Week 4 (or 5!) Jan '25 Low Carb Bootcamp

Morning all.

Spreadsheet, as ever

Although we're coming to the end of this particular Bootcamp, you'll see that @FinallyHere has added enough columns to the spreadsheet so that you can keep going, should you wish.

We'll also keep this thread going too, past the end of the week, for general low carb/Bootcamp chat and support - although I won't be starting a weigh-in thread each Monday after this one.

I know it's only been a short one this time, but looking at the spreadsheet, it looks like there have been some great results, even before today's weigh-in. Flowers

I'm back on it as of today. Anyone else here koko?

Am starting from scratch again on the first two weeks of bootcamp, so I may bore you all with everything I eat so I have some accountability

prettybird · 20/02/2025 10:38

I'm around (at least until a week on Sunday) and still being strict Smile

I may well be popping in after next Sunday for accountability as the wedding is not until 21st March and my dress is still a bit tight neat over my hips Blush I'm going to measure my waist before we go, as a proxy in lieu of having scales to measure myself.

Floralnomad · 20/02/2025 10:45

I’m still going . We went to Disney Paris for a few days earlier this week and I went off plan at the afternoon tea in the lounge at the Disneyland hotel and for a couple of dinners but I was very restrained at breakfast and just had fruit and a hot selection . No idea how they do their mushrooms but they are excellent . I haven’t weighed this week so will do my usual Monday weigh in next week .

@Almahart
I'm still here, reading along. Not so much commenting though. Mine's more like YOYO rather than KOKO 😂Even my daughter is beating me who has just joined Slimming World.

FinallyHere · 20/02/2025 13:43

KOKO here, too [waves]

Travelling today, shall not even think about eating anything I am likely to encounter on the journey. One of my favourite things about this WOE is how quiet the sensation of hunger is now for me.

I used to be tempted by everything and anything set out to tempt in an airport, while thinking that I had no choice because I was travelling. Getting my 'money's worth' from the business lounges. All of it quite processed and designed to keep for ages.

Only one of the reasons I piled on the weight. Much prefer this life where I shall drink all the water and have a lovely meal in due course.

prettybird · 20/02/2025 14:31

My temptation is going to be the Upper Deck lounge at Glasgow Airport (which is complimentary with our booking as we'd booked a few nights accommodation with them) on Sunday morning Blush But thereafter, I won't eat anything until Tuesday morning Halo

I can now do extended fasts comfortably so the only thing I'll really want on the plane is lots of water Grin

Floralnomad · 20/02/2025 15:41

I can’t fast at all as for some reason it really affects my Addisons as that would be useful .

FinallyHere · 20/02/2025 15:45

Upper Deck lounge

Mmmmm, 😎

TheOnlyMrsW · 20/02/2025 16:10

Trying to koko here in the face of life and all it's fun, will hopefully have hit the 12st mark by the time we go away next weekend which will be a loss of 9lb since NYD. We have an early flight so are booked into the escape lounge at the airport (doesn't look nearly as nice as yours @prettybird) but by all accounts the breakfasts are very good, plenty of bacon/eggs/mushrooms etc so I'll head there instead of the pastries and it will be too early to go anywhere near alcohol!

KittenPause · 20/02/2025 16:40

I'm still KOKO

Mainly still Bootcamping as it were with the tiniest of blips here and there

My portion sizes are still smaller than they were ie normal size

It helps when photos of meals are uploaded because it keeps my meals in check as to what should be enough on a plate

When I met friends the other night I noticed my stomach no longer sort of bulging out as much when I sat down and my top hanging better for it and jeans not squashing me

I just feel much more comfortable in my clothes

prettybird · 20/02/2025 16:45

Our flight is not until 1.25 but we can get in to the lounge from 10.15.....we plan to be there on the dot Wink

It's a long time since I've flown business class and even though we're not this time (we looked into possibly upgrading to premium economy on the way out, when it's just the two of us but ShockShockShockShock the holiday id already expensive enough as it is Hmm) I plan to make the business class lounge Grin

KittenPause · 20/02/2025 17:51

Enjoy every moment of it all @prettybird and upload some of the lovely LC meals you might be enjoying please

I'd like to feel glorious on a beach again this summer.

To just get up and walk into the sea for a swim without feeling self conscious

Hi,
I was in this bootcamp under a different MN registration. (I de-registered in a fit of panic about the hostile attention that various trolls and hackers seem to inflict on MN, and then re-registered).
I've been following LCHF and have benefited a lot from it, but a recent NHS wellness check revealed my cholesterol levels to be in the "extremely high" category (8.3 total cholesterol). My "good," i.e. HDL, cholesterol is also high (3, as I recall), and I know that is regarded as being extremely protective against the health risks of high total cholesterol. However, my GP thinks I should also be aiming to reduce total cholesterol (and googling reveals this to be a not-unreasonable consensus in the medical profession).

Bearing in mind that my blood pressure is also alarmingly high, I definitely think that I should be modifying the way I "do" low-carb eating so that I can tackle my cholesterol levels. And I wondered what view and tips the informed women here might have about that?

So far I have done two things: I've allowed in a few more carbs (chiefly pulses and nuts); and I have tried to cut out foods that are high in saturated fats (switching as far as possible to other fats - poly- and monounsaturated). In practice this has meant almost totally cutting out dairy, ditching high-fat cuts of red meat and buying a lot of tinned sardines and salmon.

My biggest problem is coffee. I had become addicted to coffee with double cream. That has to go, so I have been experimenting with all the different nut milks. Other than almond, though, these all seem to come with a fair old whack of carbs. Plus of course they are all relatively disgusting in coffee - some more than others. Any recommendations of the best nut-milk compromise between carb count and flavour would be very welcome.

I'd also be glad of any thoughts about the relative importance of total cholesterol level versus ratio-of-HDL-to-total. As far as I can see, both metrics are important, and I just can't decide how far to compromise my low-carb eating in order to optimise all these various considerations.

BIWI · 22/02/2025 10:35

I think the best person to help you @GriefSubmittedHighways would be @StuntNun.

... but also just to check, how much do you currently weigh? How old are you and how tall are you? Do you have a family history of familial hypercholesterolemia?

(Oh, and welcome back!)

Floralnomad · 22/02/2025 11:07

@GriefSubmittedHighways have you looked at those plant sterol tablets that are supposed to help , I’ve no personal experience but they get excellent reviews ( and then have your cream ! )

Gunnersforthecup · 22/02/2025 11:25

Hi, I am just wondering when the next bootcamp will be running?

GriefSubmittedHighways · 22/02/2025 12:09

Thanks for the responses. Re your questions, @BIWI , I'm currently 138 pounds and about 5 foot 5 or 6. So, not strictly overweight. But I feel so much stronger and more balanced on low carb. Several excess pounds have just melted off, so readily that I feel they weren't 'meant' to be there, and it was only some sort of carb intolerance that foisted them on me. So I'm quite keen on staying on a long-term maintenance low-carb regime.

I need to find a volume of carbs that will keep my body on track but without making it hard for me to sustain low-carbing in conjunction with watching cholesterol.
Thanks for the mention of plant sterol tablets @Floralnomad . Off to google these now. Well, off for a run first! Then a google.

BIWI · 22/02/2025 12:17

I'm not planning on doing any more, @Gunnersforthecup. I was very angered by the recent statement from MNHQ that those of use who use adblockers are piggy-backing on other users (which followed a much earlier post about us effectively being freeloaders.)

Given the amount of content I have provided for them over the years, this made me really angry. (I've been running Bootcamps since 2012).

TBH it wasn't so much the wording, as the tone of recent comments from MNHQ, which suggests that they really don't have much respect for their users. We have become a bit of an annoyance for them, I feel. I almost deregged at that point.

I didn't see that message @BIWI

I use the MN app on my iPhone so I don't really get affected by adverts

Not so I've noticed

Maybe a tiny one I don't even notice tbh
