August BFPs after IVF

Morning everyone, inspired by similar threads on this board, I wondered if anyone wanted to join me in the anxious wait from a BFP after IVF to first scans.

I had an FET on 22 July and have my first scan on 20 August. I hate this time of waiting for a scan and find it worse than the initial two week wait!

I’ll join you! I had my FET on the 12th July so just a little ahead of you at 7+1. I’ve already had a very early scan at 5+3 to make sure it’s in the right place after previous ectopics and have another tomorrow to hopefully, fingers and toes crossed, hear a heartbeat. Lots of scanxiety! Have you got any symptoms?

kirstysmbc · 12/08/2024 20:28

Hi @Like2Smile congrats on your pregnancy! Sorry to hear about your previous ectopics but good that you've had an early scan and all was looking good.

I've not had any symptoms really other than odd twinges of tender boobs. I'm only 5w5d and don't think I had anything this early with my first pregnancy either.

I completely get the scanxiety, my first pregnancy ended with a missed miscarriage and I've been a mess for every scan ever since. Good luck tomorrow 🤞

This is the hardest wait by far! @kirstysmbc want to get excited but can't relax at all not knowing if baby is there/growing/in the right place etc. I would say I have been more tired than usual and have gone off sweet stuff but other than that & sore boobs I don't really have any obvious symptoms. I know you shouldn't wish for morning sickness but I feel like it would make me feel more reassured!

hope all went well with your scan today @Like2Smile

Toon49 · 13/08/2024 15:30

I had a fresh transfer 23rd July really anxiously waiting for my scan on 23rd August and agree this wait is awful! Never ever had a positive test before and my first round of IVF never got to transfer. Getting odd cramps now not much, initially had horrendous bloating and gas from the pessaries but this seems to have settled now just feeling really tired tired but managing okay and works keeping me busy!

Mfiwife · 13/08/2024 17:18

It's such a hard wait isn't it @Toon49 this is my first successful trf too, last ended in bfn. Really trying to stay busy and not overthink symptoms etc. but easier said than done!

Like2Smile · 13/08/2024 18:44

Congratulations to you too @kirstysmbc, @Mfiwife and @Toon49 - glad to be sharing this with you! Scan went well, strong heartbeat and measuring exactly as it should. This was my third transfer so hoping it is third time lucky 🍀. Had 2 natural ectopics and with IVF the first was a chemical and second was a BFN so this is the first time I’ve been this pregnant. From about 4 weeks I’ve been really tired, sore boobs, cramps, and going to the bathroom a lot. From about 6 the nausea started but it comes and goes. I have a friend who’s now 4 months and had no symptoms at all! When I feel nauseous I feel miserable but when I don’t I get worried - no winning! I’ve had massive cravings for sweet things which is the opposite of what I’m normally like. The OH is not very happy that I’m eating all his stashes of unhealthy food 😅

Faith2024 · 13/08/2024 21:32

Hi all! I had my transfer on 22nd July, medicated frozen transfer. I had morning sickness right about now with first child but all I feel is tiredness and increased peeing. To be honest I dont miss it as it was relentless until 14 weeks. I know increased peeing is hcg rising so I should feel good but also I havnt tested since day 12. I am on steroids which I read suppress morning sickness. Is this true?

I am keeping the hope alive for another week, my scan is 19th on Monday.

Mfiwife · 13/08/2024 22:15

So glad your scan went well @Like2Smile you must feel so relieved! Must have been amazing to see the heartbeat 🥹 I think I may have had slight nausea today but I can’t tell if I’m making it up! Just felt like aftershave etc. was really strong in the office. I’m meant to be having gel nails & toes this week but suddenly thought should I even be having them/are there chemicals in them. Has anyone else had them done since bfp?

kirstysmbc · 13/08/2024 22:27

Welcome and congrats @Mfiwife @Toon49 @Faith2024!

@Like2Smile congrats on the successful scan, will you now be discharged from your clinic? I've got a sweet tooth anyway, so sweet cravings are a constant for me!

No symptoms for me either, but I didn't have many with my first either. @Faith2024 I'm also on steroids but not heard anything about suppressing morning sickness, that's interesting.

@Mfiwife No idea about the gel nails done, maybe ask the salon? I've had my nails done in pregnancy but not with gel.

@Like2Smile congratulations, you must be so relieved . Wishing you a smooth and healthy pregnancy from this point onwards.

@Mfiwife morning sickness istarts slowly for some or they are the lucky ones that don’t get it. Also hcg starts to increase significantly at around 6 weeks so may still be just on the cusp.

@kirstysmbc yes I wasn’t imagining it, steroids are described as powerful anti-sickness meds, especially Prednisolone which is what they use during pregnancy for things like severe morning sickness like HG. I wasn’t keen on steroids but I am absolutely loving the prospect of zero morning sickness. Also my all year dust allergy gone overnight (well I know it’s there but immune syatem is suppressed). At least for all the potential side affects it is doing something for me. First time I had 8 weeks of nonstop all day morning sickness, it was rough rough time.

Mfiwife · 14/08/2024 09:16

Thanks @Faith2024 that makes me feel better! I do feel like it may be starting to creep in! I think I might ask the clinic about nails. I just want to do everything I can to give baby the best chance of being ok in these early days!

Faith2024 · 14/08/2024 10:15

@Mfiwife the only thing is inhaling all those chemicals while you sit at delicate time for embryo development.

kirstysmbc · 14/08/2024 10:20

@Mfiwife This came up on a pregnancy app today - can't link it, so here's a screenshot

Hi all! Have found my way onto this thread.

Congratulations to everyone on their BFPs. I had my transfer on 22nd July. I am having major scanxeity. Just really hoping it's growing in the right place and developing strongly. I've got one booked for Sunday 18th so just apprehensively waiting for that.
I've got sore boobs, a bit of nausea and a crazy urge to pee all the time. I'm also getting quite sharp cramps in small bursts on my right side and I've just started spotting this evening. So I am really worried. Has anyone else experienced this? Really trying not to stress myself out.

Like2Smile · 16/08/2024 09:27

Thanks everyone, very relieved about the first scan 😊

@EvaA17 it’s a really anxious time and everything feels weird! Cramps are normal - I’ve been getting loads of them, sometimes enough to keep me awake at night. But they’re not painful, more like very light period cramps or back pain. I haven’t had spotting but if you’re on cyclogest I know it can sometimes happen with those? If you’re really worried I would call your GP or 111. Others might have different experiences but for me there’s always been a lot of pain with the ectopics - once I bled a lot and the other time not at all. It also lasted more than a couple of days. Not sure if that’s helpful

kirstysmbc · 16/08/2024 12:21

@EvaA17 Welcome! I've had some cramping as well, and my symptoms have been a bit like yours too. I had a tiny little bit of brown spotting about a week ago, but nothing since. I know it can be quite common and doesn't necessarily mean there's an issue, but it is always worrying. Could it be irritation from progesterone pessaries? Has it calmed down now?

@Like2Smile Have you now registered with your local midwife team?

OP posts:
Like2Smile · 16/08/2024 12:51

Hi @kirstysmbc yes I did, even before I had the scan as I knew it would take a while to get an appt. The IVF clinic has also discharged me. This is through the NHS and I had to pay for my last order of meds which was a surprise as it’s usually covered. I’m also under the recurrent miscarriage clinic so have reassurance scans booked every 2 weeks, next one is 21st - am sure I will feel reassured after but also feeling a bit of anxiety and hoping everything is still ok!

EvaA17 · 16/08/2024 16:03

Thanks for your messages and reassurances @Like2Smile and @kirstysmbc
I ended up calling 111 and they made me go to my local UTC and it was such a waste of time. The doctor there was just so dismissive and rude. Anyway, they didn't scan me there or do any checks, so I ended up calling the clinic I was due to have my scan with on Sunday and arranged one for today instead.
We saw the little baby with its little heart fluttering away 🥹🥹 felt so surreal and very emotional. I'm just grateful everything is okay for now, and that it's not anything sinister. Baby is measuring 6 weeks and I'm currently 6 weeks 2 days, so I think it's all on track. I have my next scan on 30th Aug so hopefully will see some growth as il be 8 weeks by then, hopefully.

I do think the pessaries cause me all sorts of discomfort especially the cramping so really hoping I can come off them after 12 weeks. The spotting seems to have calmed so let's see how it goes. I am just extremely exhausted today - think the waiting around for almost 5 hours last night has something to do with that.

Faith2024 · 17/08/2024 22:06

@EvaA17 that’s great news you must be so relieved. The hospital experience sounds terrible and glad your clinic could helped you out.

My scan is on Monday and I can’t wait, so close now. After reading and convincing myself that my meds will mean no morning sickness I have actually had all day nausea last two days and my sense of smell has multiplied by a 1000 (no more hanging washing for a while). It’s still not as bad as my first pregnancy but definitely uncomfortable. At least I hope it’s good news things are progressing, fingers crossed.

Becky105 · 18/08/2024 07:13

@EvaA17 you're symptoms sound similar to mine... I waited all day for NHS 111 to call me back, from 2pm until 10:30pm to be told someone else would call in 2 hours. Had that call at 5am and they have advised to go to my local A&E. Headed there now to rule out ectopic (I had a few sharp pains on my right side). Gp that I spoke to said it is more likely a miscarriage because the bleed changed colour.

It's weird I'm still hopeful. I am still crampy but it feels a bit like a constipation type cramp. Yesterday I drank some lemon and ginger teas and it revealed I had lots of gas... So I don't really know what to think. I am really hoping for some answers. The bleed was Friday eve and my test this morning was still really strong.

mlruirod · 18/08/2024 16:31

Hi everyone, I'd like to join the group. I had my FET on 31st August and my first scan is scheduled for the 27th August so it seems I'm behind you all but I'm finding the wait horrible so I thought hearing some of your stories at least will help and give me hope.

I haven't had any symptoms apart from a lot of cramps that come and go. I was worried because they are all on my left side but because they don't get any worse, I'm hoping they are normal. It's good to hear your experience @EvaA17 as it makes me feel more relaxed that probably my cramps are normal.

Good luck to those of you having scans un the next few days @kirstysmbc @Mfiwife @Toon49 @Faith2024 and congratulations @Like2Smile and @EvaA17 I really wish you a healthy pregnancy and that everything will continue going well for you and your babies!

@Like2Smile I'm also doing IVF through NHS- what do you mean they made you pay for your last order of meds? Did you need them after they discharged you? I thought we have to take them until around 12 weeks pregnant and would be covered? That's really shocking, I wasn't expecting to have to pay for any of the meds😮‍💨 Should I ask for another order of meds before being discharged?

Becky105 · 18/08/2024 20:48

At my A&E visit, they took my bloods, hcg was 1500 so the dr was happy enough with that. He didn't really seem too worried. He felt that my bleed was spotting (I thought it was quite a lot for spotting). He said that cramping and bleeding in early pregnancy is really normal. I burst into tears. It was just such a different opinion from the gp who called me in the morning and told me to go to A&E... He was wishing me luck on trying to get pregnant again.

I asked about ectopic because I'd had a couple of sharp pains, he said with ectopic it would be getting worse not have gone away. But he did say the EPU is available for walk ins Mon-Fri so said I can go tomorrow if I want to.

I think I do want to, I know that at 5 weeks and 5 days we won't see a lot... But at least I'd know it's not ectopic. So I can dispel one fear.

Has anyone else had a scan around this time? Is there any risk to the baby having an internal scan?

EvaA17 · 18/08/2024 21:22

@Becky105 ahhh I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Has the bleeding come back at all or the cramps? I think those numbers are good so I'm hopeful for you that it's not a miscarriage. I'd try not to focus on what the GP said and go get checked out at the EPU tomorrow first thing. TBH some private clinics I have looked at say they do the early viability scans from 5 weeks onwards and it's mostly internal scans anyway, so hopefully they can still see something when you have your scan. When is the scan at your clinic?

I had a speck of fresh blood yesterday and then some brown discharge again yesterday morning, which then stopped by the afternoon. I think that was from the aggravation from the internal scan the day before. I woke up this morning convinced I had a miscarriage already, as I didn't wake up with sore boobs or the nausea feeling. But that slowly started to come through again in the afternoon along with extreme fatigue. Honestly the whole IVF process is just so emotionally, mentally and physically taxing. The waits in between every stage and every scan now, the look out for symptoms etc and the uncertainty really does take its toll. We are all superhuman for going through all of this and still remaining strong and brave. I really pray all of us here who have had our BFPs go onto have our healthy babies in our arms in 8 months time xx

kirstysmbc · 18/08/2024 22:14

@Like2Smile that seems really harsh that you have to pay for your meds now given it was NHS treatment. I thought they would cover as long as it was needed... Do you have your booking in appt in the diary yet? It's good that you get the extra scans, although obviously not a great reason why you need them. I have my first scan through my EPU due to past losses, so not sure if I'll get the same.

@EvaA17 Glad all is well and that you had a successful scan. It's so lovely to have seen that little heart beating! I had something similar to you today, woke up and my symptoms had gone and I was convinced it was all over, then they came back during the day. Previous losses really mess with your head!

@Faith2024 Good luck tomorrow, I'll be thinking of you! I've also had quite a bit of nausea over the last few days despite being on prednisolone. The only thing that stops it is eating, so if it carries on I'm going to be the size of a house!

@Becky105 Glad the A&E team were a bit more supportive and i hope all goes well tomorrow if you do go to the EPU. The cramping stopping definitely sounds like a good sign.

@mlruirod Welcome! I haven't had many symptoms either other than sore boobs and the nausea which only kicked in a couple of days ago. Hopefully the time until your scan passes quickly
