Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:00

Evening all! I'm posting the week 2 chat thread this evening, as I know how keen everyone will be to post tomorrow. As I'm retired now, I no longer have to set an alarm to wake up, so I don't want to keep everyone waiting tomorrow morning to post.

I love this week. It's when we see how much people have lost, and it can be a significant amount. It can be a real leap of faith for anyone who hasn't low carbed before, and all those who really don't believe you can eat that much fat and still lose weight!

I'm really hoping that you've all had a good first week, and that your commitment 'to the cause' has been rewarded with a good result - be that on the scales, with your tape measure, or the currently-too-tight clothes that you've been trying on.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope very much that you've had a good first week, and that you're feeling supermotivated for the rest of Bootcamp.

However - if you haven't lost, or you have even gained, please don't be downhearted. We're all different, and there may be lots of reasons why this is the case for you. It's also really important to note that it's not a competition. We all lose at different rates - plus, anyone who is bigger will lose more/faster than someone who is smaller.

Hopefully there are other benefits to this WOE that will keep you on track - at the very least, I hope that you have been enjoying the food, and that you don't feel deprived, like you would be on a low calorie/fat diet.

Just under 3lbs off for me but started my period yesterday; I did see slightly less on Sat. Over half a stone off since my horrific New Year's Day weigh-in! I'm a daily weigher which works for me; as with many PP's I know I'm really off the wagon when I only weigh every once in a while!

Thanks to all for thread. Loads of great food ideas, lots of successes!

Find your full fat yogurt soul mate here http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/lowcarbb_bootcamp/4718643-find-your-full-fat-yogurt-soul-mate-here

Just a reminder we have this (hopefully) useful yogurt thread ongoing, for those like me who are promiscuous on the supermarket front Grin

There's no wonder I've always been baffled in Lidl- both the Greek and Greek Style look a bit similar, are 10g fat and near identical carbs!

poorbuthappy · 16/01/2023 14:26

4 lb off. Very happy with that start!!

MaryDoll84 · 16/01/2023 14:46

Well done to all the losers and everyone for just sticking to the plan. Some impressive losses. I'm not weighing so nothing to report but I'm pleased that my appetite has started to dampen, although I did start on 4th Jan so had a head start. Bit of a NSV..I came on my period this morning and I've just realised that I haven't been craving sugar all week. Normally I eat nothing but crap for about 10 days prior. If this WoE literally did nothing but stop the pre-period sugar binges, it'd be worth it.

TangledWebOfDeception · 16/01/2023 15:15

Hello @BIWI and all!

Thanks as always to those who do the work to keep this running, and to the lovely people who make this group so positive! Flowers

Hope you all had good news on the scales. If not, don't be discouraged - KOKO and it WILL work.

I'm a week late to the thread but have been doing my thing since a few days before the start, just haven't had the headspace to introduce myself/comment/etc.

Weight last Monday: 75 kg (165.3 lbs)

Weight today: 73.2 (161.3)

I've not drunk all the water, so need to get sorted with that!

Now to read the thread. Smile

Skiphopbump · 16/01/2023 15:32

To the poster who mentioned being cold - I have never been so cold in my life! I started in October so was doing during the really cold snap, I had to resort to wearing two layers on my legs even at night. Hopefully it means I won’t be a sweaty mess in the summer…

TangledWebOfDeception · 16/01/2023 15:43

(Apologies @BIWI for breaking thread etiquette by posting before catching up on the thread - I suffer a bit with social/posting anxiety; sounds ridiculous but the more invested I am the harder it is to post, so I had to just get the first post out of the way so I could start to engage with you all!)

Gingerwarthog · 16/01/2023 15:44

Ok ladies - about to start HRT patches so will let you know if this affects anything weight wise!!
Hopefully even if it does low carbs will balance things out. Have been feeling like an old woman (no interest in travel, lack of energy, tired, achey) so let's see if this helps!

MotherBuckets · 16/01/2023 15:44

Great to see everyone doing so well! My official weigh day is Tuesday this time but looking good already...

Had a blood test recently to rule out causes of a sudden bald patch. Turns out I'm not really deficient in anything, especially cholesterol because that came back as NINE Shock I know if I do this properly it should improve my cholesterol so holding my nerve for now!

Gingerwarthog · 16/01/2023 15:45

Tbh
Would take a bit of weight gain over feeling like this!!!
Still cold

I started patches last October and was convinced they were making me put weight out. However I think it was more to do with the food I shovelled in my face for the last 3 months. It appears the last week would prove it. 😬

HungryHazelEyes · 16/01/2023 15:55

I had a small loss this week, 1.4lbs. I did start 4th Jan though, properly. I am almost back to my pre- Christmas weight. I gained 4.6lbs, 1.2lbs left to lose.
I'm getting closer to my goal weight, so I know my loss each week will be small. I have just over 10lbs to lose. I've reached it before and know it really does slow down at this point.
NSV: I have lost 1/2 inch from my waist since 2nd Jan! I also know that when the scales aren't moving, that can be a good sign for your waist 😇
I also weigh daily, and I did get lower this week, but I've decided to just stick with my Monday weight this bootcamp instead of putting the lowest weight of the week on the spreadsheet.

StuntNun · 16/01/2023 15:59

@Gingerwarthog HRT patches shouldn't do anything bad for your weight so don't worry. They may make your skin feel much softer and smoother which is a lovely side effect.

I would keep your macros where they are @Smorgs but if you're worried that you're not feeling great, maybe try and cut the carbs slightly and increase the calories a little. It does depend on your height and how much you have to lose. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat about tweaking things as I don't want to derail the thread with macro chat as most people don't need to worry about them.

BIWI · 16/01/2023 16:34

Merchdda · 16/01/2023 13:59

Thanks@BIWI

Im aiming to lose 10-12lbs in total, but would be happy with 7lbs! So not huge numbers.
From memory (can't work out how to search my posts to see for sure) my food has been:

Yesterday:
Bfast - egg with Boursin
Lunch - Sunday roast - roast chicken and skin, cauliflower cheese, cabbage in cheesy sauce, pigs in blankets, broccoli.
Dinner - cheese platter with gherkins

About 5 coffee and creams

Water - 2.5 litres

Saturday:
Breakfast: yogurt
Lunch: guacamole and salsa
Dinner: chilli made with shallots, full fat mince, tinned tomatoes, mushrooms. With homemade guacamole on the side

About 3 coffee and creams

Water - 3 litres

Friday
Bfast: 2 boiled eggs with soft cheese
Lunch: homemade guacamole with salsa
Dinner: sausage, streaky bacon, tinned tomato, fried eggs
Snack - cheese platter

Water 2.5 litres
Coffee - 4 cups

I might have mixed up what I had on what day but this is fairly accurate- peri memory is horrendous.

I'll start keeping a list for each day in case I need to post again.

There's not really a lot of veg going on in your menus, is there?

It could also be that there's too much dairy. Could you try cutting that down/out?

You don't have much to lose, so it is going to be slower going from now, but tweaking could make all the difference.

@TangledWebOfDeception don't worry! I understand Flowers

Now you've posted, there will be no stopping you, I assume? Wink

I use a heated throw to combat the cold toes. works a treat, that and a hot bath before bed

4 lb off. Very happy with that start!!

well done on your loss, thats nearly 2 bags of sugar lost in just a week x

BonnieBairn · 16/01/2023 16:47

Well done to everyone this week. I've had a 3lb loss, was 4lb during week but my period is due so think that accounts for a slight gain back. 3lbs is still good though.

Does anyone have any nice fish recipes they can share? I tried to search but can't see any.

Hope everyone has a good week 2, onwards and downwards BC'rs!

Jenasaurus · 16/01/2023 17:00

@BonnieBairn

This is one I have tried and it is only 3.5g carbs - not my own recipe, but I use a Keto website that has some great recipes - this is the instructions and ingredients for fish pie

Topping
1 cauliflower
3 tablespoons sour cream
1 cup Cheddar cheese, grated
2 tablespoons butter unsalted
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon chives, fresh chopped
Filling
7 oz white fish
4 oz salmon
10 prawns
Sauce
½ cup cream cheese
½ cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon chives, chopped
INSTRUCTIONS
MAKE THE CAULIFLOWER TOPPING
Cut the cauliflower into florets and place in a saucepan.
Cover with water and bring to the boil.
Cover with a lid and simmer for 20 minutes until soft.
Drain and add the butter. Mash the cauliflower until the butter has melted.
Add the grated cheese & sour cream. Season with salt & pepper.
Blend the mashed cauliflower until smooth (you could do this with a form if you don’t want the topping too smooth)
Add the chives into the mixture.
COOK THE FISH
Poach or steam the fish & prawns for 8 minutes, until cooked and easy to flake.
Set aside
MAKE THE SAUCE
Place the cream cheese, cream, lemon and mustard in a saucepan and gently heat until smooth.
Stir in the chopped herbs.
ASSEMBLE
Pre-heat the oven to 200C/400F degrees.
Flake the white fish and salmon into large chunks.
Add the fish and prawns into the cheese sauce and stir.
Spoon the fish sauce into a baking dish.
Pipe or spoon the cauliflower mash over the top of the fish mixture.
Bake for 20 minutes until the top is golden.

@TangledWebOfDeception Welcome to the thread. Don't feel nervous-we're all in the same boat, buoying each other up.

TangledWebOfDeception · 16/01/2023 17:09

Thank you @MaryDoll84! I'm an oldtimer (off and on for years) so I know it's a lovely space and feel very comfortable here. It's just my own silliness - I'm the same way with the thought of driving, really have to psych myself up to it, even though I love to drive! Confused

@BIWI Flowers I'm definitely going to do my best to engage as much as possible. Given I've a tendency toward quite long and convoluted comments, you might end up regretting having encouraged me... Grin

Merchdda · 16/01/2023 17:13

Thanks @BIWI . Most meals apart from bfast, 1/2 my plate is full of veggies but I will try to add it to breakfast too.

I'll eliminate cheese as will struggle to survive work without my coffee and double creams (but will also reduce the cream content too in case that helps).

You are right I don't have a lot to lose, and with me being short and in peri menopause I need to prepare for it being a slow rate.

Will keep a tight record of food for this week so can try and pinpoint any other incremental improvements

Gingerwarthog · 16/01/2023 17:16

Thanks @poorbuthappy and @StuntNun !
Good to hear!

Merchdda · 16/01/2023 17:19

Any ideas what I could make using a bowl of home made chicken stock please?

MuthaHubbard · 16/01/2023 17:52

Well done all on the losses, nsvs, maintenance and general just KOKO's

Delighted with a 4.4lbs loss 😁

I didn't get all my water in over the weekend so back to making an effort today.
B - fried egg & bacon
L - chilli & garlic prawns with feta, romaine and cucumber
D - shoogle sprouts & cauli with left over roast chicken

Do need to up the allowed veg I think so the celeriac chips/mash is next on list to try
