Hardy. I would stay away just in case but that’s bcoz I tend to blame myself for everything all the time. But also I would never believe in a million years that one glass of wine would do anything even if u r pregnant. As I was reading about ivf there was a post of American girl, she been told right after the transfer to go home, get a glass of wine and chill.

Aliona19 · 31/10/2017 14:13

Dinks are you sure it’s a bug and not super pregnant self? 🙃 hope u will feel better very soon. And i m with you on looking like I crawl from under the rock 😂 each time I need to go to central London especially after work I feel like a moron among those well polished boys and girls 😄

Atikakck · 31/10/2017 14:49

Dinks - maybe dats pregnancy symptoms xxx

Dbear35 · 31/10/2017 15:13

Thanks everyone , I am nervous but excited about tomorrow hopefully I'll get a good nights sleep. Just been for a 4 mile walk to try and knacker myself out. 9 embies was more than we could hope for and whatever happens in the next few weeks if we have some spare to be frozen then we are so lucky!

rosewrites - Scan Friday exciting ! I remember after my first scan (7 day of stims) I didn't feel bloated and was concerned but my follys were reading between 9-17 , however two days later on my second scan I felt like my ovaries where about to explode ! Which explained why they brought forward my EC 3 days as they had a growing spurt. Drinking lots and lots of water helps !

Aliona - I know it's easier said than done trying to relax but a good head space is so important. I struggled at the beginning of this IVF roller-coaster constantly worrying and stressing and feeling hard done by (still do some days) but I have been trying to train my brain into thinking of a positive thought every time I have a negative one and it helps.

dinks hope you feel better soon boo to the cold! I've been WFH all week as I just know there are loads of people in the office with colds and I don't want to catch anything.

star - Keep that chilled attitude whatever anyone else says! I work in a high stress environment and was constantly stressing but in the end had to give myself a talking too and remind myself in my job know one is going to die if I don't get a spread sheet finished or an insurance policy out on time.

hardy - tbh since the beginning of IVF meds on Sept 30th I have had maybe 5-6 glasses of wine in total. obviously from tomorrow then im tee total, but I say have a glass and enjoy! However if you are debating whether to have this maybe you shouldn't ?

Good to see there is another GBB fan! Sophie is my winner!

RoseWrites · 31/10/2017 15:46

Hardy I'd have the wine... I know I'm not meant to be drinking, but in the past few weeks I've had a few beers in the pub, red wine with dinner, and a sneaky night cap of Bailey's with my OH at night. That sounds like I've been getting hammered! I haven't, but I most definitely haven't gone cold turkey...

Coincidently, I was doing some reading about what a bad idea drinking was (although a bit late now...) And came across this from Robert Winstone. It made me feel better! 😊

RoseWrites · 31/10/2017 15:48

Hardy he says...

Let me be blunt. Whilst there has been huge publicity given to taking supplements and having acupuncture as an adjunct to IVF, there have been no properly done trials which show that having these treatments is of any advantage whatsoever. They do not appear to do any harm, but the claims made for both dietary supplements and acupuncture have not been substantiated in serious research trials. As it happens, I am particularly interested in this area and am intending to undertake a randomised controlled study of acupuncture in IVF patients in the fairly near future. Unfortunately, the results of such a trial will not be particularly helpful to you because I think it’s going to take at least a year to get really valid results.

You mentioned the grade of your embryos. There is no standardised grading of embryos so it is difficult to say whether what you have been told is in any way meaningful. What I can definitely tell you is that the grade of an embryo is generally not informative with regard to the chances of a pregnancy. I often think that it is a bit like looking at somebody’s face and saying to oneself ‘that person looks intelligent’. I think looking at an embryo down the microscope is about as reliable.

You also mention caffeine and alcohol. I have to tell you that I am very unconvinced that caffeine in moderate amounts has any effect on the outcome of IVF or indeed any aspect of female fertility. In fact, having an occasional cup of coffee might even be of benefit if you are somewhat gently addicted, as so many people are. With regard to alcohol, I also believe that the negative press given to alcohol in pregnancy is not truly justified. Many years ago in the very early days of IVF, for a bit of fun and to bond with my patients, I actually did a randomised controlled trial testing a glass of red wine or a glass of white wine at the time of embryo transfer. The pregnancy rate was about 4% higher in people who had a glass of red wine with me at the time of the embryo transfer. Neither the dose of red wine all white wine made a significant difference from the overall pregnancy results we were getting at the time in under treated IVF patients! Burgundy was slightly better than Bordeaux. It is also worth bearing in mind that for a long time alcohol was used therapeutically during pregnancy to control uterine contractions in people undergoing premature labour. There is no doubt that this was quite effective as a treatment, but the problem with it was that the dose of alcohol that was required was so great that it made many women feel rather ill and sometimes sick. This treatment fell into disrepute in consequence but it does underline the point that minor drinks or small doses of alcohol probably do very little harm and may actually have a calming influence. This was my idea of giving alcohol at the time of embryo transfer because I recognised that this was a very anxious time for many of my patients and it was a good way of ensuring they felt a bit more confident. Also, in the very early days of embryo transfer, putting embryo back into the uterus was quite a fraught process, and if the surgeon also had a glass of alcohol, this tended to control the natural hand tremor that all people may get when they feel anxious.

Forgive this slightly light-hearted response to your letter. But in summary, I have to say that I do not think you can do much to improve your chances of pregnancy and embryo transfer, nor can you do a great deal to reduce those chances either. In a good unit, a frozen embryo transfer will have an average chance of around 15% pregnancy rate but this may depend on a whole range of different circumstances of course.

Whatever you decide, going to your treatment feeling optimistic and calm if you can. I feel for you and very much hope that you will be successful.

Hardygirl78 · 31/10/2017 15:55

Dbear, it's daft - I know this cycle hasn't worked, I've been pregnant 3 times before and each time I knew before I even tested. I had a BFN this morning, I've had my period, I know in my bones that it hasn't worked - but the obedient school girl part of me thinks that I have behave as if I'm pregnant until Thursday. I'll see how I feel later...

I can't wait for bake off tonight and yes, I think Sophie has been the most consistent and deserves to win. I have a soft spot for Stephen though.

Hardygirl78 · 31/10/2017 16:08

Rose, thank you for posting that - the man makes a lot of sense!

dinksandbinks · 31/10/2017 16:13

Rose Thank you for posting that!! It’s really interesting.

On caffeine, a good friend of mine is an epidemiologist and she said that the link between miscarriage and caffeine is that women who have a strong early pregnancy tend to go off coffee (morning sickness) and a strong early pregnancy is more likely to result in a live birth. There is very little causal evidence to suggest any other relation between caffeine and pregnancy. Fascinating!!

dinksandbinks · 31/10/2017 16:19

As for me, I can’t tell if I have a bug, a migraine or pregnancy sickness. All I know is I’m very glad to be on my way home!!

I’ll reply to everyone properly later. Hardy I know what you mean about waiting to test when you’ve been told to! I’d have the same feelings! But as a bystander I say have the drink ;) xxx

RoseWrites · 31/10/2017 16:19

Glad you found it useful 😊

The link between alcohol and caffeine is really interesting. So is the embryo grading... yesterday when the doctor was saying how big the follicles were I was just thinking "surely she can't measure them that quickly" and now i think she might have been guessing! 😂

RoseWrites · 31/10/2017 16:21

dinks I hope you feel better soon. And I really hope it's a bubba growing rather than a bug... 😊🤞

Starlumiere · 31/10/2017 16:23

Hardy this is a tricky question BUT from what I have read and people around me it has been clear that a woman can be pregnant and still bleed. My mother was bleeding while she was pregnant with me up to 3 months. Some do all their pregnancies. I am not trying to give you hope, but if it was me (although I don’t drink alcohol so don’t have this problem) I will make sure that I am 100% sure that I am NOT pregnant.

I do however understand you want to move on and get on with your life because everything seems to be pointing to the BFN. How sure are you sweetie? X

Starlumiere · 31/10/2017 16:25

OMG I just saw what you have all been to while I was working like a mad woman!!! Lots of catching up to do!

Love it! Love it! Love it!

Speak later XXX

Dbear35 · 31/10/2017 16:26

rose what a cracking post I loved reading this it made me giggle Grin

hardy Do what you feel is right for you, as you say you know your body. Perhaps waiting until Thursday is the best solution.

My DH is also a fan and I think rooting for Stephen !

dinksandbinks · 31/10/2017 16:33

Kate to win!!!

Starlumiere · 31/10/2017 16:42

Rose very interesting letter indeed, thank youSmile! Yes I concur, life is not black & white, but most of the time grey….

Hardygirl78 · 31/10/2017 18:19

Star, I'm very sure - bfn on a superdrug early response test this morning with first morning urine, my boobs had been killing me up to the day the bleeding started (they are always really sore for me in early pregnancy) and they're absolutely fine now. I had bleeding during all 3 of my pregnancies including dd but it was nothing like what I had over the weekend.

I'll see later, I'm about to take dd out trick or treating!

otters2017 · 31/10/2017 18:28

Feeling anxious and nervous and excited all at once. Dreamt that I got a BFP which felt so real that when I woke up I thought I did and was looking for the stick! Really hope my dream will come true tomorrow. Out tonight to distract myself. Had a pampering facial and massage which was very nice and relaxing.
Hope you're all doing ok. Sorry no time to catch up with everyone but thinking of all of you x

Hi lovely ladies, I stayed away today from social media as busy but also in case of GBBO spoilers after stupid Prue but couldn’t stay away from wishing Harry & otters AMAZING luck for tomorrow

Then of course I had to read everything and Dbear that’s brilliant, 5 days are the best I believe though some of us aren’t able to take it that far so you are in a brilliant position well done!! Awesome!!! 🤣😀good luck for tomorrow, I will be thinking sticky sticky thoughts

hardy if I were you I would be drinking wine. Many a thousand child has been conceived whilst drinking wine, a glass is not going to hurt a few will not hurt and whilst doing my EC I was told I did not have to stop just be sensible so why would it matter for you now? You sent pregnant, like you say, you know that. Don’t beat yourself up. But it’s up to you. Gosh life shouldn’t stop! But that’s just me.
