Week 3 – Keep celebrating the scale and non-scale victories!

Hello Bootcampers and welcome to week 3. Thanks so much to PrettyBird for the previous threads – I hope I can live up to the high standards this week.

Hopefully this WOE (way of eating) is starting to feel easier for you, and you will have seen some good losses in weeks 1 & 2. The exciting thing about week three, is that for those who want to, we can tentatively move into Bootcamp Light.

The key changes are that you can add in some carbier vegetables in moderation, although it is best to stick to those that are 3g carbs per 100g or less for the majority of your vegetable intake. You can add some fruit in the form of berries in moderation, have nuts and seeds in moderation, and can have some alcohol – you guessed it – IN MODERATION. Vodka and soda, dry white wine, or red wine are the best choices. The rules for Bootcamp and Bootcamp Light, along with fruit, veg & nut carb counters are in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, kindly organised by SayrraT.

The good thing about Bootcamp Light is that it opens up your menu choices, and hopefully feels sustainable for a lot of people. However don’t be tempted to view this as a free for all – if you suddenly start eating loads of roasted butternut squash, followed by bowlfuls of berries all washed down with a bottle of Prosecco and packet of almonds, it will stall you.

Lots of people find that sticking to Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light for the weekend works well for them. Others find that they need to stick to Bootcamp in the main, either because their metabolisms can’t cope with the extra carbs (me) or because psychologically they are in the ‘abstainer’ camp (also me) rather than the ‘moderation’ camp. Just do whatever works for you.

Some people find they stall in Weeks 3 and 4, and the initial whooshes of weeks 1 and 2 can quickly become distant memories. Just KOKO (keep on keeping on), celebrate non-scale victories, drink plenty of water, and trust that this will work. Weight loss isn’t always linear, and there are loads of posters on here who have had amazing losses over the last year who are testament that this works in the long term.

So after what feels like an epic OP Grin, good luck on the scale and non-scale victories this week!

@AveAtqueVale for NSVs mine will be to have the confidence to wear a nice blouse tucked into highwaisted trousers. I love that look for work- Holly Willoughby wears that sort of thing a lot - and i'd like to have the confidence to tuck a top in instead of wearing long tops trying to hide my tummy.

Also my nice navy coat has been a bit too snug around the shoulders, so i'd like to wear that again

SoMuchToBits · 23/01/2018 21:30

Thanks for the thread, Beryl! I've stayed the same again this week but am feeling very well, and sure I will start losing again at some point.

Sayrra, you can delete me from the spreadsheet if you like. I wasn't on it last Bootcamp, and have been using the threads more to chat to other people about low carb rather than record my weight particularly.

I started a new job on 8th January, as a trainee healthcare assistant at my local hospital. The first couple of weeks were training days, and I'm now working on the ward (under supervision to begin with). It has all been very interesting so far. There were 15 of us on the training days, and we had talks etc from several different people about different subjects. Two things which kept being mentioned though - the fact that "patients are getting bigger these days" and the huge rise in the incidence of type 2 diabetes.

And then you look at what is offered on hospital menus/in the hospital canteen and see how carb based it is (and I think that reflects what is available in many workplaces/cafes). I was shocked that the breakfast menu for inpatients is fruit juice, cereals (cornflakes, porridge, Weetabix) and toast/bread with butter and jam/marmalade/honey/marmite, plus tea or coffee. Very high carb.

And I noticed nearly all my fellow trainees ate carby snacks in the coffee breaks (biscuits/chocolate/crisps, not even fruit which at least would have had some fibre and vitamins with the sugar). It's just so normal to snack on high carb food that no-one seems to worry about it. I think they all thought I was a bit weird bringing my tubs of salads in for lunch every day. It made me realise though, that I have absolutely no desire to eat carby snacks any more.

Mini goals:

  • get under 11 stone
  • get to 10.2 stone as it used to be my comfy weight
  • get under 10 stone

Ultimate goal:

  • get to 9.7 stone. Lowest weight since I was in my early teens, now 28
littleladylawyer · 23/01/2018 21:57

Love reading everyone's mini goals. Work blouse tucked into high waisted trousers/skirt is such a lovely style, I'm hoping if I avoid any carby twattery and really work on toning my waist I'll be able to get there.

Had a great dinner of brisket, mushrooms, tender stem broc and baby sweet corns.

Birthday and various outings and celebration meals over the rest of the week- I've planned the meals I can and the restaurants have good lc options. Booze is going to be the biggest hurdle I think, need to enjoy mindfully to avoid any lapses of judgement!

BerylStreep · 23/01/2018 22:01

SoMuchToBits my Mum who is type 1 diabetic was in hospital a couple of years ago. I was appalled at the food they were giving her. Pure carb from start to finish (and horrible as well). I ended up bringing dinner to her every night. I'd cook a lc dinner, wait for DH to arrive in then drive to hospital each night with her tea just so I could be sure she was eating properly.

I was fortunate that the ward staff didn't mind.

I really like the idea of mini goals. Mine are

Hit 146 lb (65 kg) - when I went back to work after last mat leave
Then 141 lb (63 kg) - when I fell pregnant with Dc2
Then 135 lb (60kg)
I toy with the idea of trying to drop to 128lb (57kg) - wedding weight but 60 kg will make me happy if I’m building muscle and staying in shape and working out

BlackMozart · 23/01/2018 22:23

Did someone say butter wasn’t dairy? It’s made from cream though so it must be...or maybe I’m going mad.
I’m trying to cut down on creamy sauces as I am finding them too rich but using butter on veg and on the look out for a good Hollandaise sauce or else I’ll have to make my own.
Am going to look at the new veggie recipes because I’m finding all the meat a bit much. I had salmon tonight though with mashed celeriac and spinach with some lemon mayo. That was nice. Out for lunch today so had one slice Gouda before I went (I find it helps with portion control) and for lunch a kale Caesar salad with chicken but minus Parmesan croutons. I finally drank enough water today. 😇
So sorry to hear about the funeral prettybird and well done for getting into your suit.
Nice to read the NSV’s here. I have a wardrobe full of nice clothes from when I did VLCD in 2012 that I can’t wear at the moment including my favourite bright pink ‘leather’ jacket which I love. The day I can get that back on will be the best day but that is a long way off somewhere over the horizon ☹️

TheWayOfTheWorld · 23/01/2018 22:38

Gosh, a lot to catch up on , apologies in advance if I miss anyone out.

Beryl sorry to hear about your husband, hope he is at least on the mend now. Flowers

ilovecherries that is seriously impressive weight and inch loss! Star

prettybird hope the funeral is ok Flowers
Someone asked about goals. I've got a couple, both weight and NSV:

Weight:

  1. get to 139.8lb and into 9 stone territory for nearly the first time in two years. I'm 146.6 now and would really like to get there by the end of Bootcamp (if not before Wink)
  2. get to 135lb: because it is the mid 130s
  3. not really though beyond that, haven't been below 135lb in a looong time. In fact, now that I'm older, it may not suit me so shall have to see.

NSV

  1. as per Sarurday's post, do the button up on my white ski trousers

  2. be able to wear my pencil skirt with top tucked in again (without my stomach sticking right out)

  3. there are a couple of dresses I would like to fit into comfortably

Definitely getting into it now - second day in a row I haven't felt like breakfast.

lisbapalea · 23/01/2018 22:44

Just checking in to log food:

B - mackerel salad (last night's dinner that I didn't eat!)
L- ham, egg and cheese salad with raw broccoli and cauliflower. Not convinced how LC the work salad dressings are so I need to remember to have my own
D - aubergine / mozzarella bake. Usually make with tomato sauce but this time the sauce was a leftover aubergine mozzarella bake from the freezer, all whizzed up! Sounds odd, but means there was less tomato sauce than usual. Was delicious and really satisfying.

Alwaysinmyheart · 23/01/2018 22:50

I made the chocolate cookies I mentioned upthread and I’ve just tried one. They’re nice but a bit dry. Still, will be nice with a cuppa or some cream. Personally I find making little treats like this helps keep me going on this WOE otherwise I can get a bit bored. I don’t generally eat many cakes or biscuits so I know I won’t over indulge, my biggest weakness is wine!

prettybird · 23/01/2018 23:21

AveAtqueVale - I do have specific clothes that I want to get back into. Specifically, I have a lovely black velvet Nicole Farhi dress that is cut on the bias and only buttoned down to the thigh (but so beautifully cut, not too much is ever exposed). Last time I wore it was nearly 5 years ago (think that was the first time I did Boot Camp really seriously Wink) - I worked hard to get back into it (there is a clue in the picture that I only just managed to achieve it Wink it buttons all the way up ) and the previous time about 8 years before that! Shock

Like Alwaysinmyheart - my main objective is to get back in to all the lovely clothes I still own and never got rid of Blush The only things that fitted when I was at my fattest last summer were a pair of jeans, one pair of shorts (and even they were tight around my thighs) and the outfit I bought for the wedding in May (when I spent a depressing afternoon in the local shopping centre and ended up with a pair of size 18 white trousers and an asymmetric coral top from Wallis Sad) which motivated me to get my head together and focussed on Boot Camp.

The before and after shot is from May and early November (those who were on the last Boot Camp will already have seen them).

Week 3 – Keep celebrating the scale and non-scale victories!

Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 23/01/2018 23:30

I don't have any old clothes I want to fit into, partly because I am good at decluttering but mainly because I've been a size 16 for about 20 years. I am looking forward to buying some smaller sizes though, also to chucking out some of the 16s - I worry that I might hang onto them "just in case" and then put all the weight back on.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 23/01/2018 23:36

@FriedFishFacial from the hot counter? I was caught out by those last week. They look like they will be fine but I was definitely out of keto the next day. Very annoying.

My ultimate goal is 10stone. Mini goal is 12.4 which will be a stone since the start of bootcamp and back into my non stretchy size 12 trousers.

Might need a mid point too- probably 12.7.

I have a beautiful Ted Baker dress in a size 1. (8 I think) which I accidentally bought in tk max as it had the wrong label. I would love to get into it by my friends wedding in May.

prettybird · 23/01/2018 23:39

BlackMozart - for Boot Camp purposes, butter doesn't count as dairy as it is essentially pure fat and very low in lactose.

Of course, if you are allergic to dairy products, that is a whole different equation.

YoLoHogwomanay · 24/01/2018 01:19

always i love that graphic. what vegetable is an Oliver though?

Twoo · 24/01/2018 06:22

You look great in the photos Pretty’ Pink definatley suits you!

I’ve seen people mention ‘the next day I was out fof keto’. How do you know? Thanks in advance.

So much to learn.

Mini Goals

Currently in the ‘10’s’

10st 7 - Half way to the 9’s

9st 13 - not been in the 9s for such a long time.

9st 7 - Half way to 8’s

8st 13 - Not been in the 8s since I got married nearly 20 years ago.

8st 7 - Final goal around this weight.

Any less than that might not suit me as I’m an older lady now.

I was 7st 7 when I met dh. Not underweight (d cup) as I’m petite framed and under 5 ft. Most definatley not aiming for the 7’s though.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 24/01/2018 06:31

Mini goals here too:

At my present rate 8lb by the end of bootcamp, down from 182-174 (12st,6lb).

Then I'd like to break 12st by Easter, fir a wedding on 6th April.

I'd be very happy to get to about 11st2lb which by July and to stick there. That would see my BMI in the normal range.

Despite slow progress, am feeling fabulous. So well and healthy - mire and mire convinced I must be intolerant to something I have cut out be it wheat or yeast!

BIWI · 24/01/2018 06:59

Can I just point out that you don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight? So please stop stressing about it! As long as you're keeping your carbs low-ish, and you're losing weight, that's all that matters.

LeapinLizards · 24/01/2018 07:24

Sorry to read about your family friend and your mum (these losses stay with us), pretty Flowers. But my goodness i LOVE that dress you're wearing in the pic you posted - it's gorgeous! An excellent goal for fitting back into it.

My mini-goals are:
get to 9stone (for 1 March when i have a reunion with old friends)

get to 8'13 (because that's in the 8s)

get to 8'10 (for a wedding)

I'm at 9st 4 at the moment so not far off the first goal but I've stalled. Apart from my initial wonderful whoosh, I'm expecting it to be a very slow loss from here on in.

I had a dream last night where I drank lots of wine and immediately put on ALL the weight I'd lost and i was so annoyed at myself. I was so relieved to wake up and realise it wasn't true. Grin

SayrraT · 24/01/2018 07:39

I seem to have some magic double cream. OH bought it from the cheap aisle and it was BBE 10th January, I opened it on the 9th I think. I just used it in my coffee, its fine Confused

pretty that black dress is gorgeous!

Almahart · 24/01/2018 07:46

Sorry to be posting and running. Will catch up on messages later. Have undone damage from Friday now. Yesterday’s food was leftover cauliflower egg rice for breakfast, grilled halloumi and salad for lunch and Parmesan fried chicken and mashed celeriac for dinner. Tons of water but one Diet Coke

Almahart · 24/01/2018 07:59

Okay have just caught up. LOVE the mini goals. What a great idea.

I want to lose half a stone this BC and then I will be done!

I am going to say that I will be 3ib down before a big party in mid February I think. Perhaps that’s too unambitious .

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness · 24/01/2018 08:02

Loving everyone’s mini goals. Mine are:

15’4 as that’s the point I move from obese to merely overweight
14’3 as then I am under 200lbs
13’7 as that is a stone above normal (and I am built on a very broad frame with big boobs, and instinctively I always feel I shift BMI categories (in terms of how healthy and comfortable I feel) about a stone above the actual boundaries.

I’d like to get to that point by my birthday in April.

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness · 24/01/2018 08:02

Am 4lbs away from my first mini goal.
