Yes, Sue, I agree. Whilst I am no fan of the NHS (or any socialised medicine really) I think that the NHS shines in the event of an emergency. It's just the things they consider to be optional. For example, what colour do you supppose my crown will be? There is only one acceptable colour to me, and that is the colour of the neighboring teeth. I bet I'll have to jump up and down, and then fork out a bunch of dosh for a private crown. And, something else has occured to me, she only made an appointment for the root canal, and not the crown. So when I'm finished having the root scraped out (OUCH!) do you suppose I walk around for one month or two with a virtually missing tooth before I get the an appointment for a crown?

HOWEVER.... I've had two kids by section on the NHS (one emergency, one planned) and haven't paid a penny so I figure I haven't done too badly in terms of getting what my taxes have paid for.

suejonez · 24/07/2006 12:46

I had root canal work done last year (first one) and a cermic overlay bonded to the tooth (didn;t need a crown) and it was completly painless until I got the bill.

look its the third one on the left you can just make it out...

Uwila · 24/07/2006 13:01

I'm soo looking forward to this dinner conversation of dodgy kidneys and overpriced dental work.

Are you still coming, CD? And, are you all better bow?

suejonez · 24/07/2006 13:04

and if Nanou remembers to come we will be discussng our dodgy reproductive systems - laugh a minute!

Uwila · 24/07/2006 13:05

Oh, I've learned something new now. Does Nanou have a didgy reproductive system -- on second thought, don't answer that.

suejonez · 24/07/2006 13:10

I'm sure we briefly compared didgy repro systems (sounds like something from IKEA) on one thread and that I'm not imagining it...

Uwila · 24/07/2006 13:33

Oh yes, Ikeas new line of instruments from down under.

Nanou1 · 24/07/2006 13:38

you are not SJ! but you'll just to have to wait til thursday to know more Uwila . bored to tears at "work" today. re teeth... suggest you do a new thread on "polish dentists/been there-done that?!" to see what people come up with. you could always arrange a family holiday around your appointments-not that you would enjoy it if painful but for the price of uk treatments, you get treatment + family holiday + pocket money. i would seriously consider it for implants myself but you are not quite there yet are you ?!

MrsRecycle · 25/07/2006 09:16

Hello ladies - hope you are all well (apart from your teeth and digestive problems that is). I'm finding it unbearable in this heat but only 4 weeks to go. Just to let you know I'll be there on Thursday (as long as they've got air-con - if not I'm bringing my own fan along).

Looking forward to seeing you all then.

CountessDracula · 25/07/2006 09:20

Am hoping to come but may have to leave til last minute as dh has a work thing, if he can get back in time I will shoot down

MrsBigD · 25/07/2006 11:05

phew just catching up today. Had other things on the mind/to deal with. Well actually still dealing but thought I'd better put in appearance before I loose my status as German Leader

Sounds like our dinner conversation is going to be fab to scare of the next table . I think the time in Kingston, the birth experiences didn't go down to well with the party table who wanted the music too loud.

Lemme see then do I have this right for who's potentially coming?

Nanou1 · 26/07/2006 11:24

Uwila · 26/07/2006 12:21

Uh oh... I feel a Thursday night booze up coming on... But I have to be at work in the morning, so I thinkI'll have to restrain myself, within reason of course.

MrsBigD · 26/07/2006 12:51

shall I order a pitcher or 2 of G&T when I get there?

OP posts:
Uwila · 26/07/2006 13:21

But, you'll drink them before anyone else gets there.

suejonez · 26/07/2006 13:36

You can take us all hone Uwila if you're going to be restrained!

MrsBigD · 26/07/2006 13:39

OP posts:
YanksUponThames · 26/07/2006 19:14

Hello.....yes, I think I can come for pizza tomorrow, tho' dh has been busy with work, and if he's late then maybe I'll bring ds for a short while (if I have to) until dh gets home! Fortunately the place is close to where we live. Or, I'll show up a bit late if necessary, but should be there in any case.

As for Polish/eastern european/whatever doctors etc., I can at least state that from my own personal experience with university researchers, that Poles/Russians/Ukrainians/etc. scientists at least, seem to get quite good educations as far as I can see, and definitely seem to know their stuff at least as well as the Yank and Brit grad students & scientists that I've known. If not better, actually -- anybody who qualified for a good technical education in their system, got extra-special-good-training. I'm afraid I dunno from personal experience how well that applies to medicine and dentistry, as such, but I've rather got the impression that there's a lot of people in eastern europe with good technical educations, especially people about our own age, without enough state jobs to apply their talents to, which is why there's a good market right now for things like UK people getting their dentistry done etc.

I don't have any personal testimonials to add to the discussion, but I can vouch that the technical educations of a lot of eastern european professionals has actually been quite good.

YanksUponThames · 26/07/2006 19:28

Hey, vodka & bitter lemon is good for me too...

YanksUponThames · 26/07/2006 19:30

Anyone who can't manage to drive home (assuming they were able to park in Richmond, which is a whole 'nuther problem), or stagger to the bus stop right outside the restaurant door, or to the taxi stand at the rail station a few yards away, is perfectly welcome to crash in our sitting room if necessary....
