Trying to conceive baby#2 following ivf treatment for #1

I thought I would start this thread as I can't see anything similar. We underwent many rounds of icsi and following a couple of bfns, and an ectopic pregnancy we were finally blessed with our beautiful daughter last year.

We recently started thinking about baby no 2 and had 4 frozen embryos of which 2 had been tested and found to be chromosomally normal so are meant to have a better chance. We didnt have the other 2 tested.

A couple of weeks back we had our first fet with one of the tested embryos and got a bfp super early at 4dp5dt. Sadly by 8dpt the line was barely visible and resulted in a chemical pregnancy. I've been feeling really down about it as this was meant to be a super duper embryo with no genetic problems which they said was the main reason embryos fail.

I thought it would be easier trying for #2 and of course it is in a way as I realise how lucky I am to have had a baby but I can feel the infertility fog starting to descend again as I realise although I've had a brief respite I will never be like my fertile friends and I do really want another baby and a sibling for my little girl.

Im feeling a bit negative at the moment. We will probably go back for the other tested embryo in the near future but I can't see how I would ever get lucky enough to get 2 bfps in a row. These things just don't happen to me so just not too hopeful about it at all. We said that if we used all of our frosties with no success we would be happy with what we have but already I am thinking should I do more fresh cycles. I will be 39 soon though so time isn't on my side for that.

Anyway just wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation and would like to share the journey. Please come and say hi.

It’s so bad. I used to think getting the bfp was the end of it all - now I know it’s only the beginning of the anxiety really. I didn’t relax first time round until I had my baby in my arms (and even now i still freak out that he’s died in his sleep if I wake up in the morning and he’s still sleeping Hmm).

lucieloos · 10/04/2018 13:35

Oh god yeah I know exactly what you mean. It's definitely only the beginning and I so panic little one is not breathing if she sleeps for more than about 4 hours 😂

What day did you test on last time snow?

twinkledag · 10/04/2018 14:03

I still go in every morning at 4-5am and check my son is still breathing and he's 3.5 Blush

Snowdayfet · 10/04/2018 14:05

Ok I feel slightly less psycho now. My husband thinks I’m a lunatic Grin

I tested on day 4 last time lucie as that’s when I got my bfp last time. This time I got a bfp on day 6 & did my beta on day 10 when I could see the line not getting any darker.

lucieloos · 10/04/2018 14:12

Ok thanks snow

Making myself feel better by reading the thread on AIBU about women who had babies well into their 40s!

lucieloos · 10/04/2018 19:07

I can't see it

Oh sorry, it's in Chat not AIBU.

lucieloos · 10/04/2018 19:32

Still can't see it but don't worry. Glad it's making you feel a little better Smile

It's called 'who is the oldest person you know you got pregnant'. I'll tag you in it!

Snowdayfet · 10/04/2018 19:42

I just had a look. It feels like a foreign country to me tbh. The idea of being unexpectedly able to get pregnant at any age! Does. Not. Compute.

In some good news my doc has prescribed thyroxine so I can start on that tomorrow as soon as I get the script.

Jenbot78 · 10/04/2018 19:49

snow thanks for the tip off. Glad it's not just me who searches the internet for tales of older mums!! One poster on there said 35 was the oldest! Ooer....

Jenbot78 · 10/04/2018 19:50

Also twinkle sorry to hear your news. I hope you are hiding away and also having some booze. 🍷 Harder to do now but after my first ivf failed I was pissed for about three weeks (OK not ALL the time but a lot...)

twinkledag · 10/04/2018 20:17

That made me laugh @Jenbot78! I'm not drinking, I don't really feel like it. Also, drinking is a gateway to smoking for me so it's best if I stay away.

@Snowdayfet - I know what you mean re accidentally getting pregnant but I thought it was a good thread to show that we can still fall pregnant after 40. 40 was my cut off but I'm now thinking of stretching it to 41...

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 10/04/2018 20:34

Hi can I join you guys? I'm also ttc number 2 after needing ivf for number 1. I just logged on to reply to Twinkledag on another thread and this was the top thread on active list. I hope you are doing ok today Twinkle? I've not read the full thread so will do that now 👍

The short version of my story is unexplained fertility, got my DS from my 3rd ICSI cycle. I had 4th cycle last year, BFN but got 4 frozen. I had my first FET transfer in March, got a BFP but it wasn't to be. I'm waiting for my second scan at EPU on Friday and will then hopefully get a plan on medical/surgical management.

twinkledag · 10/04/2018 20:46

Welcome @NoCupcakesOrCocktails ThanksThanksThanks

NoCupcakesOrCocktails · 10/04/2018 20:59

I've read the full thread, hello everyone! I recognise nearly all your names. My DS is nearly 3 so a bit older than a lot of yours but I've always dipped in and out of the infertility threads. I so identify with the being expected to be grateful for having the one child and I am so so grateful but I yearn so much for another! I've been relatively open with friends about needing IVF, I find it hard to hide my emotions so have found it easier to say where I am at. I do regret it sometimes as people aren't always sensitive about it Confused

My DH would not even consider doing IVF again until last year so we have tried naturally for 2 years before starting again.

Jen I think you said you are at Care? I am too!

Lucie how are you doing in the 2ww? I'm an early tester too but wish I wasn't as I drive myself crazy!

lucieloos · 10/04/2018 21:07

Hi cupcakes so sorry to hear about your bfp. I've done my fair share of time at epu and know how horrendously hard it is. I hope everything is resolved soon. I had medical management after many weeks of going back and forth. It was hard but I really needed to draw a line under things by then and try and sort my life out. Hope things go ok on Friday Flowers

Hi cupcakes sorry about your miscarriage. Hoping you can get it resolved as painlessly as possible Flowers

lucieloos · 11/04/2018 09:42

So it looks like I have a bfp this morning! It's a good line and better than last time around but I'm not getting my hopes up at all yet as this time last time I had all sorts of thoughts and plans going through my head and then it all went wrong. It's still very early yet so will wait until after the weekend and have a beta on Monday if it's still looking promising.

Oh hurrah lucie! That’s great news. A good first step! Hoping it sticks tight and the beta on monday is successful. Yay!
