Time for the new thread ...

Am on iPad and have no time to link to the Spreadsheet, but please talk here! Will do links later (unless some kind soul could do them for me)

Locarbill & antimatter I totally feel your pain. Glad that talking on here is helping you a bit. We really do all get it. Thanks

Hugs to Spamm & Hissy whether they're allowed on Mumsnet or not!

Thanks so much to Ewan, Pisses, Birdinacage & LowcarbFTW for your advice about my weight gain. I've been away sulking for a bit. I have been using MFP to carefully track everything & try and identify the issue. Yesterday was 1954 calories & 8g carbs, Thurs was 1503 cal & 7g carbs, so it's not carb creep or too many cals I don't think. Have cut back on flax dairy a bit too, but not completely. Anyway... today I'm down 5lbs Shock on yesterday - doing nothing different than the last few weeks. No discernible reason at all I switched from putting on 1 or 2lb a day to whooshing down. I'm putting it down to a deranged metabolism (love that phrase) and this is just how it's going to be for me on low carb. Even if it continues to takes me a month to lose each pound, it's better than not losing it, and there are all the other benefits. [determined face]

antimatter · 14/06/2014 14:55

TolchockLovelyInTheLitso - I think if you are experiencing that can you tell me how many calories are from protein?
'cause it then gets converted into glucose.... Sad

TolchockLovelyInTheLitso · 14/06/2014 15:02

Um, I'm not sure how to get to calories from protein Anti but it was 78g protein on Thurs, 122g on Fri. Will have more of a fiddle with MFP, see if I can work it out.

antimatter · 14/06/2014 15:07

well - is not as simple as "converting protein into glucose" - so I recall this statement

in this interesting article caloriesproper.com/?p=4022

I read this and it makes perfect sense!

====================
Why must protein remain in the lower end of the spectrum for ketosis? Dietary protein and/or amino acids are necessary and essential for survival fatty acids. And insulin generally helps to prevent a head-on collision.

Dietary protein-derived amino acids have a purpose, and that purpose is not carbs.

TolchockLovelyInTheLitso · 14/06/2014 15:09

Aha, apparently 1g of protein = 4 calories, so Thursday was 312 calories from protein, Friday was 488.

antimatter · 14/06/2014 15:09

you can change settings to see % of energy derived from each group:

www.myfitnesspal.com/account/change_goals_custom

TolchockLovelyInTheLitso · 14/06/2014 15:13

Thanks Anti. So you think that's too much protein?

antimatter · 14/06/2014 15:16

but if there's enough energy coming from protein your liver won't be requesting fat storage for energy - that is the case if you have too much calories from

I just checked - if I put 2000 cal as my daily limit and 20% of that to come from proteins then you just need 75 g of proteins - Thursday was spot on
I would claim your weight loss is due to that on Thursday you forced fat out of your cells! Grin

yesterday - too much (you may show you pot weight on tomorrow)

antimatter · 14/06/2014 15:22

*daily limit of % of calories coming from protein assuming I chosen 20% coming from protein

TolchockLovelyInTheLitso · 14/06/2014 15:23

Bah. Will keep it down in future. Thanks for helping me identify the problem Anti. It really does seem like a solution, and one I can live with.

If anyone else needs help figuring out their personal macronutrient balance, this calculator is very easy to use

lowcarbforthewin · 14/06/2014 15:36

Tolchock my reading came out I should be having 60g protein a day max.

I can't go to my party Sad really gutted. I'm just too ill. Feeling very sorry for myself. Plus a friend gave birth this morning. Cue massive wailing from me. Very tempted to binge again, am not going to do so. Telling myself very firmly that will feel great for 5 minutes and then horrendous for 3 days and I don't want to feel any worse than this. I have wanted to binge more this week than I have in months. It has been tough. But I am hoping that each time I want to and don't, long term I will be reducing the urges.

I am trying to think of something nice to buy myself to cheer myself up. Really can't think of anything right now. You can't buy good health and babies on amazon or eBay right?

StuntNun · 14/06/2014 16:38

Tolchock other people on this WOE have had success with cutting protein. I reckon 5-10% carbs, 20% protein, 70-75% fat is a good macro ratio to aim for but in can be difficult getting a lot of fat without protein. Olive oil in salad dressings and bulletproof coffee are good ways to up your fat.

TolchockLovelyInTheLitso · 14/06/2014 16:52

Poor you, lowcarb.

Massage or facial any good? Even a new app for your phone to distract you?

HolgerDanske · 14/06/2014 17:37

Lowcarbforthewin (this time I do mean you, heh), flowers and hugs for you. Well done for sticking with it and beating the cravings this week. I'm sorry you can't go to your party :-(

Scousadelic · 14/06/2014 17:38

Many condolences to spamm and family

lowcarb sorry you are feeling so low. What about a nice cream or something? I love Steamcream, it smells lavendery (in a good way, not an old lady way) and is multipurpose so you can use it on face and body then relax in the lovely scent. You can even use a bit on your hair if it goes frizzy. I always take a tub on holiday so even the smell of it makes me feel relaxed

oolaroola · 14/06/2014 17:48

Thanks for the crisp substitute ideas, I'll try em.
Having the courgette spag for tea.

What ratio of carbs/fat/protein are we aiming for?

Have just put my days food in to Mfp and it's reading 11% carb 62% fat and 27% protein.

Sorry you're feelin rough lowcarb hope it passes soon...

oolaroola · 14/06/2014 17:51

Oh and is there an average amount of time it takes to get to ketosis?
Not noticing the pear drops yet, it's been 36 hours or so..

Scousadelic · 14/06/2014 17:56

oola we get some things from Home Bargains that are pork but not hard like the rindy bits of scratchings, they taste the same but are more of a "puffed" texture, they're a bit like big, square, porky wotsits

StuntNun · 14/06/2014 18:49

DH is making butter chicken and he has bought nan bread to go with it. He seriously expects me to eat it! Shock And there's no vegetables in the recipe so I'm going to have a plate of chicken for dinner. Seriously considering going out for dinner.

lowcarbforthewin · 14/06/2014 19:56

Thanks guys
I hsve ended up eating something I shouldn't. But it wasn't a big binge, I had a try of something my lodger cooked and it was mainly something with fat in it anyway. I'm sure I will be disappointed tomorrow but still proud I didn't go out and buy lots of chocolate. To be honest I have felt so ill today I just have to pat myself on the back for getting through the day. Tomorrow is a new day. Considering how few cheats I've had over the last few weeks I still feel I am doing well.

oolaroola · 14/06/2014 20:09

I've just seen the questions thread, sorry if I've been clogging up the thread.

miffy49 · 14/06/2014 21:20

Lots of interesting info here today! Just tried the keto calculator and it confirms my suspicions that I need to keep a better grip on my protein.

Stuntnun when I do a curry I do a big pan of steamed cabbage and then I melt a dollop of butter with some garam masala and stir it through to make it all spicy and buttery. Hubby still has his naan bread but that doesn't bother me as gluten free naan is manky! The cabbage mops up the sauce nicely.Smile

JimmyCorkhill · 14/06/2014 21:37

lowcarb well done on not using the lodger food as an excuse to binge.

Put my slow cooker food in too late. Won't be ready till 11pm. I'm an idiot Grin

Next week will be planned to the mouthful!

antimatter · 14/06/2014 23:02

great link TolchockLovelyInTheLitso - thanks!

lowcarbforthewin - I am sorry you can't go to the party Sad

lowcarbforthewin · 15/06/2014 07:49

Ok so some good news. I weighed myself. I now weigh 153 pounds. 2-3 weeks ago I was 155. Given how the scales eternally stick I think that is absolutely great news. Yes, I would have loved to get on those scales and be lower, but any scale loss has to be celebrated, in my book. I am now 10 stone 13. I have been stuck around or just over 11 stones for so long I can't tell you; probably since November. I had actually started to believe that my body couldn't go lower.

Given that I cheated yesterday it is possible my loss is bigger and the numbers have just gone up a little overnight too .

Part of the reason I weighed myself is I want to reintroduce a little dairy this week, so I want to be able to weigh myself in a week to see what effect that has. I don't want to eat too much, I just think a week of not being so restricted would be good, and I would rather enjoy some cheese than end up falling into chocolate or a binge.

Going to buy some feta and some Boursin and enjoy every bite. I might buy a bit of cream too. It's so confusing; when I eat cream I get brilliant appetite suppression, but I seem to stop losing weight. Don't eat it and I struggle getting fat in my diet and am a bit more hungry but lose weight. But maybe eating cream I do still lose weight but it just doesn't show on the scales. Rarr. More tweaking to do. I wish I knew definitively if dairy was stalling me or not.
