Is anybody interested in a January Low Carb Bootcamp?

The last one was pretty quiet, so I'm trying to gauge how many would be interested in a January one - probably starting around the middle of the month.

@StuntNun I will need to namechange then 🙂 no Ocado here but will explore cauliflower rice

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal that’s interesting. I usually prepare curry for me and DH, he hates spinach with a passion.
Funny like green bits called coriander are ok and green bits called spinach are not 🙄

I must say I’m a bit gutted seeing so many fruit and veg on the “red” list.
Winter is a time to consume vast quantities of root veg and wide array of slaws in different combos.

Just finished the rest of my sour cucumber soup ,off to take the fish out of the freezer.

Hello all, I'd like to join! Shamefully flaked out of the last one following a lot of upheaval (break up and new job), then comfort ate my way through a couple of months and am now heavier than I've ever been. Started using Hello Fresh a couple of weeks ago just to get some structure/veg into my life, but could do taking more control of meals etc. Bit new to low carb, but I really need to make a significant change, and think this might work well for me.

@FrenchBoule there aren't many veg on the red list though Confused

The red ones are:

Sweetcorn, kernels
Squash, butternut
Artichoke, Jerusalem
Peas, frozen
Parsnip
Baked beans
Potatoes, new and salad
Potatoes, old
Sweet potato

... but there a load more veg on the green and amber list, so you will have plenty to eat.

Fruit, of course, is a different matter. Don't forget that along with the vitamins/minerals/fibre, you're also getting a whole load of sugar - which is what we're trying to avoid. And you can get all the nutrients you need from veg/salad anyway - along with the 'green' fruits after the first two weeks.

I know after the first couple berries are allowed (in strict moderation!) but I had a look at a few websites and oranges were mentioned. 9 carbs per orange. But I don't know if that's American net carbs or UK actual carbs. Will a small amount of orange be allowed come the end of Jan? I miss them so much on this WOE.

Minkymoo74 · 06/01/2022 18:00

Yes please. I've already started following a Carbish free duet. Bloated tummy gone down the first week. Still trying to get my head round mumsnet platform though:/

FrenchBoule · 06/01/2022 18:34

That’s better @BIWI, thank you 🙂
Just mixed kimchi today, hope it’s allowed as well 🙂

Well ultimately it's down to you @MrsTerryPratchett. They're 8.2g carbs per 100g.

We don't count carbs, as you know, and obviously it's better to be getting your carbs from an orange rather than a potato or a pile of pasta!

But remember, we're also trying to break the hold that sweet stuff has over us, which is the other reason for not eating fruit.

I'd definitely say don't eat any orange during the first two weeks, and only if you absolutely have to when we move to Bootcamp Light.

I've been trying to work my way through the Christmas satsumas and Christmas Lebkuchen ahead of the 17th.

prettybird · 06/01/2022 19:13

Once we're into Boot Camp Light, I make a lovely "orange and cardamom chocolate pots" dessert that uses the zest and juice of an orange. But as it makes 7 or 8 rich little ramekins/espresso cups with one orange, that's not much fruit Wink (the other ingredients are a small amount of milk/cream, eggs and melted high % cocoa chocolate).

Oneborneverydecade · 06/01/2022 19:14

Apologies I need to go back and rtft but I'm reporting for duty
I'm kicking myself. Never managed to get properly back on the lchf bike after losing 4.5st and as a result I've gained 1.5st in about 6 months.
The only reason it's not worse is because my DH hasn't given up on cooking me lc meals.
My jeans are so tight I've taken to wearing a pair of dungarees.
I need the big stick @biwi and both your knowledge BIWI @StuntNun and your humour @shagme

StuntNun · 06/01/2022 19:40

That sucks @Oneborneverydecade but you're getting back on the low carb bike now and that weight will come off again quickly.

dogmandu · 06/01/2022 19:56

@buffy - I'm going to give it a try. Yours sounds promising.

Batshittery · 06/01/2022 19:57

Hello everyone
I'm jumping back in after quite some time away Smile
Thanks BIWI

True.

And same with the pots. I make 8, I eat 8.

Oh well, salmon and mayonnaise instead Grin

prettybird · 06/01/2022 20:09

@MrsTerryPratchett Grin Last time I made them I deliberately made a half quantity (which actually changed it slightly but still very nice Wink) as there were only 3 of us having them and I wanted to be sure that there weren't too many left over Blush

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2022 20:26

Good call @prettybird

Borris · 06/01/2022 22:10

Can I ask whether one weekend in the middle with carbs makes it pointless doing the whole thing or can I get away with that?

Borris · 06/01/2022 22:13

Also is it bad for children? I imagine primary school age dd would eat still have carbs at breakfast and school lunch but we like to eat the same meal for dinner

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/01/2022 22:18

I usually eat the same evening meal as my family, but swap out the carbs for an alternative - so if they're having chips, I'll have griddled asparagus with olive oil and salt, if they're having rice I'll have cauliflower rice, if they're having spaghetti I'll have courgetti, and so on, but the main bit of the meal is usually the same.

prettybird · 06/01/2022 22:35

@Borris - if it's a really special weekend and there is no way around it, then plan for it. @venusandmars has described good strategies for unavoidably carby days in the past, eg reducing the fat that day, watching your portion size.

Try to eat mindfully : appreciate what you are eating and don't just mindlessly shovel the carbs in.

Above all, drink lots of water and get straight back into it as soon as you get back.

Borris · 06/01/2022 22:40

Thank you both. I'm going to give it a go. I think I'll have to literally menu plan all day every day though as I'm normally quite carby (pasta/potatoes/noodles rather than sweet stuff)

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/01/2022 22:43

Tell me some of your regular meals and I'll suggest some substitutes. Honestly, I was sooooo carby 3 years ago before I started this! Smile

prettybird · 06/01/2022 22:56

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal is one of the true Boot Camp success stories Star

Iirc, she is an actress who managed to lose so much enough weight to look much better in her costumes and get better roles Smile

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/01/2022 22:59

'Tis true, I lost three stone and went from servant girls to leading roles (then Covid happened and I've barely worked since 😩)

Borris · 06/01/2022 23:00
