Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:00

Evening all! I'm posting the week 2 chat thread this evening, as I know how keen everyone will be to post tomorrow. As I'm retired now, I no longer have to set an alarm to wake up, so I don't want to keep everyone waiting tomorrow morning to post.

I love this week. It's when we see how much people have lost, and it can be a significant amount. It can be a real leap of faith for anyone who hasn't low carbed before, and all those who really don't believe you can eat that much fat and still lose weight!

I'm really hoping that you've all had a good first week, and that your commitment 'to the cause' has been rewarded with a good result - be that on the scales, with your tape measure, or the currently-too-tight clothes that you've been trying on.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope very much that you've had a good first week, and that you're feeling supermotivated for the rest of Bootcamp.

However - if you haven't lost, or you have even gained, please don't be downhearted. We're all different, and there may be lots of reasons why this is the case for you. It's also really important to note that it's not a competition. We all lose at different rates - plus, anyone who is bigger will lose more/faster than someone who is smaller.

Hopefully there are other benefits to this WOE that will keep you on track - at the very least, I hope that you have been enjoying the food, and that you don't feel deprived, like you would be on a low calorie/fat diet.

Morning everyone - absolutely brilliant to read about how week 1 has gone for you all! I'm on a 3lb loss, end goal target is now 21lbs away - aim for this week is to get that under 20 lbs.

Breakfast this morning - Scrambled egg with seasalt, a touch of double cream and some butter.
Lunch - Chicken legs, hellmans mayo with some added chillisauce (i prefer perinnaise but notices its quite carby) and a mixed leaf saald
Dinner - homemade roast gammon with broccoli and cauli cheese (need to look back on thread 1 for the sauce recipe as I usually do a roux type)

just snacked on some mini pepperami and cheddar cubes while everyone else had bacon Sandwiches - feeling proud, but also really noticing the hunger reducing now

prettybird · 16/01/2023 11:13

@CarbyLite - why not try making your own coleslaw? There's a recipe either on the recipe thread or on one of the tabs of the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness Smile

Hellman's mayonnaise is low in carbs but I just use the Lidl mayonnaise which is also very low. I make a lot: that way I know I have a supply of something crunchy in the fridge.

In fact, you've put me in mind to make some - but I don't think I have any white cabbage unusually for me at the moment HmmSad

Smorgs · 16/01/2023 11:16

Morning, 6lbs off for me which I am very happy about, even if I suspect it's probably mostly water. Have stuck religiously to the plan (ok well apart from one evening when I caved in and had 25g macademia nuts) and despite not really meal planning this week I have managed to stick to it and make the family 'acceptable' meals too.
@DontGetEvenGetEverything that's interesting about joint pain, I've had a really sore knee since Christmas without knowingly doing anything to strain it but this week the pain has mostly disappeared.
Daily menus are mainly - two boiled eggs for breakfast, big salad with avocado and either roast chicken thighs or mackerel for lunch, dinners have been roast chicken and green veg, low carb cottage pie with celeriac topping (did potato for the rest of the family), turkey osso buco, burgers (no bun for me) and pork chops with veg, followed by Greek yoghurt or Perle de Lait. Daily calories are somewhere around 1,300-1,400 and my macros are generally 10-16% carb, 65-70% fat and 18-25% protein (although one day I got to 34% protein somehow?!)
I confess though I have been feeling a bit under the weather and ratty with the children though so maybe I need to try to adjust those macros to keep on track? Thanks for the explainer @StuntNun

prettybird · 16/01/2023 11:16

@Gingerwarthog - on the Week 1 thread you asked if people feel the cold more on this WOE. I certainly do Shock

I don't know if there is any scientific reason for it but I like to think of it as because I'm losing layers of insulating fat BlushGrin

mimosa1 · 16/01/2023 11:18

Reporting in w/ a 2kg loss for me. Annoyingly I think that keeps me a hair's breadth into the 180s but something to aim for next week

@StuntNun thanks for the detailed explanation on what eating more fat is good for us, and of course to @BIWI for running the spreadsheet and @FinallyHere for spreadsheet help.

Wishing all boot campers a positive week ahead a

Stokey · 16/01/2023 11:30

@prettybird @BIWI I couldn't get your link to the recipe threads to work. I think I may have seen it in the main chat though.

TheMagicSword · 16/01/2023 11:36

Morning all. 6lb off for me, which I’m very happy with for a week one whoosh!

Breakfast was broccoli with cheese sauce (can recommend!). Lunch I haven’t yet thought through, dinner will be sausages plus a pile of whatever veg is left before the big shop arrives.

Gym this morning, sheepishly trailing round after a man who clearly had the same routine as me, sheepish as he was 30 years older but lifting five times more! I like my gym actually - a lot of older people, people recovering from injuries, strokes, I believe they have a big programme of GPs being able to prescribe gym membership. The odd poser, but it feels like a place where people go to get increase their quality of life, not to post on Instagram!

Linnet · 16/01/2023 11:36

Hi everyone I’ve lost 2lbs which I’m pleased with as I only started on Wednesday! I’m going to keep going this week and see how I get in and I really need to up my water intake as I know I’m not drinking enough.

I was very good at work last week and ignored all the biscuits and sweets that we still have left over from Christmas. But found that I was getting a bit hungry just before going home so I’ve decided to add more to my lunches, I only get half an hour though so I can’t take too much in else I’d have to eat really fast 😆
ive also been writing down some of the recipes people have been posting, the Thai green cauliflower soup sounds amazing so can’t wait to try that and the bacon and chicken with the Cajun creamy sauce.

well done everyone and koko.

Brassbumblebee · 16/01/2023 11:38

Well i went shopping so Im all stocked up and ready for the week ahead.

Got lots of sprouts to shoggle but unfortunately they didnt have celeriac so I wont be having "dirty fries" this week. 😒
I DID get some pots of lidls 10% yogurt which I'll post a picture of on the yogurt thread if it hasnt been done yet. Happy with that as there wasnt any in when I went yesterday.

Today's menu
B: 10% yogurt
L: Sprouts with butter (needs to be quick and I dont want to just miss lunch out)
D: left over cauliflower cheese and cabbage from yesterday with smoked haddock.

BIWI · 16/01/2023 11:46

@Smorgs just a reminder that we don't count calories (or our macros!) on Bootcamp.

@prettybird I'm afraid your link doesn't work!

See if this one works - a link to all the recipe threads

There are some amazing losses on here.

Well done everyone.

To the pp who said about being colder. Yes me too! I mean I know it is colder but I'm not usually one to feel the cold.
I've had my oodie on at home all of the time.

prettybird · 16/01/2023 12:03

@BIWI - as I mentioned, I think it's the flakiness of MN across different platforms. It still works for me Confused - but then I both got the "share" link from the iOS app and am clicking through to it from this thread on the app Confused

Maybe we need to do two separate links: one done from the app and another done from a browser on a laptop Shock (don't know if there's an equivalent MN app for an android but if there is, from that too Hmm).

prettybird · 16/01/2023 12:07

I'm happy to report a 2lb loss this week Smile - down to 11st 10.5lb (c8lb down from the peak of the Christmas excesses Xmas Blush)

Only 2lb to go to get back to where I'd got to on Christmas Eve - but only 3/4lb to go to get to my first intermediate target, which is to be back into 3 figures Grin

FinallyHere · 16/01/2023 12:12

Gratters to everyone with great results to share and KOKO (keep on keeping on) to everyone regardless.

I realise I got distracted by posting my own stuff from what I wanted to share , which is to earnestly encourage everyone to use the scales as only one way to measure the success of this way of working.

Other equally useful ways to keep track (and keep on track) are to use a tape measure to track circumference / fit of clothes and, for me the ultimate test, how I feel after I have eaten something. Immediately afterward and for the next day, 24hrs. Do I feel well, got energy and appetite to get on with my life? Am I feeling good and in reasonable control of my life?

Scales can be capricious, to me at least. How I feel is my ultimately reliable and consistent yardstick.

Stokey · 16/01/2023 12:18

Thanks @BIWI that one works.

FairlyOddmother · 16/01/2023 13:19

Hello all, I can't believe it but I've lost 6lb! Only 1lb to go to get under 13st!! Absolutely delighted and FINALLY the hunger pangs are subsiding.

Thanks @BIWI and everyone for the advice, motivation, inspiration (and the threat of the Big Stick of course)

UnfinishedBusiness · 16/01/2023 13:27

I’m really sorry, I can’t remember who suggested it, but I would like to say a really big thank you to whoever it was that suggested some lemon zest and juice stirred through Greek yogurt. It has just saved me and my pmt diving into a bag of Percy pigs I have here waiting to give to my nephew!

Nugg · 16/01/2023 13:34

So pleased for you all with your losses, however big or relatively small, I think even STS is an achievement as its better than a gain and the scales always catchup. As many have mentioned, the no-scale wins are just as important.
My jeans are falling down today, not work them for over a week, so I am hoping for a couple of lbs off tomorrow!

B: Bacon, poached eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes
L: Fried gammon, fried egg, coleslaw, salad, baseless lemon cheesecake (invented by my son lol)
D: Gammon, fried egg, cheesy cauli steak, cabbage, broccoli

Still feeling motivated and enjoying it, going on holiday in 3 weeks when I will lapse but its a good interim target/motivator!

Baystard · 16/01/2023 13:35

Thanks for new thread @BIWI

I'm not weighing but interesting NSV this morning. I felt a row of funny hard nobbly bits under the skin near the middle of my chest today and it took me a while to realise they were my ribs GrinShock

Dinner tonight is a fridge-bottom traybake. Cabbage, pepper, tomato, and a bit of chorizo, sloshed with olive oil, lo salt and topped with some leftover mozzarella and a bit (quite alot actually) of tired grated cheddar. I making enough for there to be leftovers which I'll have with an omelette for lunch tomorrow.

Well done to all the losers and KOKOers, such good examples of success and resilience.

Baystard · 16/01/2023 13:45

@Jenasaurus I make burgers a lot, lamb and beef. For lamb I use 1 x 500g packet of mince and mix in 2 cloves of garlic, 1 tsp salt, about 1 - 2 tbsp tandoori spice mix (I think - i just tip in loads) and about 1 - 2 tbsp chilli (ditto just tipped in). Mix thoroughly then knead well with your hands so that it sticks together, shape into balls and fry. You can also blitz it all up in the food processor (in which case i blitz up half an onion first and then add everything else). Lovely with salad and sour cream.

ElinorDashwood68 · 16/01/2023 13:49

7lb loss, very happy with that!

I'm trying to catch up on the thread, just a day or so behind now. Very inspired with ideas, celeriac is definitely on this week's shopping list. I've never tried before

Good luck everyone with your weigh ins

Merchdda · 16/01/2023 13:59

Thanks@BIWI

Im aiming to lose 10-12lbs in total, but would be happy with 7lbs! So not huge numbers.
From memory (can't work out how to search my posts to see for sure) my food has been:

Yesterday:
Bfast - egg with Boursin
Lunch - Sunday roast - roast chicken and skin, cauliflower cheese, cabbage in cheesy sauce, pigs in blankets, broccoli.
Dinner - cheese platter with gherkins

About 5 coffee and creams

Water - 2.5 litres

Saturday:
Breakfast: yogurt
Lunch: guacamole and salsa
Dinner: chilli made with shallots, full fat mince, tinned tomatoes, mushrooms. With homemade guacamole on the side

About 3 coffee and creams

Water - 3 litres

Friday
Bfast: 2 boiled eggs with soft cheese
Lunch: homemade guacamole with salsa
Dinner: sausage, streaky bacon, tinned tomato, fried eggs
Snack - cheese platter

Water 2.5 litres
Coffee - 4 cups

I might have mixed up what I had on what day but this is fairly accurate- peri memory is horrendous.

I'll start keeping a list for each day in case I need to post again.

I've found the trick with celeriac is to peel it / slice the outside off well, otherwise it tastes a bit aniseedy (which I don't love) if you top and tail it, and then I use a knife to chop the outside skin off. It's a bit like a swede when you get into it, in that you can see the difference between outside skin and inside (that probably makes no sense until you get into it Grin)and I slice the outside bits off

I make mash with mine by dicing it into chunks, boiling with garlic cloves and then blending it with butter, creme fraiche / sour cream and pepper. I've also roasted them which I like (better eaten on the day than heated up I've found) but this way gives me awful wind (TMI) Blush

AllTheBlackCoffee · 16/01/2023 14:04

@LittleMy77 totally with you on the, errrm, side effects of celeriac Blush We’ve had it two days on the bounce here and it’s practically hurricane conditions between me and DH!!
