Week 2 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp Thread

BIWI · 23/01/2022 22:49

As I'm doing more and more often, I'm starting the next week's thread on a Sunday evening.

This is because, since I've retired, I am no longer controlled by the tyranny of my alarm clock, and so will often sleep too late on a Monday morning for all the keen Bootcampers!

I love the first post of week 2, because for all those who are new and/or are sceptics about low carbing, this is the point at which they may realise just how effective a low carb WOE can be.

Anyway, here is the spreadsheet, and I really look forward to seeing everyone's progress

Flowers for us all

My teenagers are asking for one of these grills . Is it the Ninja Foodi MAX Health Grill Air Fryer & Dehydrator? I’m not a kitchen gadget person so I’m reluctant to get it unless it’s really useful.[/quote]
Yes, that’s the one. It makes nice crispy bacon, lovely browned sausages. I roasted the potatoes for Christmas dinner in it (for my visiting family, we skipped those). Last night I used the roast setting to oven bake some chicken shawarma and peppers. When I’m making Moussaka I use the grill setting to precook my aubergine slices and it does them much quicker than oven roasting (which is how I did them previously), and they get a great colour. You can cook quite a few things direct from frozen too which is great when you haven’t got anything out the night before. It has a thermometer, so if you attach that and pop it in your steak/chicken/roast it will cook to the desired temperature (you just tell it how well done/rare you want it). Things cook faster, so it takes a bit of getting used to, but the guide that came with it gave a lot of recommended temperature settings/timings for foods. It’s big though, so it does need a bit of worktop space. Saying that our kitchen is pretty small, and we’ve fitted it in ok.

Thanks @MotherBuckets just ordered some!

BIWI · 28/01/2022 17:53

@Newlease

And I am struggling with water in take.. I prepare a jug full of lime and salt mix for the day, but then all I want is something hot with the weather staying like this

Why not try drinking hot water? It's lovely with a slice or two of lemon in it

Thanks @MotherBuckets - have ordered too!

SpottyBumPony · 28/01/2022 18:20

I learnt a life lesson today, the cauliflower that you pick up on a whin in M&S at lunchtime is rather heavy why the time you walk back to the office Grin. I found the Parma Ham and Chorizo 'chips' wahoo

B Greek Yoghurt, cream, cinnamon
L Leftover roast baby aubergines with sprouts and feta. Cherry tomatoes and chicken sausages.
S Chorizo crisps
D Frittata with asparagus, black olives and feta. Might throw in some green beans and shallot as well

Jollyholibobs · 28/01/2022 18:22

Thanks @MotherBuckets I’ve ordered. Will hide when they arrive last time I invested in them I was somewhat disappointed to be informed by a family member that they been really nice with his G&T. Angry

Runninghorse · 28/01/2022 18:55

@MotherBuckets

I am struggling a bit with cheese tbh, I am eating far too much of it between meals even though I'm not necessarily hungry... there's 50 years of emotional snackage to unpick I think.
Cheese has always been my downfall. I have still lost weight since we started despite picking so I am not worrying about my cheese intake ATM
Baystard · 28/01/2022 19:22

Bit of a migraine here today (silent type that feels very unpleasant but without the splitting headache). Felt very sick at lunchtime though so had some crackling which was the only thing that vaguely appealed, and felt a bit better. Possibly the salt was what I needed.
Had some chinese takeaway (bean sprouts, satay skewers without sauce, a few prawn crackers) with the family for dinner, made good choices. Then I horsed in a couple of sweet and sour chicken balls and a few spoonfuls of rice and now I feel sick in body, and really quite depressed in mind. Sad

The migraine has made me a bit depressed, I'm sure it's only temporary, but thoughtlessly stuffing my face has made it worse.

I'll need to flag down the next passing wagon in the morning.

Luckydog7 · 28/01/2022 19:46

@Newlease

I put the ranch recipe under the crispy chicken one but not very specific so here it is again with rough measurements.

2 heaped tbs full fat mayo
2 heaped table spoon sour cream
one heaped tsp onion powder
one tsp each of dried chives and paisley.
Good grind of pepper

you can add powdered onion too but as its quite carby i ommitted.

Luckydog7 · 28/01/2022 19:48

@WitchWand

Yeah i find the sweet spot hits between day 10 and 14. ive been low carbing on and off for over a decade and its still a shock every time how different it feels from the bloated, flabby, tired mess i was beforehand.

Luckydog7 · 28/01/2022 19:53

RE plateauing this early. i find that i sometimes have a flat few days weight wise, feel disheartened only to do a massive....well lets say the carriages were stuck in the tunnel for a while until enough of them arrived... after that i would drop a pound or so. rinse and repeat every 3/4 days.

I find half a magnesium pill every day or other day helps...oil the tracks.

I0NA · 28/01/2022 19:54

Thanks @2022sucksalready

BIWI · 28/01/2022 19:55

If the trains are getting stuck in the tunnel @Luckydog7, then up your water and fat.

Strong black coffee in the morning, and a brisk walk, incorporating some star jumps and a few burpees.

BIWI · 28/01/2022 19:56

... and of course, make sure you're getting plenty of veg and salad in your meals!

its not a lack of water or fat (im consuming tonnes of both), im not constipated, i think its just considerably less fiber in my diet without carbs so things have slowed down. Its not a problem other then delaying the weightloss :)

ShangPie · 28/01/2022 20:11

@Baystard sorry to hear the Chinese takeaway minor incident and migraine have got you down. If you’re feeling sick, maybe some water with fresh lemon and ginger might help?

Chin up, tomorrow is another day Flowers

Newlease · 28/01/2022 20:15

@BIWI I have read that before as well.. will give it a go. I do have a bad headache as well today. I have done keto on and off, but never had headaches, used to get itchy when I just eat meat and eggs, hence my decision to join the bootcamp. So I can share the journey and get help..
@Luckydog7, thanks a lot. Definitely getting all those stuff to make some chicken nuggets.I promised my son home made kfc-like chicken ages ago and never got round to do it. Costco trip is needed anyway, so will get one of those massive chicken breast pack.
Also, does anyone knows how kebab vans prepare the red cabbage and other stuff.. I eat everything comes with kebab, but when I start LCbing, I end up with lettuce and cherry tomatoes and more like a summer salad

Have you read the various posts on here about electrolytes? That might explain your headache.

Thank you @ShangPie that's a good idea, I've been sipping peppermint tea but some ginger might be better.

SpottyBumPony · 28/01/2022 20:52

My fritatta was bloody delicious, poor DH had to listen to me moan in delight while I ate it.

prettybird · 28/01/2022 21:30

@MotherBuckets - maybe not quite yet for you but I find that a couple of extended fasts (36 hours initially but I have done 60 hours) help me to break my habit because that's all it is Blush of snacking. It proves to me that I'm not eating out of hunger (as on a 36 hour fast I'm not actually hungry) as I'm only really hungry as I approach 48 hours (I could do 60 because the last 8 hours were sleeping Grin)

I'm used to doing 16:8 intermittent fasting though, am an experienced Boot Camper with the occasional falling off the wagon Blush and have no history of disordered eating. Smile

Newlease · 28/01/2022 21:43

@BIWI yes, I have read that. From day one I drink a kind of lime and salt mix in water and was never had headache. That was lacking a bit for two days, instead I drank normal water from bottle today. I will get back to strict water (salty lemonade as I call it) consumption.. meals are going well, had steak and mushroom in cream sauce for dinner and left over chicken and broccoli soup was for lunch. Have mince in fridge, looking forward to a lovely burger with cheese and bacon for lunch tomorrow :) I’ll update tomorrow

APerfectlyGoodName · 28/01/2022 22:35

I'm hanging in! I'm not feeling 100% but I'm putting it down to quitting caffeine.
My breakfast is my main meal, eggs, veg and cheese. It really sets me up for the day. Today I tried Portobello mushrooms - they were undercooked & unpleasant. So I was hungry & had lunch & supper. Weird.
Bring on tomorrow.

prettybird · 28/01/2022 22:57

Had a lovely supper tonight of shoogled sprouts and Cava Smile I didn't feel like doing much more after rugby training Wink

Luckydog7 · 29/01/2022 06:33

I've been sleeping really badly and just remembered i had a similar issue last time. its kind of like anxiety, feel very jittery and can't calm my mind enough to sleep, very strange as ive been sleeping like the dead up until a few days ago. can anyone advise what to do, will it improve? I know low carb can effect you more if you have anxiety for instance. I don't as far as i know.
