Is 37 too late to have a 3rd child

With a DH that is 42?

Previous two in early 30s but feel I'm pushing my luck.

The combo of me above 35 and DH above 40 seems to scare me but my heart tells me to go for it while my head tells my heart to be quiet!

Could you elaborate?

Im going through a mc at the moment of what would have been dc3 - I’m 37 and will try again. I guess mcs are more likely at this age but I still wasn’t expecting it! My others are 3 and 6.

So sorry for your loss,

I had my DS at 39. We always planned three children. Love having a third child and he is such a joy. DDs now grown up so it’s lovely to still have one DC at home.

How old were your other two?

giftofthegab · 01/08/2024 19:19

@pollypocketss they were 4 and 7.

I had my first at 38.

I had my 4th at 40 (we started ttc just as I turned 38) and my 5th at 41.
I had my 1st at 21, second and third at 30 and 31.

I don’t feel tireder than I did at 21, and my 4th pregnancy (only boy) was a breeze.

We're you worried about any health implications to the baby being an 'older mother'

Thanks @pollypocketss. Coming to the end of the physical bit now and looking forward to trying again! 💪🏻

Have you made up your mind yet?

Fingers crossed for you!!!!

How old is your DH?

I think I must suffer from anxiety, our ages just scare me a little but when others such as yourself want to go for it I feel like they will be fine.

I guess I worry about the impact of my current to and how I'll manage 3 while working (can go PT) and no family support around.

What are your plans if you don't mind me asking?

I’m never sure what people want from these threads? Obviously you could reasonably have 3rd child at 37. Obviously some people will tell you they wouldn’t. So what?

DH is 37 this weekend (a few months younger than me).

We have no family support either. I am a high earner and DH is not, but is self employed. So we manage atm with a combo of a nanny 3 days, DH doing 2 days plus taking over from the nanny at 5.30. My work starts lateish (9.30) so I can always do the school run in the mornings, and I’m usually home by 7. Kids go to bed at 8 so I can do their bedtime routine with DH.

I feel it’s a good balance. DC2 is starting preschool at DC1’s school in sept so life is getting easier and it does feel like a slightly mad decision but I’ve always always wanted 3 kids.

I had my third at 46. Go for it! Lots of my friends hadn’t had their first by your age

I forgot to respond to your PM, OP. I was 37 and my husband 48. We are certainly tired, 10 years later, but we've never regretted it for a second.

LucyEleanorModeratz · 06/04/2025 14:24

How are you getting on, OP? Asking myself the same question right now (am currently 35, though would look to start TTC later this clear when I'll be almost 36). Finding it a hugely difficult decision. Basically MN says 'no' but the heart wants what it wants!

williteverstopraining2024 · 15/07/2025 22:57

Did anyone change their mind? 🤣 my little ones moving into year 1 and 3 and it’s making me really really sad now

CurlewKate · 16/07/2025 06:05

Wasn’t too late for me to have my first!

CeciliaMars · 16/07/2025 06:44

First at 36, second at 38, 3rd at 42. Adore them all. Do it!
