Trying to conceive baby#2 following ivf treatment for #1

I thought I would start this thread as I can't see anything similar. We underwent many rounds of icsi and following a couple of bfns, and an ectopic pregnancy we were finally blessed with our beautiful daughter last year.

We recently started thinking about baby no 2 and had 4 frozen embryos of which 2 had been tested and found to be chromosomally normal so are meant to have a better chance. We didnt have the other 2 tested.

A couple of weeks back we had our first fet with one of the tested embryos and got a bfp super early at 4dp5dt. Sadly by 8dpt the line was barely visible and resulted in a chemical pregnancy. I've been feeling really down about it as this was meant to be a super duper embryo with no genetic problems which they said was the main reason embryos fail.

I thought it would be easier trying for #2 and of course it is in a way as I realise how lucky I am to have had a baby but I can feel the infertility fog starting to descend again as I realise although I've had a brief respite I will never be like my fertile friends and I do really want another baby and a sibling for my little girl.

Im feeling a bit negative at the moment. We will probably go back for the other tested embryo in the near future but I can't see how I would ever get lucky enough to get 2 bfps in a row. These things just don't happen to me so just not too hopeful about it at all. We said that if we used all of our frosties with no success we would be happy with what we have but already I am thinking should I do more fresh cycles. I will be 39 soon though so time isn't on my side for that.

Anyway just wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation and would like to share the journey. Please come and say hi.

Congratulations Snow! Such lovely news. I hope you're recovering well, and that DS takes to his little sister quickly.

I hope the next few weeks pass quickly for you both Jen and Chocolate

Jenbot78 · 18/02/2019 19:04

Lovely news snow bet you are thrilled! As for me, the bleeding and spotting carried on all through last week. By Friday night I was beside myself with worry and so booked an early scan (clinic one not till 7+4) for Sunday. I woke up on Sunday to more blood and was feeling devastated as just felt it must be all over. Went for the scan and cried to the sonographer to just get it over with and confirm the worst and low and behold was a gestational sac, a little blob and a tiny heartbeat! Was gobsmacked! Turns out I have something called a Subchorionic Hematoma which is like a small bleed somewhere in my uterus. Supposedly very common although I have scared myself googling it! Still as anxious as ever, but at least reassured about the spotting. Hope you are doing ok chocolate xx

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 19/02/2019 03:05

So pleased for you Jen, it must have been so reassuring to see at the scan. My friend had a subchorionic hematoma too, it made for a very stressful early pregnancy as you well know. I hope the spotting stops soon.

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 19/02/2019 08:24

@Jenbot78 what a relief! I've known a few people have that, it's so worrying but fingers crossed all goes smoothly from here 🤞 yay for a little heartbeat

@Chocolateandwineplease27 how are you getting on?

@GenghisKahnSchmitz have you tested yet?

@snowdayfet Congratulations! Hope you are recovering from the section ok and hope DS is adjusting to his new little sister x

As for me I'm starting in about 4 weeks. Am doing a standard FET so no down regging. I've not done one before so not sure what meds I will be on. Am waiting for my protocol to arrive

Chocolateandwineplease27 · 19/02/2019 08:25

That's fantastic news jen - what a relief! The bleeding is so terrifying but v glad it's all OK. Fingers crossed it eases off so you can relax a bit (obviously "relax" is all relative but you know what I mean!!)

How are you getting on genghis?? Xx

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 22/02/2019 10:16

I hope things are still going well Chocolate and Jen?

It's nice to get the ball rolling Cupcakes, hopefully the weeks go by quickly.

Still waiting over here...it's all I seem to do! I had my appointments with the biologist and my consultant. Now I just need to meet the anesthetist and get approval from our Insurance. But all going to plan, I should be able to start with my next AF.

This is totally theoretical obviously but when I was talking to the biologist she said that they ideally like to do 5dt but if things aren't developing quite as they hoped they'll transfer two embryos at 3 days unless the patient only wants one transferred. Did any of you transfer more than one embryo? We obviously also talked about the odds and all that but just curious..

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 23/02/2019 06:33

Hi @GenghisKahnSchmitz I've had 2 embryos put back on my first ivf. It was a day 3 transfer and there were only 2 viable embryos so they recommended putting both back. I did get a BFP but had an early miscarriage at 6 weeks. I have only had single transfers since as on 2 occasions I only had one embryo left at transfer and on my recent transfers the embryos have been good quality blastocysts at day 5 so my consultant will only do single transfers in those situations. If I was having a day 3 transfer I would put 2 back

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 23/02/2019 06:35

Oh and I should hopefully be starting in around 3 weeks. I got my endometrial biopsy results back and they are fine. Just waiting for my protocol now 👍

Chocolateandwineplease27 · 25/02/2019 10:00

genghis the waiting is so frustrating - feels like always counting down to something. Fingers crossed your insurance is sorted quickly though and it's go go go. We've never transferred more than one due to circumstances (first round pre my son I only had one embryo, second round - lots of embryo so transfered the "best" one and then tested the rest) BUT I think I'd be tempted to do 2 if at that point it seemed like the right choice. I'd rather that then potentially waste embryos if they might not be OK to freeze.

Cupcakes great news about your biopsy. I can't remember - are you starting a fresh or frozen cycle? I always think once you start (particularly fresh) it goes really quickly (until the tww wait obviously....!)

How are you getting on jen? Any more bleeding? Are you having another scan soon?

Afm, we had our scan on Fri - it was moved forward as I'd had more spotting and been feeling really unwell so kind of wanted to know what was going on/crack out the hard core cold/flu remedies if the pregnancy wasn't viable. Scan was good - I was 6 plus 3 and measuring spot on with a good hb. He couldn't see any reason for the bleeding and placenta looked fine so he's optimistic but cautious. I was really shell shocked! Really thought it was going to be bad news.

snowdayfet · 25/02/2019 15:37

Massive congrats jen and chocolate! That first scan is just SUCH a relief x

Hope the waiting doesn’t drag too much genghis and cupcakes. Fingers crossed for both of you.

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 25/02/2019 20:16

@Chocolateandwineplease27 that is fantastic news, am so happy for you!

Jenbot78 · 25/02/2019 21:15

Great news chocolate are you feeling more relaxed now? I had a scan today at the clinic at 7+4, baby measuring on track and heartbeat strong so all good. Feeling more relaxed today although no doubt I’ll move into nervous wreck territory again soon. The clinic me that as this is a FET I stop luteal support at week 10. In the cycle with my daughter (fresh IVF) I went all the way through to week 12. Anyone else have experience of this or thoughts to offer? Kind of nervous about stopping.

Also the clinic say I don’t need to do the final recommended intralipid. We have had three in total, ons before the transfer, one after and one after positive test. Any intralipid girls got a view on this? Glad the biopsy went well cupcakes

Chocolateandwineplease27 · 26/02/2019 06:40

Thanks ladies. Really want to get to 12 or even 10 weeks - hoping I'll feel more relaxed....!!

jen re luteal support I think from 8 weeks the placenta has formed so you're OK to wean off - Im pretty sure I came off around 10 weeks last time.

Interesting on the intralipids - Ive been having them every 4 weeks and had my last one at 6 weeks so was wondering if I'd really need another one at 10 weeks (given same logic re placenta must apply). I'm hoping not - this last one has made me really flu-y

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 27/02/2019 03:24

Great news Jen and Chocolate, I hope the relief from the scans lasts as long as possible! Is luteal support the progesterone suppositories? Last time I had them until 12 weeks but I was in a group and quite a few of them had stopped before then (gradually) with no issue.

That's great about your biopsy results cupcakes, and thanks everyone on your thoughts about transfers.

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 13/03/2019 03:12

How are you getting on @NoCupcakesOrCocktails ? You must be about to start..good luck!

Still waiting here. AF is due at the weekend so I will hopefully be starting next week. I was reading through all the information and I have to wait three cycles between IVF attempts! Pfft.

I hope everyone else is doing well.

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 14/03/2019 19:52

Hi @GenghisKahnSchmitz yes am just waiting for AF, so hopefully in the next 5 days I should start. Are you doing short protocol? If so we should be on a similar timescale 👍 yeah I've always had to wait 3 months between fresh cycles. It's so annoying but fingers crossed this go will work for you so it won't matter!

@Jenbot78 and @Chocolateandwineplease27 How's it going?

@twinkledag not sure if you are still reading but have been thinking of you x

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 17/03/2019 09:59

Urgh, a year since this thread started...

It seems like we will be Cupcakes as I'm doing a short protocol too, good luck to you too! AF arrived yesterday evening so I guess I'll be starting tomorrow..

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 18/03/2019 07:52

@GenghisKahnSchmitz good luck for today! I know none of us want to be doing this but it's exciting to start Smile

AF is late for me, it was really late last month after the hysteroscopy. Hoping it's on it's way soon 🤞

I'm at the 2 year point of trying in June 😮 can scarcely believe it

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 19/03/2019 09:43

I hope AF has turned up @NoCupcakesOrCocktails And sorry that you're nearly at the two year mark, this infertility malarkey sucks.

I went to my anaesthetist consultation today for EC and he was such a wanker. Between that and trying to work out how to juggle DS, getting to the hospital (it's a good bit away), DH's work potentially clashing with the appointment, I'm feeling really apathetic about the whole thing. And my Mum arrives for a few days and she doesn't know anything about our infertility woes so I don't know whether to tell her or attempt to stab myself on the sly. Sorry about the offload!

Chocolateandwineplease27 · 19/03/2019 16:18

Good luck cupcakes and genghis am thinking of you both xx

Sorry its all so much genghis - always such a lot to juggle plus the pressure of pretending everything is normal.

Lots of positive vibes for you both xxx

Jenbot78 · 19/03/2019 18:55

Hello all, good to hear from this thread. Sounds positive that treatment is getting going again but it is a bloody nightmare organising it around childcare and work. I really struggled with this last FET on that front as had to arrange four intralipid treatments too. It just really adds to the stress of it all I think! Ghenghis my mother and mother in law did quite a bit of the childcare but I always lied about the reason and said it was work related! I couldn’t take the questions/worried anxious faces every time I came home from an appointment!

All OK here, just waiting waiting waiting for 12 week scan. Very anxious as always....

twinkledag · 23/03/2019 12:49

Hey all

Congrats to all the bfps and babies! And good luck to everyone taking the plunge again.

I've been reading but not posting but thought I'd say hi.

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 23/03/2019 13:32

Hi @twinkledag how are you?! Have been thinking of you x

@GenghisKahnSchmitz how's it going? I get that feeling! Feel like I totally can't be arsed half the time but also desperate to just get it done. Have you had any scans yet?

I finally started on Friday after really late AF. They think transfer will be 9th/10th April, am going to put both my Frosties back. Feel a bit nervous about having a double transfer but seems the logical thing to do as I've only got 2 left and I'm now on cycle 4 (of second time ttc) so clearly not having much luck!

Glad all is going ok jen and chocolate

twinkledag · 23/03/2019 13:39

Hey @NoCupcakesOrCocktails, I know you have so thought it about time I posted ☺️

I'm going to start with Reprofit next week when my period arrives!

Good luck with your transfer, you deserve success after all you've been through xx

👋 to everyone else!

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 24/03/2019 07:03

@twinkledag am so pleased to hear you are having another go. Will be keeping everything crossed for you this time 🤞 keep us updated on how you are doing if you feel up to it. Thanks obviously I really want this go to work, am feeling very low about it all to be honest as I know you'll understand
