April Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - week 1

BIWI · 11/04/2021 20:54

Welcome everyone!

Here, as ever, is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness created and lovingly managed by the wonderful @AthelstaneTheUnready

Hopefully you should find that you're already on the spreadsheet - but if not, just add your name to the bottom of the list. Don't try to insert it in the right alphabetical place - Athelstane will do that for you. And don't touch the blue cells or try to enter any other data or comments!

For those that are new, each week I'll start a new chat thread, on Monday, and we'll start off with recording our weight.

However

You don't have to use your weight to measure your progress - and you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to be. Instead, take your measurements each week (bust/upper arms/waist/hips/thighs), or find an item of clothing that's just too tight/small right now, and keep trying it on each week.

The rules of Bootcamp are on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet - but here's a quick summary of the rules for the first two weeks:

  1. Eat three meals a day
  2. Avoid processed foods
  3. Eat lots of fat
  4. Make sure you're eating vegetables and salad with your food
  5. Be careful about dairy, apart from butter which is unlimited
  6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day
  7. No alcohol
  8. No fruit
  9. No nuts/seeds
10. No sugar/artificial sweeteners

Make sure you have a really good read of the spreadsheet for the full detail of the rules. Also, check out the tabs at the bottom - there's a huge amount of information that will really help you, especially if you're new to low carbing/Bootcamp.

There's also a thread here of FAQs which should be helpful.

Some thread etiquette

The thread will move really quickly - especially at the beginning.

But please take the time to read everyone's posts, rather than just plopping on with your own comments/thoughts/questions. It's very frustrating when someone comes on to the thread to ask a question that's been posed and answered already!

Don't lurk!

I know that not everyone is confident about posting - and also that there are a lot of posters who are regular Bootcampers, and who know other Bootcampers. Please don't think this is a cliquey thread. It couldn't be further from the truth!

Everyone's views and experiences are welcome and valid, so jump in and post.

Any questions, please just post. Or PM me. There's always someone here who can help - and if I or they can't, then we can always find someone who can!

Above all, very good luck to everyone.

I very much hope that by the time we come to the end of these ten weeks, that we really are (as a country) completely ready to leave Lockdown well behind.

Wishing everyone all the luck Flowers

JimmyJabs I wrote a shopping list for my ex and put Mangetout. He called me at work to say he’d been to 3 shops and asked the staff and couldn’t find any, ‘no one had ever heard of Man get out’ apparently. I laughed so hard I fell off my chair. So Mangetout is now forever ‘man get out’ for me. 😂

TeddingtonTrashbag · 13/04/2021 17:31

@MrsKoala
Thanks!!!!
Also...tabasco -yes or no?
I accidentally added Tabasco instead of Angostura bitters to my low cal tonic water (the only way to wean myself off alcohol) and I like it! But is it allowed????

BIWI · 13/04/2021 17:34

Tabasco (red) is 1.6g carbs per 100ml.

You're a better man than me if you can drink 100ml!

nowlook · 13/04/2021 17:39

Hell yes to Tabasco. Am intrigued as to how much you put in though Teddington Grin Is your face now the colour of a local rugby club chairman?

We had a very long chat last bootcamp about tonic water. I'll not go into detail (I already talk far, far too much because I am excitable), but bear in mind that artificial sweeteners aren't a great idea for all the reasons that are in the rules. Also, some diet tonics do have carbs, so read your labels!

If you're used to drinking a fair bit (plenty here are), you're doing really well. It's hard. Flowers

Ninkanink · 13/04/2021 17:39

Eyes @BIWI again at seemingly no problem with low cal tonic... Hmm

(Only joking - I quite like a tonic with bitters myself here and there when I’m trying to avoid the alcohol!)

nowlook · 13/04/2021 17:43

What did they do to her during that suspension Ninkanink? Grin

Still, at the least the stick's back. Better chance of a flounce that way *

*lighthearted. please nobody flounce.

Dreamqueen · 13/04/2021 17:52

Sorry if this has been asked before. Could someone please explain how the bookmark function works. Thank you.

Chunkymonkey123 · 13/04/2021 18:00

Thanks to everyone for the dinner ideas, going to serve the chicken Alfredo to my in laws on Thursday!
Tonight I’m having beef meatballs in a creamy sauce with courgetti. I didn’t have cream so used creme fresh, is that ok? (I promise I have read the chat and the FAQ!!)

I made my lunch today while I was making breakfast and I think that helped.

Like a lot of you I have been going to the toilet constantly today but the drinking fizzy water is going well.

Ha! For me, that would be a contributing factor to the "ex" part of the equation, and I say that as someone who thought that 'misled' was pronounced 'mizzled' for ages, and only found out otherwise because of the Celine Dion song of the same name.
nowlook · 13/04/2021 18:08

@ListenLinda

Have you had your "return to the office" meeting, or is it on another day? Sorry you're feeling anxious about it. Are you clinically vulnerable? Are you satisfied with the safety measures they've put in place?

Just love this thread!!!!
Shook in a few drops then realised and wondered whether to bin, but drank anyway and I liked it Blush
I do realise that diet drinks are the devil, but it is that or wine and I am still nowhere near a millionth of the men y’all are....Grin

prettybird · 13/04/2021 18:25

@JimmyJabs - I was c24 and a articulate and literate graduate trainee for ICI when I worked out that "misled" wasn't pronounced mizzled Blush

At 60, I still have to mentally correct myself when reading to myself Shock

Rshard · 13/04/2021 18:26

Have just had to have a camping wee while out at land training with dd. In a park that’s split by the river, loos are on the other side so legged it round and of course they’re closed.

Ah well.

Keeva2017 · 13/04/2021 18:27

Thanks! That is helpful, I just struggle with science I think. Sorry BIRI I have read the theory on here and google but couldn’t get my head around it! I am 10000% guilty of downing my water so il change that up to sipping regularly and hopefully that will help.

Iv been decorating today and couldn’t get through one sheet of wallpaper without running for a wee lol.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 13/04/2021 18:33

A lot of weeing here too.
Luckily the public toilets seem to open in the places I frequent.
I dud buy a shewee last summer but never got the hang of it...

MrsKoala · 13/04/2021 18:35

Yup, totally forgot about all the weeing. The insomnia will start soon for too. Still it’s better than being bloated and tired all the time from the carbs.

Bestbees · 13/04/2021 18:36

Forgive me @BIWI and Pam Choi. It appears I invited Cathy to lunch too. I ate cake, simnel cake, lovingly made by my mum who I havent seen for months. They first cake I have had all year! And a g&t. And a few crisps. I know it's not good. But I am OK with it, as this woe needs to allow for occasions like this. Back on it I promise. And we did walk 7k which might atone a tiny bit. May skip dinner as still full.

@nowlook theceleriac hassle backs were OK. I think they needed longer so would do more like an hour rather than the half suggested in the recipe. However the meal was brilliant. Delicious slaw with homemade mayo, loads of lovely roast turkey, purple sprouting brocoli roasted with chili, garlic and lemon. And best of all seeing family, and it being sunny so sitting out in the garden was a delight.

Well done t everyone who has done considerably better than me today, but also thanks for the amazing thread where I am willing to admit my misdemeanours and know I will be chivvied in the right direction. Smile

TheHoover · 13/04/2021 18:39

You can’t neck water? Gah.

BSky · 13/04/2021 18:42

Evening all,

My food for the day.
B: Coffee
L: Scrambled egg
D: Spinach & watercress soup. Leftover chicken, avocado, cheese & more watercress.
Water, water but not enough

I was pretty strict on the last Bootcamp although did have a couple of glasses of wine on weekends after the first few weeks. This last weekend I ate cake and had pastry, which I haven’t eaten since Christmas (also more wine than previously!) For the last two days I’ve felt really uncomfortable. I can’t work out if I’ve got some kind of stomach bug or if I’ve reacted in some way to the sugar/carbs? I just feel bloated and my stomach is tender. No one else in the house feels unwell and we’ve all eaten the same things. Anyone else had stomach pains after returning to carbs?

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 13/04/2021 18:43

@nowlook, please use purple sprouting for flagellating purposes, as it's in season.

@TeddingtonTrashbag I've been reliably informed that you need to practice in the bath to get the hang of a shewee.

I've had a good start this bootcamp. I feel all clean inside.

I started using electrolyte powder straight away this time, and my feet aren't getting tingly at night any more. Good news.

ChangingFi · 13/04/2021 18:44

Hi is there list of allowed veg can't seem to find this is it on a spreadsheet? Love green beans but guess they aren't a good choice

Chunkymonkey123 · 13/04/2021 18:44

@Bestbees your lunch sounds amazing! Glad you had a lovely time!
Is the homemade Mayo a specific recipe and is it worth the effort to do? I’d always assumed it was like making your own custard, too much hassle! 😂

Bestbees · 13/04/2021 18:49

@Chunkymonkey123 it's easy! One egg yolk in a bowl. Add tsp of djion mustard and pinch of salt. Whisk until well blended. Add half a cup of oil a few drops at a time whisking all the time. It eventually becomes mayo. Add a squeeze of lemon juice then whisk again. Taste and add salt/garlic powder/smoked paprika if you want. Does take a bit of work in the contuak whisking and I use a sauce whisk rather than balloon, but it's easy enough and you feel impressive. I freeze the egg whites and use to make chocolate mousse mousse when I have enough.

Jellycatspyjamas · 13/04/2021 18:52

Good day here:

B. Greek yoghurt with a sprinkle of cinnamon
L low carb sausages, scrambled egg and mushrooms in butter
D. Pasta sauce with chicken, tiny bit of bacon to use it up, tomatoes, onions and spinach wilted through. Pasta for the kids, broccoli for me

Lots of tea, sparkling water and boullion to drink

FusionChefGeoff · 13/04/2021 18:54

@ChangingFi absolutely yes there's a tab for Veg Carb counts and it's all colour coded. Green beans are ok I think!

@BrassicaBabe would you be so kind as to Scribble / link your guacamole recipe??

@MrsKoala I flipping love man get out and my mum will find it very funny too as my Dad is similarly clueless yet conscientious when it comes to shopping lists. He once famously came back with 1 apple in a bag in the huge weekly shop and when Mum looked quizzically at him he explained the list had said 8 apples and there were only 7 in the bag he picked up.

My dinner was flipping lovely. Been good on the water. I love herbal teas so regularly have huge pots of fresh lemon and ginger in the morning and then different herby blends (Yogi Teas mainly) in the afternoon / evening.
