hellooooooooo,
thanks for keeping me posted Egypt. I don't come her so often now.
Qhokka, guess you have a tall hubby???? Also been looking for 2m long beds lately. Been pretty much everywhere, so can talk you through where and how much if you want!!
Even been to IKEA today!
pfffffffffffffff i've really had it with shopping malls.
OK for soft play at delta tomorrow or thursday.

quokka · 19/06/2007 11:20

sounds good slim. I think we were thinking of soft play next week, but I might be wrong? I'm pretty busy this week, but please tell me where I can get a really nice long bed PLEASE!!!!

I feel like all I've done since I got here is shop shop shop, I'm a bit tired of it as well - never thought I would say that

Egypt · 19/06/2007 14:16

yeah next week, tues or thurs. can't do this week really

OP posts:
slim22 · 20/06/2007 02:17

OK meet up next week.
Beds:
Try the plaza furniture mall on beach road.lots of shops, wide range of quality and prices. Sale is on so if you see something you like don't hesitate to ask for the sale price.
Some headboards can be costum made in 2 weeks and the sale apllies there too so ask.
I'm getting my mattress from sleeppost. they have good quality swiss matresses tempur style, way cheaper.
Not much in the way of kids facilities though.

You can also try Harvey Norman at the millenium walk at marina square. It's a big home furnishing store. wide range.

At the park mall on Orchard, you will find top of the range. Not necessarily the best. Omazz shop has top quality latex allergy free mattresses and very nice designs.

Now, if you like big chunky asian style wooden frames, head for dempsey road and get the mattress separately.

good luck

quokka · 21/06/2007 05:18

thanks for the bed info slim. Will try and go to sleepost as they seem to have lots of longer beds . Have heard good things about dempsy rd so will head there on the weekend.

Right seriously thinking of getting a maid? Have looked into part time ones but they are quite expensive? Also dh is working really hard and will be doing alot of travel, so I will be like a single parent for a while! He also wants us to go out in the evening when he is around so we can have some "us time". Anyone got any good agencies they can suggest? It sounds a bit complicated with all the paperwork? Also would like to hear some good and bad stories of anyone has some??

suzywong · 21/06/2007 05:21

hello quokka, how's things?

quokka · 21/06/2007 05:39

hot and grumpy today! Hence talking about getting a maid! And you - how are the potatos going, have you got the tyre yet

slim22 · 21/06/2007 10:07

hey

only agency I can recommend is 121 personnel in the far east plaza shopping centre near the hilton on orchard.
Their name keeps popping up in all expat magazines I see.
I hired a full time maid through them. Process really simple. They have been in the business for a long time and really seem to know what they are doing. You say what you are looking for, they line up candidates, you interview them, when you decide they do the rest.
Most of their staff is transfers from other expat families leaving singapore.
Strongly recommend you get second opinion, from your relocation agent maybe?

works out maximum S$750/month all inclusive. I say that's money well spent if it can stop husbands from nagging about this and that.............

Rojak · 21/06/2007 10:48

I'm in the process of hiring one too but have been very laxed - trying to avoid agencies and instead go for word of mouth recommendation from families who are leaving.

A few friends have done this and they get a chance to interview maids as well as get references from previous employers. Tap your mums network to see if anyone knows of anyone else who is leaving.

Tip from another long term expat - you can do the transfer yourself online for about $40 or pay an agency $250 to do it for you if you find a maid who can be transferred from another family to yours.

mrsmalumbas · 21/06/2007 10:53

Can't meet up but just waving to say hello - lived in Singapore for 8 years and have many good friends still there. Could really fancy a mooch round Orchard Road (sans children) and a dip in the pool. Sigh. IKEA is pretty good for beds but be warned the sizes differ for bedding etc. We bought a lovely teak bed from Demsey Road but when we returned to the UK discovered that our UK mattresses are 10cm longer than mattresses in Singapore so we can't get a mattress to fit it and it is currently in pieces in the garage!

Egypt · 21/06/2007 14:08

thats interesting re bed sizes. we bought dd a super single which is a little wider than a normal single, so we'll have to get a new mattress for her from here when we leave, as she'll need a new one then, (bought her a cheapo for now for accidents and the like). i didn't realise it also may be a little shorter than uk ones too.

who wants to come to soft play then? which day shall we say? tues or thurs? or if you prefer an afternoon can do any.

..........

we only have a part time maid. literally, so comes just once a week do do my entire house and ironing. but i can totally see the benefits of a fulltime one and i kind of WISH i wanted one for all those reasons, but i don't. ooooo, i can't bring myself to get one. people think i am mad

OP posts:
Egypt · 21/06/2007 14:08

OP posts:
quokka · 21/06/2007 15:29

what? don't can't - have you been drinking egypt

I'm good for Tues? We just bought a super single bunk bed as well. I've been using these great bed mats for accidents - but not sure if you can get them here? Like a huge flat nappy, soaps up any accidents. Another tip is put another sheet on the bed. I have cotton matress protector, fitted sheet then bed mat and fitted sheet again. If he has an accident and the sheets get wet then you can take off the top layer and you have dry sheets underneath and don't have the bother of making the bed agin. That seemed like a very long winded explanation eh? But the matress should never get weed on

Egypt · 22/06/2007 01:55

hi, yeah we have a bed protector too, but there's milk and alsorts on it so can never be totally confident!

the apostrophes are fixed now. it wasnt just me thankfully. i am totally same

xx

tues great, am? say 10am?

OP posts:
Singapore · 22/06/2007 03:57

Hi Egypt, have not spoken before but I am in the same position as you, just cannot bring myself to go full time with the maid. We are off for the summer so will go for part time again when we get back. Enjoy your meet up, took mine go Gogobambini on Wed and they had a ball, nice place and very nice coffee. Enjoy

Egypt · 22/06/2007 05:04

hello

I'm in for tuesday.
Are going to go go bambini or delta?

quokka · 22/06/2007 06:14

I thought it was delta as its a bit smaller and easier to watch the tods?

Have interviews with maids tomorrow - I'm still to be convinced about someone living in the house.. BUT as dh says we will be able to have a social life and I can spend some more time with kids. Its not with the one you mentioned slim but they are in the same building so will pop in and see what they say. Did you get a transfer? The one thing I really want from a maid is a good cook. I was going to go to classes to learn how to do eastern food, but now I'm hoping they can teach me
