This attack was sickeningly inevitable. The writing has been on the wall since 7.10, when protests immediately sprung up, in support of Palestine. It’s like watching a train crash in slow motion. The rhetoric and comments I’ve seen on X have become increasingly overtly antisemitic over the last few months, some big names writing increasingly unhinged stuff, and then that Heil Hitler י״ש song…
When I left England nearly three years ago; one of the last pushes to leave was that horrific incident where amidst pro Palestinian protests, some people drove in convoy with Palestinian flags on their cars through London with megaphones shouting fuck the Jews, fuck their mothers, rape their daughters (the charges were dropped, although I believe it was caught on camera). It was just before Shavuot 2021 and I was living in Manchester, and people came specially to our quiet Jewish suburb to ‘protest’ and smashed up cars, and went into a local Jewish shop, acting aggressive and intimidating. The Jewish communities everywhere know the cycle of antisemitism; the never ending need for constant vigilance, constant security. As frightening as 2021 was, I still never ever ever thought I’d see the overt unchecked hatred and mainstream acceptance I’m seeing now. How is a Heil Hitler song acceptable anywhere? It’s heartbreaking to see.
