Week 3 – Keep celebrating the scale and non-scale victories!

Hello Bootcampers and welcome to week 3. Thanks so much to PrettyBird for the previous threads – I hope I can live up to the high standards this week.

Hopefully this WOE (way of eating) is starting to feel easier for you, and you will have seen some good losses in weeks 1 & 2. The exciting thing about week three, is that for those who want to, we can tentatively move into Bootcamp Light.

The key changes are that you can add in some carbier vegetables in moderation, although it is best to stick to those that are 3g carbs per 100g or less for the majority of your vegetable intake. You can add some fruit in the form of berries in moderation, have nuts and seeds in moderation, and can have some alcohol – you guessed it – IN MODERATION. Vodka and soda, dry white wine, or red wine are the best choices. The rules for Bootcamp and Bootcamp Light, along with fruit, veg & nut carb counters are in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, kindly organised by SayrraT.

The good thing about Bootcamp Light is that it opens up your menu choices, and hopefully feels sustainable for a lot of people. However don’t be tempted to view this as a free for all – if you suddenly start eating loads of roasted butternut squash, followed by bowlfuls of berries all washed down with a bottle of Prosecco and packet of almonds, it will stall you.

Lots of people find that sticking to Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light for the weekend works well for them. Others find that they need to stick to Bootcamp in the main, either because their metabolisms can’t cope with the extra carbs (me) or because psychologically they are in the ‘abstainer’ camp (also me) rather than the ‘moderation’ camp. Just do whatever works for you.

Some people find they stall in Weeks 3 and 4, and the initial whooshes of weeks 1 and 2 can quickly become distant memories. Just KOKO (keep on keeping on), celebrate non-scale victories, drink plenty of water, and trust that this will work. Weight loss isn’t always linear, and there are loads of posters on here who have had amazing losses over the last year who are testament that this works in the long term.

So after what feels like an epic OP Grin, good luck on the scale and non-scale victories this week!

So we can get the Big Stick out on you BIWI! Wink

BlackMozart · 24/01/2018 21:10

whoknows sending sympathies to you too. I have got used to either doing what scabbersley suggests and just eating the same food minus the carbs, or cooking 4 different meals. My DH will eat what I eat but doesn’t want to then add carbs as we know where that leads! My DS (now with mended teeth so much happier) eats when he comes in from work at 5 and then again later when he comes in from the gym; and my youngest DD who is autistic eats when she comes in from school at around 5 too. It’s madness but somehow it works. I try now to eat by 6/630pm as it is helping my digestion too.

Also I noticed tonight that diet doctor has a recipe and video for making Keto bread which might be worth watching. It’s lower in carbs than the others mentioned I think. I am not a member but I get the regular emails and it was on one of those.

ASD that is extraordinary - well done you.

On another note I have bought The Sugar free Family Cookbook by Sarah Flower and although it has no pictures it looks very good.

bendyruler · 24/01/2018 21:14

BIWI thankyou for the veggie recipe threads some nice looking recipes on there that look quite easy. I'm just making a shopping list for tomorrow and It's been really helpful.

BlackMozart · 24/01/2018 21:17

I also ate really well today:
B fried celeriac cake mixed with some butter and cheese with a few spinach leaves and two fried eggs; coffee
L chicken and chorizo fried with a spring onion and then served on an half avocado/leaves salad with a bit of mayo
D lamb loin with a little aubergine, shallot, garlic, brussels, and a dab of mayo.
Plenty of water, no choc, no nuts, no wine and only 1 slice of Gouda as a snack and I didn’t really need that tbh.

BerylStreep · 24/01/2018 21:18

BlackMozart how is your DS?

BIWI · 24/01/2018 21:19

Oh yes, @prettybird!

BlackMozart · 24/01/2018 21:24

beryl he is doing well now thanks. Getting his teeth fixed has helped a lot..

Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 24/01/2018 22:19

Thank you, you've all been very kind. Headoutofthesand - I would be in heaven with six meals that we'd all eat, we only have three (meatballs, pizza and enchiladas) and until fairly recently it was only two. My other problem is time in the evenings, I am in and out for half hour blocks all evening from about 3.30 on most weeknights (ferrying DCs around and going to my own classes), which makes cooking and eating tricky. Still, I am feeling a bit more positive now.

Trippingoverunicornsandlego · 24/01/2018 22:25

Hi all, hope you are all doing well and no more accidents or injuries!

I made a delicious and (hopefully?) keto snack tonight - my curry recipe was for skinless chicken thighs but I had skin on ones so was left with half a dozen bits of chicken skin. I've seen crispy skins on masterchef so did a bit of googling!

After a bit of salt and pepper I baked them in the oven between two lined baking trays for about 20 minutes then put them on kitchen paper to cool - they were YUM!!! Just like keto crisps, properly crunchy and salty! I managed not to quite devour the lot so I'm hoping they'll stay crispy overnight Smile.

I haven't been logging meals so far as its hard to find the time, but I think it will be useful as I'm not always sure I'm eating the right things - so here goes for today:

B 2 creamy coffees
L tuna and egg mayo salad with avocado
D Homemade butter chicken with cauli rice and ginger cabbage
Drinks - not enough water today - I've been doing better in general but a must try harder for today!

Also 1 x tea with milk and 2 x redbush teas without.

I've done 16:8 fast twice this week but ended up eating late tonight after pilates and cooking dinner - definitely need to do a make ahead meal next week! Hoping for a bit more of a loss by Saturday (I may put some back on Saturday night with a few glasses of red wine for DP's birthday!)

Interested to hear how you get on with the sugar free cookbook BlackMozart - I love any excuse for a new recipe book!

RaindropsAndSparkles · 24/01/2018 22:37

Have thpught of your ds a lot blackmozart (did you ever have wings btw?). Hope you are all ok.

I am trying to be very good and haven't been very bad.

BlackMozart · 24/01/2018 22:48

raindrops that’s very kind. Am being very thick but don’t understand the reference to wings sorry!

headoutofthesand · 24/01/2018 22:49

I've just made celeriac boulangere. Hmmm. I'm not sure it will be a success. It seemed to take forever to prepare & cook so I had a massive bowl of mushrooms fried in garlic in the meantime & am now just looking at the celeriac!

headoutofthesand · 24/01/2018 22:52

WhoKnows I did laugh looking at your list of three dishes as DS would' tolerate any of those and DD would only eat the pizza and possibly the meatballs.

Our acceptable meals are:

  • roast - ideally chicken but beef is acceptable & lamb and pork tolerated
  • toad in the hole
  • cottage pie
  • pasta bake
  • sausage and mash (which isn't really that different to toad in the hole) provided it is covered in gravy & tomato ketchup
  • spaghetti bolognase
Twoo · 24/01/2018 22:54

Hi ASD’ you have done fantastic! What app are those graphics from. I love a bit of graphic Grin

RaindropsAndSparkles · 24/01/2018 22:55

Then I'm mixing you up blackMozart. Apologies, I once met a Mnetter called BlackSwan.

BlackMozart · 24/01/2018 22:58

That must be it 🙂

Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 25/01/2018 05:15

Head - out of your list DS would only eat pasta bake and spag bol. DH doesn't like pasta bake and DD doesn't like spag bol .

blackteaplease · 25/01/2018 05:29

Ah the dc and food. It's the bane of my life. There is literally not one meal that all 3 of them like all of. One doesn't like mixed together food, one doesn't like roasts or jacket potatoes and the littles doesn't like pasta. All I hope is that they have fussy kids when they are grown up!
Anyway, back to bc. My gain seems to have ceased and that has improved my mood considerably.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 25/01/2018 06:27

Morning, all - so sorry, has been hectic week and no time to read thread, so hope all are well!

Still eating my boring old same old 'roast meat & greens', but no further losses this week. Am feeling very different though. More muscularly efficient, if that makes sense - standing straighter, and moving with more of a swagger. Lounging like a casual lion on the sofa, rather than slumping like a timid dormouse. Hope that feeling lasts.

SayrraT · 25/01/2018 07:31

athelstane I love the thought of you lounging like a lion Grin

DrStringzDulcimer · 25/01/2018 07:51

I think CasualLion might have to be my next name change Grin

Rshard · 25/01/2018 07:54

Great explanation athelstane!

ASDismynormality · 25/01/2018 08:20

blackMozart. Really pleased to hear your son is recovering well.

twoo it’s an app called weight diary, it works best of you weigh daily.

twinkledag · 25/01/2018 08:28

Posting my menu before I got back and read the full thread -

Pancetta omelette
Ham salad
Tandoori chicken and green veg
Handful of nuts

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness · 25/01/2018 08:30

A couple of NSVs to report:

I caught site of myself accidentally in a shop mirror, and, for the first time in years, didn’t immediately turn away in horror at the featureless fatness. I was bearable to look at!

Before getting into the shower this morning I stretched upwards and my skin curved inwards underneath my rib cage, rather than staying full with its own fatness.
