My 15 year old step daughter was with me today. My son was at a summer activity camp at his school. As I was leaving the house to collect him l, my step daughter told me her mum was due to pick her up in about 15 minutes. That was about how long I would be picking my son up so I asked her to wait for me to return home before leaving so our house wasn’t left empty and unlocked before I arrived home. Her mum came to pick her up a couple of minutes before I returned and refused to wait for to get back, screamed at my step daughter to get in the car and drove off leaving my house unlocked and empty. Is there anything I can do to fight her actions?

Make her wait outside next time.

Get your DH to ask her why she wouldn't wait?

Lock the door on the way out and leave her to wait outside for her mother.

I’d pick my battles and leave it. What’s done is done. Just know that it doesn’t work for next time.

Actually I'd just get 15 year old a key
Or alternatively if she doesn't have one, give her the spare one to lock up and tell her to put it through the letterbox after

Its possible the mum didn't have the time to wait. You can't expect others to do what you want without checking with them first.

or tell her to pull the door closed, if it is self locking, or lock it and put key through letter box. Nothing happened. We went away for a week recently and accidently left back door unlocked. Luckily nothing happened. When I was a child, we had two back doors, but one was had unfinished steps up to it and was never used. We once opened it to do some painting around the frame, and forgot to lock it. No one realised for several YEARS. Nothing happened

This is totally on you! She should have a key, but if she didn’t you could have given her one to lock up and post it back through the letterbox! You can’t expect someone to hang around for you!

She said she would wait for me, so I left the house unlocked. Then her mum wouldn’t let her wait

So in this situation like I say I'd give her the spare key to put through the letterbox

what is unhelpful about what has been said? Nothing happened this time. Normally nothing happens. Lots of suggestions for you for next time.

I would have but she said she would wait for me, it was her mum who caused the problem not my step daughter she was totally put in the middle.
