Can somebody add me to the list - haven't got the hang of copy and paste. Thanks

readyforno2 · 11/05/2016 22:00

Wombat
Do you use the app? If you want pm me the email address you use and I'll add you. You can do daily/weekly/weekend competitions, it's great motivation

Statelychangers · 11/05/2016 22:16

Have added myself, hope that's ok. I have been low carbing for 4 weeks now - only lost 2lbs - which is ok because my focus is on health gains rather than weight loss, I'll need to stick to this for at least 6 months to heal properly.

Welcome everyone! Lots of us this time, which is great to see.

However, be prepared for the first couple of week's threads to move really quickly. I'll start a questions thread as well as a chat thread, to make sure that people get all of their questions answered.

OP posts:
BIWI · 11/05/2016 22:21

Interestingly, I was taken out for lunch today (am working in New York), and we were booked into a Mexican restaurant - my heart sank as it's generally Carb City at that kind of place. But my main dish, pan-fried chicken, came with coconut cauliflower rice! So much easier to stick to LC when you're catered for.

OP posts:
stilllovingmysleep · 11/05/2016 23:11

BIWI New York City!!!!Envy

Question for anyone who knows. Maybe very basic question. Why in lc is eating lots of fat important? (Rather than high protein)?

Equiem89 · 11/05/2016 23:19

Higher protein diets are ideal for reducing body because they improve satiety, reduce hunger, and preserve lean body mass when losing weight.

However, if you go overboard and eat too much protein than the body needs, some of the amino acids in the protein will be turned into glucose via a process called gluconeogenesis. This will reduce the body’s ability to burn fat and may hinder fat loss, particularly if your goal is ketosis

That was copied from main.poliquingroup.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles/Article/1143/Eight_Common_but_Dangerous_Mistakes_of_A_High-Fat_.aspx

stilllovingmysleep · 11/05/2016 23:22

So what kind of things should I be eating for extra fat? I'm running out of ideas.
Cheese?
Oil / Mayo etc with salad
Olives?
Nuts?
What else? Really stuck with this

Equiem89 · 11/05/2016 23:25

We aren't allowed nuts to start with on bootcamp.
Some people find dairy hinders weight loss, personally I don't. So I eat cheese, cream, olive oil, butter, fatty bacon, chicken thighs with skin, chicken wings, nice big ribeye steaks with fat on them, pork scratchings, pork belly. Lots of lovely yummy food

stilllovingmysleep · 11/05/2016 23:28

The problem I have is that I hate all fat on meat Confused. Bacon I don't like but I can accept adding some fried pancetta to eggs. Other ideas? Maybe tuna mayo / prawn Mayo / chicken mayo etc with lettuce wraps?
I think I'm ok with cheese too.

stilllovingmysleep · 11/05/2016 23:30

I also hate skin on chicken...

By the way, good that we are not allowed nuts on boot camp as I find that I always overdo it on nuts. However aren't they a source of good quality fat?

Equiem89 · 11/05/2016 23:37

This may sound strange but do you hate fat on food because it's been drilled into you that fat is bad and should be avoided at all costs.
I know someone who hated fat, but once she started eating LCHF she started to introduce fat into her diet and now eats thighs, wings etc

BIWI · 12/05/2016 04:10

Nuts are allowed, but not till after the first two weeks of Bootcamp.

I can understand that you don't like visible fat on meat - but what about higher fat content meats/fish? So instead of buying lean mince, buy a higher fat content mince. (The flavour is all in the fat!). Stewing steak rather than braising steak. Chicken thighs rather than chicken breast, etc.

And don't forget butter! Butter on your veg is lovely - and you can fry in it too.

It's really important that you get fat - it's good for you and it keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

OP posts:
stilllovingmysleep · 12/05/2016 06:42

Equiem when I was young I had a babysitter who I remember detested fat (was probably very fussy) and drilled it in us that 'it's disgusting'. Since then I simply can't eat things like skin on chicken or fish / visible fat on any meat etc.

What BIWI says makes sense: higher fat meat is probably the way to go.

And what about fish? What's best to choose for higher fat content?

Abracadabra12 · 12/05/2016 08:08

Hello - I'm in. Doing it for the first time and feeling a bit apprehensive. Thanks for organising, BIWI!

BursarsFrogs - thanks for the link to the Diet Doctor site. Looks interesting.

Biwi - not sure if you saw the DietDoctor link. Looks interesting as I said. He has info about lower carb veg. His general rule of thumb is veg grown above ground tend to be lower and below ground is higher. He reckons celeriac is higher. Grin. Celeriac wars!

regularbutpanickingabit · 12/05/2016 12:30

Yes please! An opportune time to have spotted this post considering I was just asked when my baby is due. I am not pregnant.

I have only gone lc once and that was for 8 months and revolutionised my life. 8 years and another child later and i am 4 stone heavier, addicted to sugar and miserable. I think this might be the way to break that cycle again. Thank you!

Florene · 12/05/2016 12:44

Looking for some suggestions for a substitute for bread/toast please, as am vegetarian and really not keen on eating eggs without bread.

I have tried with veg such as field mushrooms, avocado etc. but still didn't enjoy much, I'm really looking for something 'drier' and harder than veg as the eggs are soft - I need the contrast to enjoy them.

I really haven't come up with any alternatives myself, so any suggestions for a base for my poached/scrambled eggs would be gratefully received!

Deadnettle · 12/05/2016 14:13

I have a question.

Yesterday I found out I need surgery (not a suprise as I suspected I would need it) and the provisional day for it is in 5 1/2 weeks! I didn't think it would be so soon.

Am I still ok to do bootcamp before the surgery? I really need to lose weight and was really looking forward to doing the whole of bootcamp, not sure I can now especially after the op.

WanHeda · 12/05/2016 14:24

I started 2 weeks ago today, and I am down 10lbs already :)

lexloofah · 12/05/2016 14:31

nettle of course you can do before, and after if you are still going to be able to prepare your own meals unless a special diet is required for recovery. you will at least get to do half of BC and hopefully lose weight before your OP, hefzi was on the last BC and had an op part way through

florene, sorry no, perhaps in time you will learn to live without dry/crunch to go with your eggs the same way you will lose your sweet tooth. I like eggs lots of ways, perhaps a soft boiled one mashed with butter with steamed asparagus to dip in? Or an omelette, not crunchy I know but a different way to try them. Some people make cloud bread/oopsie rolls but I don't care for them really and can't be bothered but you might want to give them a try and plonk your eggs on top?

WanHeda · 12/05/2016 14:40

BIWI that was a very interesting post on exercise and weightloss, until you get to the end Grin
the best strategies are weighing yourself weekly, watching your portion size, staying away from high-fat foods, restricting your calorie intake, and exercising regularly.

At least we are wise enough to ignore that bit!
