Week 3 – Keep celebrating the scale and non-scale victories!

Hello Bootcampers and welcome to week 3. Thanks so much to PrettyBird for the previous threads – I hope I can live up to the high standards this week.

Hopefully this WOE (way of eating) is starting to feel easier for you, and you will have seen some good losses in weeks 1 & 2. The exciting thing about week three, is that for those who want to, we can tentatively move into Bootcamp Light.

The key changes are that you can add in some carbier vegetables in moderation, although it is best to stick to those that are 3g carbs per 100g or less for the majority of your vegetable intake. You can add some fruit in the form of berries in moderation, have nuts and seeds in moderation, and can have some alcohol – you guessed it – IN MODERATION. Vodka and soda, dry white wine, or red wine are the best choices. The rules for Bootcamp and Bootcamp Light, along with fruit, veg & nut carb counters are in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, kindly organised by SayrraT.

The good thing about Bootcamp Light is that it opens up your menu choices, and hopefully feels sustainable for a lot of people. However don’t be tempted to view this as a free for all – if you suddenly start eating loads of roasted butternut squash, followed by bowlfuls of berries all washed down with a bottle of Prosecco and packet of almonds, it will stall you.

Lots of people find that sticking to Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light for the weekend works well for them. Others find that they need to stick to Bootcamp in the main, either because their metabolisms can’t cope with the extra carbs (me) or because psychologically they are in the ‘abstainer’ camp (also me) rather than the ‘moderation’ camp. Just do whatever works for you.

Some people find they stall in Weeks 3 and 4, and the initial whooshes of weeks 1 and 2 can quickly become distant memories. Just KOKO (keep on keeping on), celebrate non-scale victories, drink plenty of water, and trust that this will work. Weight loss isn’t always linear, and there are loads of posters on here who have had amazing losses over the last year who are testament that this works in the long term.

So after what feels like an epic OP Grin, good luck on the scale and non-scale victories this week!

leapinlizards and anyone else who is worried about stalling... I stayed the same weight on week 3 and 4 (and two other weeks, can’t remember which ones) on the last bootcamp. Still lost 17lb overall! Keep on keeping on and you’ll get to where you want to be.

Another lb off for me this week. Need to decide what my goal is. I thought it would be 10 stone but I’m 2lbs away now and thinking I’d like to lose a bit more.

I think I’m going to try making more interesting food this week as I seem to be stuck in a rut. Might try pasta-less lasagne.

LeapinLizards · 22/01/2018 13:40

Thank you for the reassurance, princessbear. And it's helpful to know that I might stall again next week - forewarned is forearmed and all that.

Beryl, the chewing gum is because i love the fresh taste but also because it seems to help me deal with stress or concentration. Though, since I've discovered the carb content and ditched it, I've only really wanted it a couple of times so maybe it is habit as much as anything else.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 22/01/2018 13:43

BadlyParked you CAN do this! I am/was exactly the same, there is always something that gets in the way - until I change my mindset.

The other key (I am not there yet) is stopping thinking of these things as a "treat" - they are not, look what they do to us and how miserable we become.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 22/01/2018 13:47

Weirdly I've had lots of water and one creamy coffee so far today, and not feeling too bothered about foodConfused. Will have something soon...

Went to Hotel Chocolat earlier to choose some v good, dark choc for the occasional treat. Also got some 100% choc buttons for melting into cream and making a small, unctuous hot choc - am hoping it is not vile!

B: v late creamy coffee
L: may have a couple of cold sausages with some tapas-y bits
D: chicken, tomato, salami and mozzarella bake with either cauliflower or celeriac rice.

ScreamingValenta · 22/01/2018 13:47

Beryl Yes, long term trend (since last May) is downwards - I have lost nearly three stone. I hit this plateau in December - stayed for 3 weeks - put on 2lb due to Xmas cards which came off last week - now back at plateau weight again. I will KOKO but it's frustrating - it's as if my body doesn't want to go below this weight - but I am still 1.5 stone off target.

ScreamingValenta · 22/01/2018 13:48

2lb due to Xmas carbs, obviously, not Xmas cards! Xmas cards have been recycled Grin.

ilovecherries · 22/01/2018 13:51

0.5 pound down, which I'm pleased with given I've been doing this a long time AND I'm on holiday. That's made the 11s feel more secure.

LeapinLizards · 22/01/2018 13:57

screamingValenta i LOVE the idea of you putting on weight because you scoffed your Christmas cards Grin. Who knew paper was so carby?! Grin

ScreamingValenta · 22/01/2018 14:01

Grin Christmas card and cheese toasted sandwich, maybe *LeapinLizards'?

nekobus · 22/01/2018 14:04

Thank you prettybird and beryl! I'm all set for week 3! Well done in the losses everyone.

2.6 pound off so that's a total of 7 pounds in 2 weeks (was 8 at one point this week but I'm blaming the period which arrived as it always does when I go strict BC/keto), I am so pleased with that and I will continue BC through the week (been aiming for a dry-ish January anyway so not drinking on a school night) and BC light at weekends, maybe with a bit of flax seed, ground almonds and coconut flour for recipes but I'm steering clear of berries and any more carby veg as I am definitely an all or nothing eater / 'abstainer' Grin

SayrraT · 22/01/2018 14:24

Could the following people please let me know if they DO NOT want to be deleted from the spreadsheet.

The following names have not put in any weights at any point. You don't need to be on the spreadsheet to do BC but if you are not using it I'll delete your name. Only because it frees up some space.

1.7lbs on for me. It's my own fault, though, so I can't complain. And I did enjoy last night's dinner rather too much!

I need to get back on track. I was desperate for chocolate on Sat and, whilst I didn't give in it made things so difficult. I don't know why, I'm nowhere near due my period (and this woe hasn't caused trouble in that department up to now, so I doubt it's causing chaos now) and I only rarely get such cravings. It didn't help that I was full of the cold and just wanted chocolate. Ho hey!

My other issue is that I was having huge sleep issues last week, so I've taken to having a late-night drink of warm milk and nutmeg, which isn't helping the carb issue. Will definitely have to rethink that one.

prettybird · 22/01/2018 14:48

Lizard202 - I think it was nekobus who posted this link for low carb brownies (found the link by scrolling back and then the MN app closed after I clicked through to it)
http://www.uplateanyway.com/keto/chewy-fudge-brownies/

Jings - while I was scrolling back, I saw that you asked about chia seeds on Lite and not sure if I/anyone answered. They're fine. Iirc, chia seeds are also good for "setting" things like a sugarless strawberry "jam" (puréed strawberries set with chia seeds) or a chocolate mousse.

Itsjanuary · 22/01/2018 14:54

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/182606/chocolate-truffles

These look good - will try them this weekend with as high % chocolate as I dare

2lb for me this week - now eating more fat so expecting the whoosh everyone as talked about :-)

BerylStreep · 22/01/2018 14:57

BadlyParkedRangeRover – the thing is, there are always going to be events or weekends away. I think you need to try to work out how you can make this work for you – even when there are things on. Have you any ideas on how you can adapt this to fit in with everything you have going on?

Lizard – how are those brownies going to help you? What about throwing them in the bin? Or would you rather be the human bin? Can you at least move them out of sight, or give them to someone else?

Twitches stick.

Off to read rest of thread after school run.

Beryl It's going to need to be a JFDI. I could've with planning low carbed this weekend, it would have needed some bloody willpower. I seem to be short on that are the moment. All it would have needed was a low carb option while travelling ( I've done that before, olive and cheese tapas from the little waitrose) and being selective with the takeaway (and all the bloody booze!)
DD birthday party on the weekend - I'm buying nibbles, and she loves cheese, so sorted.
3 day conference next week: more difficult. The supplied lunch will be carby. I'm wondering if I can bring myself to pick sandwich fillings out Blush
But there's always these excuses, and probably always will be. JFDI!!!

JingsMahBucket · 22/01/2018 15:15

I just entered my weight. I hasn't changed from last week in theory but I know it went up and down last week while I was ill and while I was caring for OH being ill. Reset today.

JingsMahBucket · 22/01/2018 15:17

@prettybird thanks for answering the chia question! I figured they were but I wasn't sure how much in the seed category they were. I do need some extra fiber in my diet. Heck, I know I probably have a couple pounds hiding in my colon right now as I have the dreaded keto constipation. (TMI, sorry. :) )

Twoo · 22/01/2018 15:27

Phew found you all!

Thank you Pretty’ & SayrrT for being our guiding lights the past two weeks. You’ve been very supportive as has the whole thread!

Hello Beryl’, I can feel your twitchy stick from here.

Please forgive me for I have sinned. I’ve been on holiday for a long weekend and had a few carbs but pleased to say no alcohol. I braved the scales this morning to find I’ve remained at 10st 13lbs which I’m pleased about considering my naughty naughtiness.

That thread on veggie low carb stuff is awesome. Thank you BIWI.

B - 2 scrambled egg, cheese & butter

L - Brocolli & Stilton Soup.

D - King Prawns, Brocolli, buttered leeks.

S - 2 x Coffee with Cream

2 1/2 - 3 ltrs water.

Twoo · 22/01/2018 15:28

Could someone be kind and I put my weight please? I don’t trust myself to muck up the spreadsheet.

Mimosa1 · 22/01/2018 15:45

Gail that lunch looks amazing!

Did anyone answer the PP's question about whether teas and coffees counted for the water intake? fingers crossed as I'm struggling to get enough cold drink down me in this weathee

Separately, I've re-discovered mustard powder. I hadn't seen any for ages! I find it's really good to put a pinch in cream to jazz it up a bit for a sauce.

prettybird · 22/01/2018 15:55

I think either StuntNun or BIWI answered it saying that up to 2 mugs of (ordinary) tea/coffee could count towards the total.

Herb teas count fully! Smile

prettybird · 22/01/2018 16:01

Mimosa - I add half a teaspoon of mustard powder to the Parmesan/ground almonds/flaxseed mixture that I use instead of a breadcrumbs mix to make low carb chicken nuggets. Smile

BerylStreep · 22/01/2018 16:06

BadlyParkedRangeRover Can you contact the conference venue directly? I've always found them to be very accommodating. Personally I find it easier to explain that I am gluten intolerant (which I am) and then ask for a chicken salad. I also always bring my own buttermint teabags with me so I can avoid the revolting tea & coffee at break time.

Glad the brownie temptation has been averted. Phew.

ScreamingValetta 3 stone is amazing. Well done!

prettybird · 22/01/2018 17:11

I misremembered my start weight, so I'm actually 3.5lb down on my Boot Camp start weight (1.5lb down on last week).

ScreamingValenta - I've lost just over 3 stone since I started in May (plateaued a bit in August was getting a little bit complacent Blush) but am usually a steady 1-2lb off a week. I too have another 1.5 stone to go to target (20lb by 16 May). That will take me comfortably into a normal BMI, although still at the top end. I'll then review and see if I want to go any further before going on to Maintenance.
