hi,
will be there

Egypt · 25/06/2007 12:18

dd can't wait to see your ds, slim!

OP posts:
Rojak · 25/06/2007 12:54

Sorry girls - I may not make it tomorrow. DD is running a temperature this evening and I'm going to take her to doc's tomorrow to make sure it's nothing more than temperature as DS will be on school hols next week and I have visitors coming.

Sorry about this - will try and organise another meet up soon (perhaps on the beach on the east coast?)

cheers

Egypt · 25/06/2007 13:07

hope she is ok soon rojak.

beach idea sounds great!

OP posts:
quokka · 26/06/2007 07:48

Hope shes feeling better Rojak .

Great meeting you guys, both of your dc are gorgeous! Slim after putting your number in my phone I managed to not save it! Anyway will head back to delta next Tues - both my boys really enjoyed it.

Well that was entertaining just had the man in to fix my oven and I couldn't understand anything he said. God knows if he can even fix it! I have a feeling this is going to drag on and on

Rojak · 26/06/2007 13:58

DD is fine - just something viral which will work itself out - fingers crossed DS doesn't get it.

Funny enough I had to get the oven fixed when we moved in here too and the oven repair guy told me that they always had to come out and fix ovens because local families only used them at Christmas time for baking and the lack of use apparently caused some problem with the heating element.

We will be away for much of July and August so will try and organise the beach meet-up for September?

Egypt · 26/06/2007 14:47

great to meet you too quokka. 10am next tues then?!

hope you get your oven fixed. always something going wrong in this place, literally never ending...... hope you have better luck with your place. i'll text you slim's number now.....if i have saved it!

Hi Rojak,

Hope your pretty DD gets better soon. Are you off to Malaysia or dublin?

Quokka, lovely meeting you too. And thank you so much for change of clothes!!
I changed DS little gym schedule so happy to make tuesdays at delta a regular thing.
Good luck for your busy week.

quokka · 27/06/2007 06:19

well windows are now going to be done on Fri (I hope)!

Just had a nightmare at cold storage. Why do they have such little trolly's? Trying to fit 2 boys and buggy and shopping doesn't work . Went to pay with credit card and they don't accept them . Only had $240 on me in cash and the bill came to $270 so had to take some things out. Then the girl couldn'nt work out how to do that, and the line behind me was building up with angry people . Then both boys start bawling and screaming, and I started raving . I'm never going there again out of pure embarrasment.

On a good note the boys had their haircut without too much of a fuss at that place in United Square - thanks egypt

Egypt · 27/06/2007 07:27

oh dear quokka. whole country expects everyone to have a maid! hence no double trolleys, etc. sorry to say this chinese girl's friends dont want to work - who i was telling you about yesterday. she is going to ask her classmates when she goes back to school. Go to Jelita Cold Storage at the bottom of Sixth Avenue/Holland Road. It has mini trolleys for each of the kids to push around, they can fill them and you can have your own. much easier. It is a nightmare otherwise. You need to open a bank account and then you can use NETS - (debit card)

Our grocer's number is 67731566 They are Bestway Groceries. Speak v good english and I've never had problem with them. They have EVERYTHING

OP posts:
quokka · 27/06/2007 08:18

is that the grocer that delivers to you?

I must say I came back to the flat and called the maid agency . The maid that I liked is coming here on Sat to meet ds1 and dh. If things were a bit easier in this place I wouldn't get one, but everyone expects you to have a maid.

quokka · 27/06/2007 08:40

my 2 boys with their own trolly and free run of the supermarket? I have a feeling that may not work, maybe I should get dh to try it first

slim22 · 27/06/2007 11:32

Hi,
had one of those supermarket moments too today. Thks God have only one to deal with!
Quokka, take it easy. Even if we have it quite easy here in singapore, it is a shock to the system settling in a new place. You've only been here a few weeks. Take Egypts advice and get that grocer to deliver on your doorstep. Keep trips to the shops short, just for fresh and deli stuffs untill you find help.
In the meantime you can try:
www.birthandbeyond.com.sg & www.anza.org.sg for babysitters to have an extra pair of hands on shopping trips or be on stand by while you have work done in the house.
Good luck

slim22 · 27/06/2007 11:39

Don't rush for the maid. You don't want to regret it later.
Personnaly, we decided it would fit our lifestyle and are going for it.That's the life change we wanted by coming to Singapore.
Having moved 3 times in the last 18 months, we wanted a steady presence in the house, not yet another succession of faces and moods for DS.

Think it through with DH, in the meantime just get a few hours babysitting/maid to see you through first few weeks.

Egypt · 28/06/2007 02:30

yes thats the grocer that delivers to your door. actually better than that - your kitchen! one day whilst i was chatting outside, he came in and put my cold stuff in the fridge too! did i text you the number? think so

babysitting service is a great idea, i'd never thought of that. personally my dd wouldnt stay with a stranger but you could ask them to come and help you with shopping etc, then they can at least amuse/push the kids around whilst you get stuff done.

SOMETIMES i go to the supermarket whilst dd is at school, but most of the time it works like this - i go to the swiss butcher on hillcrest road, get a load of meat in for the week or two. get them to vacuum pack it for freezing, then have the grocer pick up stuff to go with it. i take the meat out on the morning, the grocer phones about 9am, i ask him to get fresh stuff to go with it; veg, salad etc. i usually have rice and pasta galore but ask him to bring that if i need to stock up. i usually need milk every 3rd day or so. bread too. you literally can get them to deliver what you need just for that day. i'm just not so keen on them getting my meat. its nice to look around the supermarket, when i can be bothered, for interesting stuff for dd as she's rubbish at eating much other than rice.

OP posts:
Egypt · 28/06/2007 02:39

grocers are also great for the big stuff like nappies, loo roll, cleaning stuff etc. they literally can get you anything and you can be specific about brand and type too.

OP posts:
slim22 · 28/06/2007 04:50

hey,
babysitting is really helpfull.
DS would never ever stay with any babysitter. But when we moved to Amsterdam, I used to have the cleaning lady come twice a week rather that just once and do 2 hours cleaning/1 hour ironing and stay another couple of hours to come with us on shopping trips or play with DS while I was catching up on mail/work. It is really nice when they get used to the same person being around. Everybody feels more confident after a few weeks.

quokka · 28/06/2007 05:04

ok that all sound fab will give him a call when I get boxes unpacked.
