Week 2 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp Thread

BIWI · 23/01/2022 22:49

As I'm doing more and more often, I'm starting the next week's thread on a Sunday evening.

This is because, since I've retired, I am no longer controlled by the tyranny of my alarm clock, and so will often sleep too late on a Monday morning for all the keen Bootcampers!

I love the first post of week 2, because for all those who are new and/or are sceptics about low carbing, this is the point at which they may realise just how effective a low carb WOE can be.

Anyway, here is the spreadsheet, and I really look forward to seeing everyone's progress

Flowers for us all

Still catching up but finally on page 8!
Well done to all the losses!
@Luckydog7 thank you for that recipe, I’ve been fancying something with a bit of crunch so this might hit the spot!
@BIWI thank you for the aubergine recipe, I am one of the posters on a budget so I will definitely be adding these ingredients to my next shopping list!
@MotherBuckets thank you for the Cheesies offer, someone mentioned on the last thread and I’ve been wanting to try but not passed a store selling them.

Sorry to hear there are a few struggling with mental health decline, think the short days and general gloom of January don’t help and hope you all feel better soon Flowers

BIWI · 29/01/2022 08:12

@Luckydog7

I've been sleeping really badly and just remembered i had a similar issue last time. its kind of like anxiety, feel very jittery and can't calm my mind enough to sleep, very strange as ive been sleeping like the dead up until a few days ago. can anyone advise what to do, will it improve? I know low carb can effect you more if you have anxiety for instance. I don't as far as i know.
As you're in week 3, I seem to remember, this doesn't sound like carb flu.

But ...

Are you sure you're getting enough sodium/potassium/magnesium? Try taking an electrolyte supplement and see if that helps.

Also, it could be that your carbs are too low. Try having a slice of wholemeal toast with one of your meals today, and see if that makes a difference.

Hello

Could anybody recommend a white vinegar which has low sugar content?

I have read through a lot of stuff on here but not all, and haven't seen anything about this.

I know I could use lemons but they are too sour for me.

Many thanks

BIWI · 29/01/2022 08:18

Any vinegar apart from balsamic @dogmandu.

So white wine vinegar would be perfect.

@Luckydog7

I take 2 Holland and Barrett 250mg Magnesium tablets just before bed and rarely don't sleep. Magnesium is also widely used as a calming supplement for horses.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 29/01/2022 08:47

@Luckydog7 try pukka night time tea - in addition the magnesium, it really calms your mind I find.

dogmandu · 29/01/2022 08:54

Thank you BIWI.

One of my favourite snacks is to steam (or cook) some stringless bush beans till a bit al dente, then add a salad dressing of salt, pepper oil and vinegar. I like to use a good pepper as this makes all the difference.

dogmandu · 29/01/2022 08:56

forgot to say I cut the beans into bite size chucks

Baystard · 29/01/2022 09:06

My arms are itchy today. I've had a few itchy spots appearing on arms and hands over the last few weeks that I've treated with a dab of otc steroid cream (looked like dermatitis), it settles them down but then it comes back after a day or two. This morning my arms feel a bit hot and a bit prickly (if it wasn't January I'd say it felt like too much sun) though there's nothing to see apart from a few tiny little patches of a rash.

Does this sound like keto rash? I haven't changed washing powder.

dogmandu · 29/01/2022 09:33

I have the same issue Baystard.

I steam a lot of vegetables and am thinking it might b a good idea to drink the remaining water.

missfliss · 29/01/2022 10:04

I use Apple cider vinegar and salt to make 1 pt electrolyte drink - really helps - I have it in the morning and then water throughout day ( sometimes chicken bone broth too).

Having a go at making some low carb rolls to freeze this morning.

I periodically buy the ones from the low carb food company but thought I'd have a go at my own using their flour today ...

NigellaAwesome · 29/01/2022 10:06

Morning all,

Sympathies on the itching and anxiety front. I had both for the first 3 weeks, not sure if bootcamp related or not. Thankfully both are clearing up, although I have woken up this morning with some unspecified dread, and I haven't quite worked out why.

In other news, I'm not really a big carb replacement fan, as I generally think it is the start of a slippery slope for me, but I bought these wraps yesterday for very occasional use. 4g carbs per wrap.

I tried my ski trousers this morning. The poppers are definitely under less strain. Will photograph on Monday.

I hope everyone has a great day.

Some people feel like that when they go into deep ketosis although it will get easier over time. As BIWI says I'd increase your carb intake slightly to see whether it resolves. You can do this by adding fruit and/or nuts in or if you feel really bad then try a higher carb food to see whether it resolves the issue. I used to hate going into deep ketosis (less than 20g carbs per day) but now it doesn't affect me that way any more so it's probably because you're still adapting to a lower carb intake.
YesIcan3 · 29/01/2022 10:12

Morning all lost another 4lbs since my last weigh in Grin

DearZoom · 29/01/2022 10:13

Any suggestions for on plan Wagamama? I was thinking maybe chicken ramen without the noodles?

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 29/01/2022 10:42
@UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea

You haven't stalled! You will not lose weight every day.

Just keep going and - if you're getting het up about no loss on a daily basis, stop daily weighing!
Thanks @BIWI I'm feeling really bloated and lumpy today. So something is going on. On the plus side I felt really good in my circuits class this morning. I'm resigned to a stagnant week on the scales but am continuing to trust the process.

venusandmars · 29/01/2022 10:42

Was at friends for an italian wine tasting last night. The food was good - olives, nuts, cold meats, spinach and ricotta cannelloni (I ditched the pasta and only ate the filling), meatballs in tomato ragu (I made that one so I know it was OK), and cheese. And I didn't have the tiramisu or ice cream. But as the name suggests wine was tasted. Feeling quite rough this morning but perked up after apple cider vinegar in soda water.

Weather is wild today but planning a good long blowy walk later. Need to go food shopping - green veg soup for lunch, avocado mozzarella and tomato for dinner.

prettybird · 29/01/2022 11:00

@venusandmars - I'm still trying to get back on track weight wise after all the wine that was partaken on Tuesday night's Burns Supper Shock even though I had less than the others Wink

BIWI · 29/01/2022 11:58

@UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea if you're bloated, you need to drink more water.

But also, looking at the spreadsheet, you only weigh 9 stone 2, so you surely can't have much weight to lose - which does mean that the rate of loss will be slow at this point.

Baystard · 29/01/2022 12:10

Hoping to stay firmly on the wagon today (all the more motivated by scales that haven't moved in a week).

B- fasting
L- fasting
D- roast chicken, celeriac mash, celeriac dauphinoise, carrots and roast onion. Followed by stewed rhubarb and cream.

I know carrots and rhubarb aren't great normally but I'm going to move to bootcamp light for a while to see if it helps my itching. I'm also going to think more about protein as I wonder if I'm getting too much, I calculated that I could get about 90g in a typical day so I'll try to eat more butter and less cheese.

Frenchpoodle · 29/01/2022 12:27

@NigellaAwesome sending good wishes for your ski trousers! I am feeling positive that you will be getting into them comfortably Smile Sorry to hear you’ve woken up with the dread - and to everyone who’s feeling some anxiety, sending warm and calming thoughts

@dogmandu I love a green bean, will give that one a go

Away for work at the moment so today’s food
B - Cooked breakfast with double mushrooms
D - Likely to be a Nando’s. About to check out the menu, any LC suggestions welcome

Jezzballs2000 · 29/01/2022 12:30

Hello all, i've had a super busy few days so was just about managing to read the thread and when about to post i have lured away by toddler, or in laws, who I am staying with for a few days. I'm not eating that brilliantly as i am being entirely catered for so just trying to avoid the potatoes and toast and wine and keep drinking water.

I am so grateful for all the cabbage recipes, thank you! I made a sort of version of several by sautéing with butter at a high heat and then braising for about 15/20 mins and then adding some leftover lemon garlic cream sauce and topping with hot smoked salmon. It was gorgeous. This was the good old days of food autonomy! Today I have had

B cups of tea (other option was toast or porridge)
S peanut butter choco thing. Totally off but i don't think it contained flour or much sugar (certainly tasted like it didn't)
L TBC, prob cheese with a bite of toast to avoid explaining 'faddy' diet
D Salmon and veg so not too bad

They are very sensitive to food things as my husbands brother became obsessive about food and diet and health, and died by suicide 18 months ago. So I just don't get into anything beyond passing up dessert. But I think that while I've not been Ms Ketosis 2022 I've also adapted and feel good in myself.

RagzRebooted · 29/01/2022 12:37

Morning all. I've recruited a colleague to the low carb side, have sent a link to @BIWI's rules as they are a nice easy list of dos and don'ts. We really do need that book @BIWI... Wink

I need a slow cooker recipe for chicken thigh curry. I have coconut milk, cream and most spices. Haven't found any online that grab me yet and nothing quite right in the recipe thread.

Does anyone have a recipe they use!

Jezzballs2000 · 29/01/2022 12:39

@Baystard i LOVE rhubarb and have been wondering how to eat it on this WOE without adding sugar. what's your method?

Any other rhubarb recipes very welcome!
