Heard the first 5 minutes of that Amy Chua's Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother on Radio 4. It was actually quite funny.(Not sure all of it is going to be funny though ...)

sfxmum · 07/02/2011 10:08

copper did you get to the bit when the younger child refuses to obey and goes out in the cold? seems like normal toddler to me but somehow different meanings were given

dustythedolphin · 07/02/2011 10:15

Kew hope your Mum is Ok ands its not cancer returning. Give her our love, it must be a big worry for you all

UptoapointLordCopper · 07/02/2011 10:21

sfx - I read about that. It does seem to be normal behaviour, but perhaps not so normal in an abnormal home. I can understand what her concerns are (were?) but there are other ways of doing things. Can't imagine how law professors can be so unintelligent. But did you hear earlier programme (Andrew Marr) about willful blindness? That was interesting too.

UptoapointLordCopper · 07/02/2011 10:21

Now must really go to meeting!!!

sfxmum · 07/02/2011 10:28

yes copper previous programme was very good, loved the Mayan thing, always reminds me of Eco's Foucault's pendulum Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 08/02/2011 13:07

Foggy morning but all sunshine now!

tillyfernackerpants · 08/02/2011 13:09

Yep, v nice to see some sunshine, will prob put wellies on ds's & send them out into the garden after school!

vbus, nice to see you & ds2 earlier Smile

sfxmum · 08/02/2011 13:18

I really enjoyed going round the bridges today lovely sunny day
and spending a lot of birthday voucher money on Amazon pure indulgence

vbus · 08/02/2011 13:28

It is a lovely day, a glimpse of Spring Smile

Tilly - nice to see you both earlier Smile

Think we'll be heading to playground after school then friends can come back for tea

Kewcumber · 08/02/2011 20:49

Have had a very sad day today, my lovely cat died last night unexpectedly - no illness, obvious injury. Have (slightly reluctantly) decided not to tell DS, he is rather insecure at the moment following my mums stay in hospital and am just not sure I'm up to explaining to him how its possible that a young and apparently healthy cat dies wihtout warning. He is not especially close to the cat as she was very nervous of loud noises and tended to give him a widish berth (though she could always be relied on to join in with teh bedtime stories for some reason). Have decided to wait for a few days and suggest that she has wandered off (like my mums cat does regularly) and is probably being looked after by another family.

Feel really uneasy about this approach but just can't deal with seeing him trying to process the cats death. Is that very cowardly of me?

UptoapointLordCopper · 08/02/2011 22:04

Kew - don't know what approach is right. Sad I would worry though about what happens if he finds out by accident ...

sfx - did you notice the bit in the start the week programme about how the Vienna philharmonic doesn't recruit Asians? I wonder if it's true. Shock Shock (Addled brain takes this long to register this information. Blush)

Must go to bed now. >

sfxmum · 09/02/2011 09:59

KewC I am sorry how awful, regarding DS I sort of feel pets are an intro to the loss of humans iyswim it is inevitable that he will have to deal with it sooner or later but only you can judge, and I suppose taking your own feelings into account

last night dd told me she was thinking about what she was and what she would rather be, I asked what she meant, she said she rather be something that doesn't die when old she then said not an oven or a kettle because she does not like being too hot, maybe a wardrobe and burst out laughing

copper I heard that along with the behind the screen auditions
not heard morning radio since then but not because of it obviously

must study must study must study

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/02/2011 12:02

Nice and sunny here. But I have a headache since waking up. Don't know why that is. Only had a glass of wine last night. Can it be that!?

LOL at being a wardrobe. Make sure it's not an Argos one. They seem to have bits dropping off here and there now and then. Hmm

Also remembered another bit from that programme - about how the Big Society is not going to work. Why doesn't Dave or Nick volunteer for something? That's what I'd like to know.

sfxmum · 09/02/2011 12:36

yes copper that bit stuck and the reasons given were sharp short and rational ouch

I am really resenting this indoors studying business, best get it over with and go for a sunny jog

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/02/2011 12:46

For some reason a Boden catalogue came through the door. I actually quite fancy some of the tops and skirts. Shock Is that bad!?

vbus · 09/02/2011 13:02

hello

Kew - sorry to hear your sad news Sad If you think timing not great to tell DS now, your approach is not cowardly. Maybe when things settle and your mum is better you can explain why cat is no longer with you.

Copper - I like Boden and their stuff always looks great in catalogue. I've never bought anything from them though!

been to Little fishes with friend this morning. First I've been in ages and it was great, DS2 seemed to really enjoy it.

sfxmum · 09/02/2011 13:47

so much for runningHmm never mind I did go Mon&tue

anyway Copper I like their summer skirts and some of the knits but mostly their children clothes because they last and are colourful

dh says he will be home late as he will be arrested for murder, guess not having a good dayGrin

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/02/2011 14:12

Waiting for piano tuner.

Going to attempt polenta cookies this afternoon. Maybe parmesan biscuits too.

Boden stuff looks good. But DO NOT read Q&A with models. Argghhh.

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/02/2011 14:12

Might just have to boycott them on the strenght of those inane questions and answers.

vbus · 09/02/2011 14:45

Q&A with models Shock

Sfx - LOL at your DH. why no running today? Good effort on previous 2days though!

sfxmum · 09/02/2011 15:06

copper Q&A is just nonsense and to be ignored

vbus just timing with study and pick up time, dd has extra class today but the towpath gets heats heavy school traffic, best avoided
managed some home dvd Pilates and stretches

on the plus side I have finished the reading for essay due next Wednesday

UptoapointLordCopper · 09/02/2011 17:46

Am avidly watching local news for sensational murder:

"But he was always so mild-mannered!"

"They say his wife goes on this funny online forum thing, what-do-you-call-it, Mumsnet or something."

"Yeah, you never know with these modern couples."

etc.

tillyfernackerpants · 09/02/2011 18:11

Copper, what's happened???

Kew, sorry to hear about your cat. I guess you can only do what you feel is right, perhaps when everything has settled down a bit you can tell him then. Hope your mum's ok.

Sfx, well done on studying. I'm steaming ahead with my current essay for a change, helps when its an interesting topic!
