had been mentAl, like the Somme and I felt so I’ll. Got tranexamic acid. Then one shorter light one. Then this mad long early one. Though at least the mad bloating has gone

I guess I'd like to know whether a referral is important or not. In some ways I want things to be checked out, but on the other hand my health anxiety just ends up through the roof. I'm playing Dr Google all the time when I should be enjoying Christmas

Yes, I’m not sure either whether to go to GP or just accept it as weird perimenopause thing. If it doesn’t stop I’ll have to go though.

I'm 47 and finished a whopping 26 day period on 23rd December. I thought it was never going to stop! Like you OP, my periods are heavy and tend to last 6/8 days, but this was ridiculous. I tried to get an appointment at the doctors in the week leading up to Christmas but couldn't get one, despite calling every day. I'm going to try again this week. I'm sure it's just perimenopause, but hope this isn't a sign of things to come!

Still going strong and cramps too. I’m fed up so going to make gp appointment

@MadamePewter let us know how you get on. Are you also in the perimenopause age range? Perhaps we can be reassured this seems to be pretty common? Good luck you get this sorted!

It's common.

There is not a lot they can do except give you more meds- tranexamic acid- or offer to fit the Mirena coil.

You might benefit from iron supplements as long term heavy bleeding makes you anaemic.

I have both Transexamic Acid, and a Mirena coil fitted, and am on a 14 day period. Seemed to peter out a few days ago, and now back again with avengeance.

Mirena coil stopped my very painful periods (fibroids) but I hoped it would also completely stop my wretched periods until I had gone through menopause. I'm 54, will this never end?!

I'm going to contact the Dr. I wish ours had a menopause clinic or specialist - is there any such thing?

I had the mirena coil before and just bled constantly so don’t want that again! I’ve had tranrxsmic acid to reduce flow but will it stop beefing entirely?

I wonder about an ablation to remove the lining of the uterus. It often seems to stop periods completely so sounds like a good idea if childbearing days are far behind us,

My 'period' started August/Sept of this year and hasn't stopped since! I ignored my symptoms until I nearly passed out twice. GP has put me on Provera and iron tablets. Scan showed fibroid and cyst. I am now waiting for further appointment for Gynae dept. Has anyone had treatment for fibroids and does it work? I just want my life back!

MadamePewter I am hoping with treatment (whenever that will be) I will go back to a 'normal' life. My advice to anyone here, please do not ignore your symptoms. Get help and sooner! Good luck everyone and hope 2020 brings us all health and happiness 😊

I'm 53 and have had very heavy periods for the past three or four years, some going on a while.

I recently had a hysteroscopy to check endometrium and fibroids. A mirena coil was fitted to try and calm things down. That was in the first week of December. I've had some bleeding every day since then and over the last few days it has been getting a bit heavier again. I also feel like I have permanent low level PMT now and a level of anxiety with it.

Of course, some of that could be down to the fact that I have been struggling with a severe chest infection over Christmas, but not all of it.

My thinking has hardened since having the mirena coil fitted. I'm now almost ready to throw in the towel with it. My system has caused me so many problems over the last few years that I now wonder why on earth I even thought about doing anything that would preserve it (anxiety about going out, having to hide in toilets due to flooding etc.). What the fuck was l thinking? My children are grown up, more or less, DH had a vasectomy as we were done.

So I am now seriously thinking of pushing harder for a hysterectomy. I feel it would give me my life back and take away a lot of the issues that have caused me distress over the years.

Visit your GP. Don't suffer in silence.

I’m feeling exhausted and tearful which isn’t like me at all. Thanks to the advice here I’ve just rung and booked an appointment with a really nice female GP. Fingers crossed.. though it’s not for two weeks 😱

@Topseyt They tend not to do so many hysterectomies these days as there are other treatments with less risk- such as an ablation.

Hysterectomies for heavy bleeding are considered old fashioned now - they can have many drawbacks such as issues with prolapse in later life and a hyster is a major op.

For women in their 50s- like you at 53- the odds are you will be post meno in a few months or at least a year or so. Another reason not to have a major op.

Give the Mirena time to work and also discuss an ablation.
