Week 2 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp Thread

As I'm doing more and more often, I'm starting the next week's thread on a Sunday evening.

This is because, since I've retired, I am no longer controlled by the tyranny of my alarm clock, and so will often sleep too late on a Monday morning for all the keen Bootcampers!

I love the first post of week 2, because for all those who are new and/or are sceptics about low carbing, this is the point at which they may realise just how effective a low carb WOE can be.

Anyway, here is the spreadsheet, and I really look forward to seeing everyone's progress

Flowers for us all

Thanks @StuntNun. @prettybirdI wish I lived near you. You are a fab cook.
Today
Scrambled egg with butter
Spicy fridge soup - mainly broccoli
Minced lamb cooked with leeks, courgettes and an aubergine. Lots of spices and a dollop of Greek yoghurt on the side.

Wilkolampshade · 26/01/2022 08:45

Morning all 😊
I'm a daily weigh-in type as like to keep an eye on trends.
In case it's any help I thought I'd share my current weight loss mini 'plateau' Smile... Bang on schedule in week 3! It won't happen to everyone, but if it does, don't panic! Hopefully next week, or the week after, will look more like the earlier section.
I had exactly the same last time I did this so not worried.
Will tighten the reins a bit on portion size, whilst retaining % macros, up the water and move much, much more.

Cherries that's definitely a few things stacked against you. If my lifestyle becomes overwhelmingly busy food slips down the list. Anyway good for you for hanging in there.

Another regular weigher here, and I'm down another 1.4lb which brings me to 12st even. Today is my shopping /planning day and I have lots of ideas from the thread, so thanks all.
The sun is shining here today, a beautiful day in the West of Ireland! Happy day my loser friends.

Jezzballs2000 · 26/01/2022 09:53

I'm so annoyed, I carefully packed my mini frittatas and then forgot them as I rushed to get my train to London. And I usually eat around 8am so now really hungry (9.48). I am going to get a coffee and if I'm desperate some emergency nuts but hopefully i can hold out till 11 when I arrive.

I also discovered that heart palpitations are a ketosis thing which I think explains my extra anxiety. I was fully expecting the headaches etc but this seems to be how it's manifesting itself. It will pass and i'll up my electrolytes and water, so I feel positive (though stressed Grin).

Today i'll have some kind of breakfast, a LC Pret lunch and steak and veg for dinner!

ShangPie · 26/01/2022 10:12

That’s so annoying @Jezzballs2000 - hate it when that happens. Good luck with hunting down an alternative.

What a Burns Night supper! Mine was significantly less impressive than @prettybird’s but still delicious. Creamy whiskey sauce on fatty meat followed by a bowl of cream? Don’t mind if I do!

Trying to get better at planning meals for a few days ahead. Currently I forget what I planned and get more out of the freezer or at the supermarket, so we have fresh stuff to use up while leftovers pile up… must get more organised.

B creamy coffee, handful of olives and chorizo
L creamy chicken and veg soup
D steak w cauli and celeriac cheese, FLGV

And water water water! Trying to sip it rather than glug 500ml in one go. It makes a difference to my bladder, but I don’t drink as much this way. Need to find a balance

SpottyBumPony · 26/01/2022 10:39

Forgot to post yesterday's food, I got a bit anxious about the office bomb that boss dropped and could feel myself panicking but stuck on plan-ish.

I had to pick something up from fb marketplace at lunch to had an hour walk instead of going in the car.

B Greek Yog and cream
L Entire block of halloumi - oops
S Creamy coffee
D Chicken sausages, celeriac mash, spinach, saute green beans with garlic

Work is a trigger to binge eat at lunch time for me, so I've come up with a strategy: If I feel like to need to 'Eat' in order to get through the day, can I ...

  1. Go for a walk to clear my mind, if I can't face that
  2. See if my work friends are free and suggest we eat together so that I am accountable and not on my own, if not and I still need to go and buy food
  3. Go to Tesco and buy something hot from the deli counter like chicken or a bacon joint, if that doesn't cut it
  4. Go to KFC for chicken but no carbs.

I can easily go and eat two meals from a drive though or a pack of cakes and a giant bag of crisps, probably with chocolate too if I binge

Frenchpoodle · 26/01/2022 11:04

Sound good strategies @SpottyBumPony am impressed with your ability to be self-aware and mindful, it’s a real skill (that I need to develop!)

Any activities you could do at lunchtime that you enjoy, trip to the library to pick a favourite book, online meditation, downloading a favourite TV show to watch? Anything pleasurable that you can look forward to and might fufil that emotional trigger that leads to bingeing?

Frenchpoodle · 26/01/2022 11:06

@prettybird Your Burn’s Night looks amazeballs!

Food today:
L - homemade cauliflower and broccoli soup
D - steak, green beans, rocket and asparagus

Just off for a PCR, wish me luck Hmm

EwanHoozami · 26/01/2022 11:07

Morning campers. Thank you for the tips on good scales. Mine arrived this morning.

last time I was weighed was fully weighed was fully clothed at the GPs in Nov and I'm over a stone lighter now.

So unless jeans and a jumper weigh a stone I reckon I'm doing OK! Still a way off from the Miracle Jeans though Grin

Today:
B - three fried eggs on buttery spinach (nausea has gone - hurrah - eggs are back ON!)
L - random charcuterie
D - celeriac fish pie with cavolo Nero

SpottyBumPony · 26/01/2022 11:09

@Frenchpoodle I'm going to bring my knitting in I think as I haven't done any at home for ages #oldlady Grin

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 26/01/2022 11:09

@EwanHoozami that's amazing! Well done. Absolutely inspiring.

EwanHoozami · 26/01/2022 11:21

Thank you! I should say that I’ve been doing this since 1st Jan and this morning’s weigh was nekkid, but I’ve definitely shifted a decent amount.

venusandmars · 26/01/2022 11:45

Great tactics @SpottyBumPony planning for those trigger moments is an excellent plan. Plus, by the time you've tried all of them in sequence lunch time will have nearly passed Smile

B - creamy coffee
L - omelette with veg and cheese
D - left over beef rendang with green beans and roast cauliflower

Just drinking a huge mug of raspberry and lemon tea - so delicious

Oneborneverydecade · 26/01/2022 12:40

@EwanHoozami well done!

@SpottyBumPony it's so hard when you need to break a habit isn't it, for me it's a vicious cycle because carb brain fog makes it hard to break a habit, and that habit causes brain fog

My DD had me awake at 4am coughing this morning, we never got back to sleep. Well she's sleeping now and I'm about to join her.

B: Bills full English (using up Christmas gift cards)
S: 73% dark choc hot chocolate with coconut milk (I know this is off plan but see above Confused)
D: cheeseburger and flgv

Also I can't remember who else had them but I bought some cacao nibs, I've only had a couple to try but they're really nice. I thought they'd be bitter

And my copy of The Diet Whisperer arrived. Just need to actually read it now.

Wishing you all a good day

pinknsparkly · 26/01/2022 12:55

Thanks for the mentions of M&S foods on previous chats. I forgot to make a lunch for today so got some prawns plus cheese wrapped in Parma ham for my lunch. Not the best as there wasn't a vegetable in sight but I did enjoy it!

Also, NSV.... two different people at work today told me I'd lost "quite a bit" of weight. I thought I spotted my jawline in the mirror last night too for the first time in quite a while Grin

AllTheBlackCoffee · 26/01/2022 13:03

Wow @prettybird your meal looked amazing - looked like something you'd get in a restaurant!

Glad to see the four week plan has gone down well Smile I will endeavour to add the random recipes to the relevant threads when I get a sec but if anyone wants any specific ones before then, give me a nudge.

I was wondering whether there'd be interest in a separate thread for BCers with thyroid conditions? Reading through this and past bootcamps, I've noticed quite a lot of people talking about this and it can be so hard to loose weight, so thought it might be good for us to have a place to moan chat away from the main thread to avoid derailing?? Just an idea anyway - let me know if there's any interest.

Started the day with a PT session, so feeing very virtuous and am about to walk the dog for some fresh air. Today's plan:
B: coffee (IF)
L: bacon, mushroom and halloumi salad
D: chicken, leeks, courgette, mushrooms, shallot in tinned toms, cauli rice

Falling Beijing with my water so will get on it when I'm back home this aft.

Great idea to have such strategies.

But looking at number 4 - here are the carb counts just so that you know! No such thing as 'no carbs' at KFC.

@Oneborneverydecade let me know what you think of the Diet Whisperer. I read it very quickly as I wanted to start their diet but to read the whole thing first. I probably need to reread it in fact. It's very eye opening to the LC newbie though. I actually ended up going more for the @BIWI / bootcamp style of LC WOE as I was enjoying this thread so much.

Jezzballs2000 · 26/01/2022 13:49

Lunch at wholefoods and almost nothing left at the deli counter so just billions of green beans and a cheesy chicken breast. I'll need more fat after this!

I just went to buy the Why we eat too much book and Amazon helpfully reminded me that I bought the kindle edition two weeks ago! Blush

For those that are struggling to drop the sweet stuff in the evening, I heartily recommend the Twinings Buttermint tea. I had a big mug of it last night while DH ate a whole tub of ice cream and I was fine!

Food for today:
B - coffee (IF)
L - homemade tomato soup, cheese and M&S seed crackers (I ate two before I realised we're not allowed seeds yet)
D - carbonara with konjac noodles

pinknsparkly · 26/01/2022 14:18

@AllTheBlackCoffee - I'd be interested in joining a thyroid specific BC thread. I'm only marginally hypothyroid (not enough to be medicated for it, but enough to be symptomatic....). I'm also convinced it's playing no small part in the struggles I had getting pregnant first time round (took two years) and my lack of luck this time round (12 months and counting), but that's not really a bootcamp issue Grin

I agree about the buttermint tea. (I'm serving it to myself from a pretty teapot and in matching cup.)

I'm not weighing (no bathroom scales) but seem to be fitting into clothes almost as well as before December and its festive eating.

The system is working :)

NigellaAwesome · 26/01/2022 15:27

I had a poor night's sleep last night, awake from 3am to 6am, and I can definitely tell today. Very unmotivated, and needing to snack. On top of my lunch (green beans, pancetta, fried radish & fried egg), I have had 2 bags of pork scratchings and some raspberries.

On better news, I am planning to start cooking later and will do my signature coriander & lime dressing, frittata, and stuffed peppers.

Glenthebattleostrich · 26/01/2022 15:48

Afternoon all

@Hopeislost how do you make your soup? I'm missing a nice lunchtime soup.

I have the fast800 keto book. There are some lovely recipes in there although they are mostly for bootcamp light.

I'm doing my menu for next week, so if anyone has nay inspiration I'd appreciate it!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/01/2022 16:27

Agvolemono soup is great. Egg, chicken stock and lemon. It's twitchy though so you can't reheat it.
