Trying to conceive baby#2 following ivf treatment for #1

lucieloos · 17/03/2018 18:34

I thought I would start this thread as I can't see anything similar. We underwent many rounds of icsi and following a couple of bfns, and an ectopic pregnancy we were finally blessed with our beautiful daughter last year.

We recently started thinking about baby no 2 and had 4 frozen embryos of which 2 had been tested and found to be chromosomally normal so are meant to have a better chance. We didnt have the other 2 tested.

A couple of weeks back we had our first fet with one of the tested embryos and got a bfp super early at 4dp5dt. Sadly by 8dpt the line was barely visible and resulted in a chemical pregnancy. I've been feeling really down about it as this was meant to be a super duper embryo with no genetic problems which they said was the main reason embryos fail.

I thought it would be easier trying for #2 and of course it is in a way as I realise how lucky I am to have had a baby but I can feel the infertility fog starting to descend again as I realise although I've had a brief respite I will never be like my fertile friends and I do really want another baby and a sibling for my little girl.

Im feeling a bit negative at the moment. We will probably go back for the other tested embryo in the near future but I can't see how I would ever get lucky enough to get 2 bfps in a row. These things just don't happen to me so just not too hopeful about it at all. We said that if we used all of our frosties with no success we would be happy with what we have but already I am thinking should I do more fresh cycles. I will be 39 soon though so time isn't on my side for that.

Anyway just wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation and would like to share the journey. Please come and say hi.

Hi I'm following with interest @Grandmastersnitch as in a years time I hope to be in your position.

I'm currently 30/40 with first baby via ICSI - second fresh cycle and in total 3 embryos put in but only one bfp . We also have two frozen embryos in the freezer than I'll want to use for number 2 ASAP (though I do want to BF for recommended 6 months)

Ivf was for MFI but I also have POF. Embryos are age 32 eggs. So despite being younger the POF means time is not on my side. Worried I'll use the two frozen up and get bfn and then no eggs on a fresh cycle further down the line as time will have passed me by.

The only thing I've concluded is to get on with it all as quick as possible but I would use the frozen first.

How long after stopping breast feeding did people's periods return? And how soon will they let you do a FET? (Assuming baby comes out ok and I'm coping alright/ready to go again!! I am aware I need to have this one first and I'm incredibly grateful to be in the position I am!!)

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 21/11/2018 12:10

@GenghisKahnSchmitz I'm really sorry it's good you are making plans though. That always helps me knowing I'm being proactive. Have you got anything nice planned over the next few weeks?

@hoping2018 hello and congratulations! I know that some others on here have continued breastfeeding while having more treatment so hopefully they might have some better advice. My little boy had stopped breastfeeding when I started trying again. With regards to periods mine came back at 8 months despite breastfeeding until he was 17 months. I would say it's hard to make any plans at this stage as you don't know what will happen or how you will feel! It's good to start thinking about what you would like to do though. Good luck with the last part of pregnancy!

I've got transfer booked in for a week today. Last buserilin is on thurs, can't wait! I hate the stuff Angry

hoping2018 · 22/11/2018 11:58

thanks @nocupcakesorcocktails

I know its hard to plan at this stage - by nature I am a planner though! and having a plan helps - I expect my plan will be to go to the fertility clinic at 6 months post natal and just see what advice they have.

Good luck for your transfer xx

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 29/11/2018 09:43

Congratulations and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy Hoping I felt rather hard done by when my period came back a month after birth despite breastfeeding! I went back to my consultant when DS was 6 months and then 12 months to start the fertility ball rolling again.

I hope the transfer went well Cupcakes? When will you test?

No news from me as just waiting for my next appointment.

Jenbot78 · 07/12/2018 12:07

Hello, wondering if we have any baby news yet? It must be nearly due dates for folks. Would absolutely love to hear your news 😀. Just jumped on for a quick update. FET planned for Jan 19, pending next thyroid test results. Have got a second opinion from Dr Ndukwe at Zita West who wants to treat immunes empirically with intralipids, steroids and clexane. So we’ll see how we go. Basically throwing everything and the kitchen sink at this little embryo!

Does anyone have any tips on where to source intralipids from in the North of England? I’m in West Yorkshire.

Hope you’re all well.

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 10/12/2018 03:50

Oh yes, I hope all the pregnancies are going well, and good luck for any imminent labours Grin

That's great that you have a date Jen, and fingers crossed that all goes well with the thyroid tests. Sorry no tips but I hope you source some easily.

I hope you're okay Cupcakes?

I went back to my consultant last week and we've agreed to move to IVF. I know that certain boxes have to be ticked and all that but DH has to have yet another SA and the next appointment isn't until the end of January! And then the results take two weeks, so realistically we'll be looking at March. I also asked if I could do another IUI in the meantime but the computer said no....On the positive side, this time of year always flies by so hopefully that'll make the wait easier..

Oh and at the weekend I was asked the dreaded 'when are you going to try for a second?' I know people don't mean anything bad by it but aargh! DS will be two in a few months so this is probably just the start!

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 10/12/2018 08:09

Hi everyone

@Jenbot78 I'm in the north but haven't had any intralipids so sorry can't help with that. Great that you have a potential start date though

@GenghisKahnSchmitz and you too with the start date! Hopefully with all Christmas stuff time will fly. I used to get asked so much about when I'm having another that i started telling people that it wasn't an option for me to shut them up. I still get asked occasionally and it bloody hurts!

My OTD is tomorrow which is my birthday so I've tested this morning. It's a BFN, I'm 12p5dt so I'm taking that as done. I don't care what the clinic say. Am feeling pretty fed up with them. I started bleeding from 2 days before transfer and have bled through the whole of the 2ww so clearly the whole cycle was a pile of crap. I was still really disappointed this morning though as of course I still had some blind hope. I'm not sure what's next for me, I've 2 frozen left but clearly something isn't right with having had all that bleeding so I imagine I've another long wait for investigations before I get another chance. I feel so angry this morning I feel like telling them I'm done. Does anyone else get this angry or is it just me Blush

Stacey1215 · 10/12/2018 08:12

Hi! Im ttc with baby number 3! ... so yesterday I took a random test and forgot all about it got up this morning to check test and could see a very faint line, took another and cant see anything!? I feel i had implantation spotting the other afternoon and brownish cm yesterday when i went to the toilet. Would you take yesterdays test as a positive? What would you do!? Freaking out mammy over here ..

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 10/12/2018 08:40

I'm really sorry Cupcakes, that sucks. I take you're on progesterone during the 2ww? Did the clinic say anything about the bleeding? And yes, I definitely get pissed off about the whole thing and the clinic and the unfairness of it all, and the people who come on to threads and are totally insensitive to their nature Hmm How long do you usually have to wait for a follow up appointment? I hope it won't be too long.

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 10/12/2018 08:41

Oh, and an early happy birthday - I'm sorry that it won't be as happy as it could have been.

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 10/12/2018 08:54

@GenghisKahnSchmitz thank you glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets angry with it all! I'm sure I will get follow up quite quick, it's normally within a few weeks but I think it could be January now with all the bank holidays which is fine. I can't be bothered with my birthday, will need to put a brave face on though as my husband always makes a real effort as I normally love my birthday so don't want to upset him

@Stacey1215 sorry I think you've posted in the wrong section as we can't really help with that kind of thing. I'd try in conception

lucieloos · 10/12/2018 10:02

Hi everyone! Haven't posted on here for ages now.

Ghengis, that's great that you can move to ivf it will give you such a better chance and like you say this time of year will fly by and it will be March before you know it.

Jen, good luck with your next round. Great that you are going to try all the immune stuff. I don't know anywhere that far north unfortunately. The furthest I know of is cherish in Sutton Coldfield.

Cupcakes, so sorry about your bfn. Have you had your progesterone levels tested? Maybe you need a higher dose.

Stacey, this group is for those ttc through fertility treatment. As others have said you're probably better asking in the conception threads.

Snow, hope all is well with you? Can't be too much longer left?

As for me, I'm now 39 weeks with number 2. Due next Tuesday so frantically trying to get everything done in time. Wishing everyone lots of success in 2019. In sure this board will be full of babies x

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 11/12/2018 02:35

Happy birthday Cupcakes! That's good news about the follow up being done quickly - hopefully they'll have some proper answers.

I can't believe you're due so soon lucie - the very best of luck with everything. There's something so magical about newborn babies at Christmas..

I'm annoyed again - we have to have a meeting with the biologist at the hospital because we're changing procedure, and her next appointment is at the end of February! Pfft - three months away! Then to make things worse, DH's job has informed them that they're changing (decreasing) the insurance cover from 1st January. Yikes.
I was so irritated that I've emailed my consultant to ask if she could try one more IUI before the end of the year. The timing is crap though as insemination will be right around New Year so everything will probably be closed down. However at least I've tried (again, she already said no last week but now I might garner more sympathy). Sorry for the ranting!

snowdayfet · 11/12/2018 10:10

Good luck lucie!

cupcakes happy birthday and am sorry about bfn. It really sucks.

ghenghis good news about moving to
Ivf although the timing sucks. So much waiting in this game!

Not long to go now for me - just a month or so. Am heavy and uncomfortable so really ready for this baby to arrive.

Hoping everyone on this thread has lots of lovely stuff planned for the holiday season and that 2019 brings lots of babies for us all!

PonyPals · 15/12/2018 14:27

Hi all, haven't been on for ages. Thought I would pop in and see how everyone is doing.
Can't believe you are at 39 weeks @lucieloos time has gone so fast!
Good luck for the birth and I'm sure it will all go well.
@snowdayfet I think we are pretty close with our due dates. I am currently 32+5 and certainly feeling like a beached wale in this heat.

Merry Xmas everyone!!!

snowdayfet · 25/12/2018 10:09

Merry Christmas everyone!

lucie hopefully you are snuggling at home by now with your little one.

To everyone else, I hope that 2019 brings you peace, love and (fingers crossed) lots of lovely new babies xx

lucieloos · 25/12/2018 20:07

Merry Christmas everyone! I had a little boy a week ago today. Was in labour for 10 hours but he was facing the wrong way and was back to back so even though I had been pushing for 3 hours he barely moved and got stuck. They tried a forceps delivery but it didn't work so had to have an emergency csection. All a bit traumatic but he's here now and we're all ok.

Hope 2019 brings lots of babies. Good luck to you snow. Keep us posted xx

OP posts:
snowdayfet · 26/12/2018 08:56

Oh wow lucie congrats! And a little boy! Your labour sounds very similar to my first - EMCS aren’t that fun but the most important thing is that baby is here safely. Enjoy him & a very merry Christmas to you x

Chocolateandwineplease27 · 01/01/2019 13:39

Gaaaah I didn't realise there were new posts! Dropped off for some reason.

Massive congratulations Lucie - hope you've had a lovely Christmas with your little boy.

Hope everyone else survived Christmas OK? Ive really enjoyed this year now my ds is 18 months. Dreading work tomorrow!

genghis it's always one thing after another isn't it. Hope you can get something sorted ASAP.

snow good luck - not long!!

Sorry for not checking back on everyone but I'm on my phone and half the screen is cracked.

I'm really wishing we'd cracked on with ivf sooner after number one. I delayed it because I thought I needed to get my head down at work but we've had some many delays I'm now kicking myself. I had a hysteroscopy last month with a view to doing ivf this cycle but then my period came early and the bloody lab is shut til the 7th so the timing didn't work - so frustrating and upsetting as feels like we've been waiting for ages.

GenghisKahnSchmitz · 02/01/2019 09:22

Congratulations Lucie! The birth sounded stressful, so I'm so glad that all went well in the end and that he's safe and sound (and you too!)

Pesky labs being closed Chocolate - I had the same issue for another IUI over Christmas. How did the hysteroscopy go? I hope this cycle goes quickly for you so you can get cracking on the ivf soon.

Still waiting for appointments here. I did however get all my blood tests results so busy comparing with the old results, googling and killing time. Ah, the joys.

Happy new year to everyone!

Grandmastersnitch · 02/01/2019 10:34

Congratulations Lucie, so glad that he is here safe and sound.

I am thinking about starting the process for FET now. Unexpectedly I had to have surgery recently, (completely unrelated to TTC), so need to heal a bit from that. Realistically, I think I will be looking at late spring/summer. Just want to get cracking but I want to stop breast feeding first (and my clinic will make me).

In the meantime praying for a miracle conception - not going to happen!

Happy new year to you all
Keep in touch

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 14/01/2019 11:15

Congratulations Lucie! Sounds eventful but glad all is well Thanks

Hope everyone else is ok. I'm now waiting for a hysteroscopy before my next attempt. Always a wait for me for one reason or another! Drives me crazy! I'm focusing on loosing weight which is going ok so far. Already shifted nearly half a stone

Chocolateandwineplease27 · 14/01/2019 11:58

genghis do you have an appointment yet? Hysteroscopy was fine. They didn't find anything so I'm taking that to mean it was a total waste of time and we could have cycled again straight away. (obviously I'm incapable of looking on the bright side).

nocupcakes well done on the weight loss - I'm trying to do the same! Hope the waiting goes quickly - will you cycle after your hysteroscopy?

As for me - period arrived today so starting estrogen patches tomorrow. After feeling desparate to start I'm now nervous about disappearing down the ivf black hole again. Feel quite nagative about it working and not sure how ill pick myself up again afterwards. It's the fact you just have to carry on as normal with work/life etc which I find so tough. I always want to hide away.

I've made a few good nct friends and two are now pregnant again so lots of sharing of scan pics - might have to mute the group chat for a while....

I hope the hysteroscopy goes well cupcakes. When is it scheduled for? Hopefully not too long away. And well done on the weight loss - I'm also trying to focus on weightloss and becoming fitter (you'd never guess that it's January Smile )

That's good news that your hysteroscopy went well chocolate though I understand that it also must have been frustrating. Good luck with this round, it's all just so head wrecking. I've sussed out three possible pregnancies in the coming months - it definitely doesn't bother me as much as before DC1 but it still stings (and is getting worse) so I like to try and prepare myself (I probably sound weird!)

Still waiting here - my consultant agreed to another IUI this month as the wait for the IVF is now pushing into March/April (so much red tape), so I'm waiting for AF to arrive to give it another go...
