Week 2 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp Thread

BIWI · 23/01/2022 22:49

As I'm doing more and more often, I'm starting the next week's thread on a Sunday evening.

This is because, since I've retired, I am no longer controlled by the tyranny of my alarm clock, and so will often sleep too late on a Monday morning for all the keen Bootcampers!

I love the first post of week 2, because for all those who are new and/or are sceptics about low carbing, this is the point at which they may realise just how effective a low carb WOE can be.

Anyway, here is the spreadsheet, and I really look forward to seeing everyone's progress

Flowers for us all

Just deluding to say thanks to you ( esp BIWI of course ) all for the encouraging posts and the recipes / meal ideas.

I don’t weight myself regularly so have no scale victories to report. But I am managing to stick to the rules with only a couple of tiny cheats and drinking lots of chilled fizzy water ( which I enjoy ).

I have no trouble skipping breakfast most days but if I’m hungry I will eat it.

I tend to cook the same meals over and over again so I’m enjoying trying a few different things. The cauliflower mash with Boursin cheese was DELICIOUS and I’ve been making Vietnamese pho ( soup ) with bare naked noodles and a huge plate of salad leaves and bean sprouts.

I know that boot camp is no noodles but I assumed that meant the high carb rice of wheat noddles and not the konjak ones which are 1.1 carbs ( I eat the whole packet so it’s 2.2 carbs ) .

I don’t eat any of the low carb breads as I’m gluten intolerant and I never take caffeinated drinks.

I0NA · 24/01/2022 12:06

delurking

Hope I’m not deluding 😁

BIWI · 24/01/2022 12:07

Yes, @I0NA, those noodles are perfect for Bootcamp!

(Although I did have to think what on earth you were talking about when you said you were deluding Grin)

Lovely to see some amazing losses, reassuring to see the steady drops, and hopefully some continued motivation for those who had difficult eating choices last week. I see this woe as a big experiment - what works, what doesn't (in terms of weight change) but also what makes me feel full, what leaves me unsatisfied, what affects my thinking about food and eating...

I tried the Twinings raspberry and lemon tea - it als has a touch of rose water. Made it as a cold drink and it's lovely. There's something about the smell that reminds me of a childhood sweetie, some kind of sherbert, I think.

Got a neighbour doming for dinner so I've made beef rendang. Not really for strict bootcamp as it has toasted coconut, but I've been eating this way for a while. If I remember I'll post the recipe next week when there's an option of bootcamp lite. I'll have mine with oven roast cauliflower rice and some garlicky green beans.

4 lbs down despite one evening falling off the wagon and raiding some chocolate.
I tried my hardest to ignore the voice inside me screaming for glucose. It screamed and screamed and screamed so I gave in. This has put me back but is a lesson learned. I've been cutting down on sugar for ages and thought I'd beaten the urge to have some, so this was a wake up call to be strong in future.
I'm still pleased at 4 lbs and want to thank you all for the motivating posts on here and especially BIWI for what must take a lot of her time and energy.

Kirstyr455 · 24/01/2022 12:48

6lbs off for me. I had a sneaky weigh yesterday thats said 4lbs so to wake up with another 2 off is so motivating.

Today's food is

B - egg wrap filled with spinach and mushroom that have been fried in butter, some asparagus and 1 slice of bacon
L - some left over steak slices with a big salad
D - salmon, brocoli and cauliflower with the low carb cheese sauce using cream (haven't tried this before so fingers crossed)

MercedesBenz · 24/01/2022 12:48

A 2lb loss
And koko for this week
Trying with the water and upping the veg

pinknsparkly · 24/01/2022 13:00

I've never felt the energising effect of low carb eating before, but I've just realised that today I am not nearly as exhausted as I usually would be after being up most of the night with my daughter. After expecting to have to drag myself through the day fuelled by endless coffee, I've only had two cups so far and actually feel fine (or rather, only a little bit lower in energy than normal). As someone who is basically permanently exhausted, this is quite a major thing for me! Long may it continue!!

Breakfast = coffee with cream (plus a chunk of cheese at 4am!)
Lunch = massive chicken, cheese and avocado salad
Dinner = cottage pie mix [i.e. the meat & sauce part, no potato topping] from the freezer plus some sort of buttery vegetables from the freezer. Cabbage maybe?

I know the cottage pie mix isn't ideal as it has some peas and carrots in, but my Tesco delivery isn't due until 8pm and I'm also trying to clear the freezer. My husband is enjoying the clear out stage - for lunch he had an entire packet of tortellini to himself that usually we'd split between us and have with veg! He may not be such a fan when he realises I'm not replacing them though Grin But I did notice that a tub of icecream has appeared in the freezer since yesterday so he's not completely deprived!

Afternoon all , well done to everyone!!
Ive completely stuck to the rules but managed to gain 2lbs !! and I have lots to loose.
I am going to measure myself today so hoping it will change next week.
All I can do is plod on and not give up and trust the process.

Baystard · 24/01/2022 13:08

@Kirstyr455 I tried the cream and cheese sauce for the first time last week and I honestly can't understand why anyone would make it with flour! It also reheated better, without going stodgy.

RagzRebooted · 24/01/2022 13:25

@namechange5575 I'm another YWA'er. I've tried and dropped out several years in a row, but this time I'm still going and it's day 23!

@venusandmars yes please to the beef rendang recipe and please let us know how it is.

RagzRebooted · 24/01/2022 13:32

@Kirstyr455 I made the cheese sauce yesterday (but with dijon mustard, not lemon juice) and I was practically having an orgasm while eating the scrapings from the pan. Had to ration myself portion wise though as it is obviously a LOT of calories (550 for 1/4 of it) and while I know we don't care about those, I could quite easily overeat enough of it to do some damage!
So good...

For lunch I had a portion of my broccoli in cheese sauce from last night with chicken, coleslaw, salad and a few tablespoons of roasted Mediterranean veg from yesterday. Basically a load of leftovers, mixed up. Was gorgeous.

@BetterthanIthink if you like, why don't you list out the meals you've been eating for the last few days, and let's see if there's anything we can spot that might help you.

@StuntNun that looks amazing ! I have re ordered the low carb ready made bread and rolls and am going to freeze it so I don't eat too much too soon but now I'm
Tempted to buy the mix instead after seeing yours :)

Bunnyfuller · 24/01/2022 13:41

Hello all, feeling my way (I would be grateful for any pointers to what this looks like, did Low carb years ago and it went v well).

I’m kind of doing slimming world currently, but very much in a low carb way in the last week, because I just don’t seem to lose with pasta and any real amount of bread in my diet at all!

So a tentative join if anyone can point me in the direction of what I need to revisit and check myself on. I’m 54 so losing weight now is soooooo difficult!

AllTheBlackCoffee · 24/01/2022 13:43

I completely agree with the cheese sauce. I don't make it any other way now, even when I'm not LCing. I usually chuck in a large chunk of Boursin too - makes it nice and garlicky.

Well done to all the losers and KOKO to those who've not seen the figures they wanted on the scales. Just think about what other diet you can eat cheese, cream, butter on and trust that it will work for you.

Today's plan:
B: coffee (IF)
L: omelette with leeks, lardons and spinach ( no mushrooms, we seem to have eaten a large punnet since the shopping arrived yesterday!)
D: beef stroganoff, cauli rice

BIWI · 24/01/2022 13:47

@Bunnyfuller welcome! Add yourself to the spreadsheet, and while you're there, check out the Bootcamp rules, which are on one of the tabs. There's also loads of articles and blogs and websites linked to on the resources section that should help you.

@NigellaAwesome - been there, done that with salopettes Blush There was one bad year where I needed to borrow a "Large" pair that dh had been given by a friend Shock and in order to do my ski jacket up, I had to hoik it up to waist level Blush (even when I was pregnant I still had defined waist if you look at me straight on Wink). Not very flattering Blush

BetterthanIthink · 24/01/2022 14:06

Thank you @BIWI I can do later when I’m home .
I’ve previously done Keto / low carb before and lost 3 stones so I know what I’m doing so to speak.
I have hypothyroidism so that impacts on my weight greatly I feel .

prettybird · 24/01/2022 14:14

Oops - pressed "post" too soon.

I'm pleased to report a 1.75lb loss - but as I started a week early, it's actually 8lb since I started. (probably more as I started on the Sunday but didn't weigh until the Monday).

Burns Supper tomorrow. Haggis isn't properly low carb but I'll make everything else compatible. Going to make a low carb variation of cranachan with flaked almonds rather than oats and maybe inulin to sweeten the cream (and whisky of course Wink). Scallops, Stornaway black pudding and crispy streaky bacon for starter.

Gardeniafleur · 24/01/2022 14:23

4lb loss!

Cottage cheese for breakfast, left over chicken curry for lunch and planning baked salmon with flgv for dinner.

Am going to roast two chickens tonight, take meat off and make stock tomorrow, then have lots of cooked chicken for noodles (low carb for me), Caesar salad etc, then might use some pre roll pastry to make an easy pie for family while I have cauli/celeriac mash etc.

Also going to make hamburger pie this week, also have some tofu and sardines in tomato sauce ready.

Wilkolampshade · 24/01/2022 14:33

A very quiet wave from me 👋 and well done all.
I'm two weeks in and 8 lbs down which feels great but soooo much further to go. I'm admiring all your energy but just staying quiet myself atm as it feels like a long old haul....
I know this works for me like nothing ever has having done it before so the food part is relatively easy for me. My goal for this then is sort of non food based : I'm aiming to clear out and tidy the bedroom, get some nice fresh sheets on etc, so I have somewhere nice to go in the evening away from the telly and accompanying temptation of wine and crisps. I'm sure having a tidy room ought to be normal but we 've often lived in building sites and this current house is no exception.
Also sorting clothes and maybe buying some better quality jumpers etc from the charity shop as I do get bloody cold...

StuntNun · 24/01/2022 14:34

@ShagMeRiggins

Was that with a bread maker, Stunt?

And 10% vs 45% - sorry, grams per 100g or percentage of recommended daily carb intake (that doesn’t sound right but I don’t know), or is it the same thing?

Looks good. Agree—use sparingly!

Oh, and WATER WATER EATER y’all!!!

Even if it’s just a glut or two. You don’t have to down a whole glass.

Yes the low carb bread was made in a breadmaker and it's 10g carbs per 100g. I should have weighed the slices to see how many carbs per slice but I know it will be too much for me. My DH has a much greater carb tolerance than me so he'll probably eat the rest of the loaf.
MrsTerryPratchett · 24/01/2022 14:37

Just finished week three. Loss of 0.6lb this week, which is fine in week 3! 10.2 overall.

I'm sticking with BC not lite until the end of January because I'm Dry Januarying anyway and nuts aren't as nice as wine.
