Week 2 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp Thread

BIWI · 23/01/2022 22:49

As I'm doing more and more often, I'm starting the next week's thread on a Sunday evening.

This is because, since I've retired, I am no longer controlled by the tyranny of my alarm clock, and so will often sleep too late on a Monday morning for all the keen Bootcampers!

I love the first post of week 2, because for all those who are new and/or are sceptics about low carbing, this is the point at which they may realise just how effective a low carb WOE can be.

Anyway, here is the spreadsheet, and I really look forward to seeing everyone's progress

Flowers for us all

I'm feeling really pleased with myself that I haven't strayed off the WOE with everything that's going on. A quick stop off at Tesco on the way back from FILs the other day means the fridge is full of things I can eat, so I'm not tempted because I like the food I have and I don't feel deprived.

Like others, I've also found I'm now able not to snack. This is week three for me, so it's actually happened pretty quickly. Still peeings loads though Grin

Today's food...
B: scrambled eggs and veg in butter with a splash of cream
L: cold meats and cheeses, olives, feta stuffed peppers, Greek yogurt and cream with pecans
D: two rashers of bacon with courgettes, peppers and tomatoes (not too many of these!) roasted in olive oil

prettybird · 25/01/2022 19:18

We're having a stack of seared scallops, Stornaway blank pudding and steak back on creamy celeriac, with rocket, apple jelly and (Blush) balsamic vinegar garnish, followed by haggis, very buttery Wink neeps 'n' tatties which I won't have with "cranachan with a twist" for dessert (whipped cream, a generous slug of whisky , a spoonful of inulin and raspberries (from our garden/the freezer) and toasted flaked almonds folded through the cream.

All washed down with some very nice wine Smile (disclaimer: I'm quite deliberately in Week 3 Grin )

Our guests are only due at 7.30 (we've all done LFTs) and I'm sitting in the living room having got everything ready in advance Halo

Dh is even wearing his kilt squeezed into it - but only because one of our guests is wearing his Shock

@prettybird

Slàinte mhath!

DearZoom · 25/01/2022 19:44

Ah man. I wish I was in Scotland (and at @prettybird’s)

Oneborneverydecade · 25/01/2022 19:57

Have a wonderful evening @prettybird sounds delicious (I've got flashbacks to last year's Jan bootcamp and learning what neeps are).

B: ham, cheese, tomato, cucumber. 2 thin sausages
L: h/made sausage & tomato soup
S: lrg spoon clotted cream Blush
D: Harissa chicken breast, roasted aubergine and pureed cauliflower. Yum

Going to tackle cheeseburger pie tomorrow as DH is going into the office.

ZiggZagg · 25/01/2022 20:58

Just trying to catch up with the thread, it's so quick moving!

Partly, in thanks to Covid, I lost 8lb last week. Feeling much better now so will have to watch what I'm eating! This will be like week 1 for me as I wasn't too great last week!

Meal planning for this week so will start with eggs for breakfast tomorrow with maybe some steak salad for dinner, even though I can't taste it Sad

fitflopqueen · 25/01/2022 21:02

Question - has anyone tried making lentil wraps? poached from F800 FB page.

I think the carb count is ok, perhaps not for initial boot campers,- have a half cup measure = 80g of split red lentil, wash well and soak for 6 hrs in cup of water, blend well, dry fry over medium heat for 1-2 mins each side and makes about 6 saucer sized wraps/base - quite flexible to roll if needed, although needs a bit of practice to cook them, bit like the first pancake on Shrove Tuesday.

The waitrose info is 7.4g carbs/100g, any thoughts.
Have tested as cheese on toast sub - very nice. Only 2 at a time though. Could add spices to the mix for variety.

AThroneOfLies · 25/01/2022 21:13

Marking place, busy few days but still KOKO.
Will read and reply later on

SummerSazz · 25/01/2022 21:34

The Burns night dinners sound delicious!!

I've taken an accountability photo so just logging it here to keep me on track 😄. Also entered my wk2 weight on the spreadsheet and lovely to see my 1st week loss pre boot camp is recorded. Thankyou @BIWI

I've been working 12hr days which has been a good food distraction technique..... 🤨 but not much chance to post.

Food and water good and despite no loss for wk2 another 1lb is off today so hopefully on another downward trend (6lbs in week 1)

Re oils, I've used cold pressed rapeseed for ages and in most cooking. I buy it in 5l vats and decant. Luckily keeps for ages.

Oh and I'm working in London the next two days with lunches and dinner 'out'. Have made pret lunch choices already and I'm sure there will be some LC options on the menu for dinner I really should check-

DollyDingleberry · 25/01/2022 21:40

Well I survived the bistro minefield Grin

Yes, the bistro is free and we were all sat around the table to order - it was a work ‘lunch out’ type thing so it would have been akin to taking a packed lunch to a restaurant Grin

Anyway, I had a tuna salad. Technically I ordered a tuna jacket potato but explained I wanted it as a salad and they were fine about it. Sat and watched my colleagues tuck into pulled pork wraps and potato wedges which smelled amazing but I couldn’t risk the bbq sauce on the pulled pork, it was probably pretty sugary.

I ended up skipping breakfast and throwing a cup of creamy coffee down my neck in the car on the way to work. The baby had a late start so it was a major rush this morning. It was ok though, I’m now in bed and today I’ve eaten:

B: creamy coffee
L: tuna salad
D: steak cooked in butter, grilled asparagus and tomatoes and celeriac chips.

Not a bad day food wise but I was a bit hungry after lunch due to lack of fat I think. All things considered though I’m pretty pleased with how I managed a tricky situation and I’m chalking that up as a little victory.

quince2figs · 25/01/2022 21:42

Joining you all if that’s ok? Not on spreadsheet, just for support. I have a good 5 stone to lose, anc have done for maybe 10 years?

I can feel my carb addiction ramp up year by year and have decided must change before I eat my way into type 2 diabetes.

Week 1 last week … not 100% perfect… but carb cravings not as bad as I expected, given I normally exist on carbs (often alone). Very cheered to lose 3.5kg/7lb after week 1 - amazing.
This week not going so well as I was not very prepared in shopping. I can feel my clothes are looser and I am less bloated already.
Very helpful to read everyone’s advice and recipes 😀

Sorry, but lentils (or any other pulses/legumes) aren't allowed on Bootcamp.

Inspired by the "good oils" discussion, I've ordered a tub of cod liver oil supplements from Holland &Barret on the basis that if they don't do me any good, they're unlikely to do me any harm.

The evidence on too much Omega-6 vs Omega-3 oils in our diet from "Why We Eat too Much" is quite interesting, though I'm still finding the book horrifying and compelling in equal measures.

DH was pretty surprised this afternoon when I announced I would be feeding him cod liver supplements tooGrin

fitflopqueen · 25/01/2022 22:18

BIWI thought so hence asking, thanks

prettybird · 25/01/2022 22:24

We had a lovely Burns Supper Smile - very successful.

With the exception of the haggis (which would still have had a low GI with its oatmeal but also loads of fat Smile ) it was all HFLC Grin

Looks amazing @prettybird. Very pan loaf 😉

APerfectlyGoodName · 25/01/2022 22:57

OMG pretty that all looks so tasty.
B. Creamy coffee. Eggs, broccoli and blue cheese.
L. Tomato soup, with added pesto and Philadelphia. Less than 5g carb per 100 but likely 15g carb overall. I'll try to keep up a HM supply.
D. Chicken fajitas mix with yogurt.

My energy is way higher this week.

On a separate note, I LOVE my morning coffee. But it's big. I use 3 scoops of ground coffee to make 500mls. It's begun to cause bladder irritability, a sudden urgent need to pee, and I pee so often! I've checked with a physio in women's health - coffee is the likely culprit. So starting tomorrow, I'm going to try decaf. SadBrew
I am sad (ish).

NigellaAwesome · 25/01/2022 23:07

@prettybird that looks amazing! I love how you dressed the table.

I bought 2 new fruit teas. Raspberry & Cranberry by Twinings, and Very Berry by Thompson's. I can recommend both.

B: coffee
L: Asparagus & leek soup. Pancetta with green beans and a fried egg, with a dollop of mayo. Yum
D: pork belly slice with braised cabbage and Nigella seeds (of course Grin)

Tomorrow is an insanely busy day, so I am just planning for a frittata for tomorrow night's dinner.

Benvolio · 25/01/2022 23:23

@prettybird what a beautiful celebration. Wish I was Scottish! Used to work with ancient Scottish manuscripts but that doesn't count.

ilovecherries · 25/01/2022 23:49

Just popping in to say hello. Should be more active next week. I’m keeping on, still feeling sick/smelly/itchy and palpitations. All of which I experienced last time, so not too concerned. My business tanked completely during covid and I thought retirement had finally hit but I got an unexpected last minute project this week as the original contractor has covid. Didn’t want to refuse but it really couldn’t have come at a worse time. So on top of all the aforementioned woes I working about 18 hours at day. Well done all the loses this week Smile

DollyDingleberry · 26/01/2022 06:06

Morning all, checking in for the day.

B: creamy coffee, cream and Greek yoghurt
L: chicken and halloumi kebabs, salad
D: chicken curry

Another 2lbs have vanished since Monday, I’m expecting these to reappear potentially but that makes me half a stone down in 10 days which is brilliant.

DS slept through last night but I’m still exhausted. It’s my turn for a lie in tomorrow so I just need to get through today!

ditavonteesed · 26/01/2022 07:26

@prettybird that looks amazing, glad you had a good time. My dh went to a burns night do my dad organises it but it's only for men which is rude since dh isn't Scottish. He also organises a Yorkshire night which I also can't go to as men only and I brought dh to Yorkshire from the big smoke. Can you tell I'm bitter.

Day 1 in my health and wellness spa at home went very well and I'm down 1lb, did exercise, walked 7.5. Miles and ate well. Also all the water. (I decided that my 12 days off work I'm pretending I'm at a health spa, if only it wasn't full of stroppy teenagers they really should vet who can come to these places).

BIWI · 26/01/2022 08:01

It's a shame @fitflopqueen, because I love them (and they're really good for you) but just too carby right now!

Menu and table dressing looks amazing @prettybird
