Fertility treatment- IUI

Hi, has anyone had IUI fertility treatment? We've been TTC for 3 years now. Had all the tests. We have a consultation tomorrow at the hospital about moving forward with treatment and we've been given an indication that IUI may be the best option to try first before IVF.

I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there who has been through this or is going through this.

Thanks

Happy birthday snowy 🎉🎈🍰🍷

Hope you are doing something nice for your birthday.

I know what you mean about timings. If this cycle fails we will be waiting a month so we can try ivf. But we will in fact have to wait two months as we are away in America for a wedding so won’t be able to start until the end of Jan.... and that’s providing my cycle days haven’t changed or been affected by iui.

Anyway, I’m off to have my cd10 Scan today then we are putting together a new dining table. X

Thanks CSDS, nothing overly exciting planned just heading to my mum and dads for dinner and lots of snuggles from my puppies. Also just waiting for AF to turn up so I can ring clinic and get the next cycle started.

Good luck with the scan today and with building the dining room table. DH and I can't build anything together, he is stubborn and won't read instructions and it always pisses me off Smile

Cobblestones · 06/11/2017 19:44

Belated happy birthday snowy. I hope it was a good one despite the bfn. I really admire your strength and that of csds.

Csds - how did the scan go?

I’m thinking of using ovulation sticks this month just to see if anything is happening. My cycles are so irregular.. otherwise nothing much to update at my end. Have thrown myself into work and looking forward to visiting my family over Xmas. Dh and I have discussed getting our kitchen refurbished for the longest time so we have finally kick started the process and have builders coming in for quotes. Feels good to focus on something else for a change.. though I don’t know how this will work alongside ivf in jan.

snowy1982 · 07/11/2017 12:50

Thanks cobblestones, it was a very quiet bday, went to my mum and dads for dinner and my brother brought my nephews round. We got out the old home videos and watched some of them which was good craic.

We put a new kitchen in a couple years ago, although we have since moved house and have another new one, I loved planning it all and picking tiles etc. I spent ages looking for just the right ones, it is def a good distraction

csds · 07/11/2017 16:29

Hi guys

So Sunday’s Scan was ok, had one follicle 15mm and two small ones the other side. Went back today (Tuesday) and one is 22mm so they want me to trigger tonight at 7pm and go in for insemination tomorrow.

I’ll need to ask if I am ok to have local anaesthetic next week or to wait as went the dentist today and they want to take one of my wisdom teeth out 😳x

snowy1982 · 07/11/2017 16:59

Not that I know this for definite, but i’d imagine a local would be ok.

That’s some growth from Sunday, good luck for tomorrowSmile

Csds - good luck today!

Snowy - happy belated birthday.

Cobblestones - hope you are well.

csds · 08/11/2017 07:37

Thanks Toomany,

Hope you’re well, how’s that daughter of yours? X

You can have local aneasthetic after an IUI. They even operated on my broken wrist after one, they say it didn't matter. They did give me different painkillers afterwards though, so mention it in any case. I got pregnant that cycle too (but lost it later on).

csds · 08/11/2017 17:11

Thanks blackcat, yes my Consultant said it would be ok. Which is a relief as if rather have my wisdom tooth out sooner rather than later.

Insemination went well, although this one was a little more uncomfortable than usual. Lining is 8.5mm so I’m really happy with than.

We’ve book our consultation in to discus the next steps with ivf if we are unsuccessful this cycle.

This is the one cycle I’ll actually take a pregnancy test, which will be two days before my blood test. Reason being it’s hubbys birthday so if by any stroke of luck I am pregnant it would be a fabulous birthday surprise. But if the test if negative then I won’t tell him and I’ll wait for the blood test to confirm ..... at least that way it won’t spoil his birthday x

OP posts:
snowy1982 · 09/11/2017 09:10

CSDS, the NHS never tell me what my lining measures (the private clinic did) they only ever tell me whether it’s ok or not, do you know what is a good measurement and what is a bad one?

Glad insemination went well (although not the more uncomfortable bit) sounds like a good plan for testing and I really hope it’s a good birthday surprise for your DH.

I had baseline scan this morning, all looking good so starting injections tonight

csds · 09/11/2017 17:29

I’ve just googled and it seems that 7mm/8mm

‘An optimal measurement of thickness for the implantation of a fertilized egg is greater than 7 mm and preferably greater than 8 mm, regardless of the type of treatment one undergoes’

Glad you scan went well, did they give you any info? Do you inject for 5 days? X

Hi ladies

Hope you’re all keeping well. How is everything going this week?

snowy1982 · 13/11/2017 20:06

CSDS, I inject for 7 days after first scan and then back for another scan this thursday. How’s things going with you?

Random question for you all, what are you opinions on having gel nails (well bio sculpture nails but basically the same thing) through all this. I’ve read stuff online about how it’s bad and other things saying it’s ok, don’t know whether I should stop getting my nails done

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 13/11/2017 21:41

Csds - I suppose it’s down to personal opinions re the gel nails. I always had gel nails done while TTC and also while I was pregnant. After having my baby I didn’t have time to visit a salon and bought the kit myself and do them myself at home now. For me, it’s my little thing that I do as ‘me time’.

But I also coloured my hair during pregnancy, which I know some people wouldn’t agree with.

I didn’t drink alcohol while TTC or pregnant, or breastfeeding, and I didn’t drink caffeine when pregnant or eat any soft cheese, sushi etc.

So I suppose it’s all about what you find acceptable. But to be honest I never worried about having my nails done. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer! Go with what you feel. When you’re going through all the crap that comes with infertility having your nails done might be a nice little treat And chance to relax.

You could always check with the salon beforehand that they use well known reputable brands such as CND and Shellac. It might put your mind at rest.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 13/11/2017 21:48

Snowy - just reread your question. Bio sculpture are the proper hard gel extensions rather than gel polish aren’t they? I used to have bio sculpture when we lived elsewhere, can’t find anywhere round here that does them unfortunately. They’re fab, the gel doesn’t yellow like other brands ( if you’re having clear or French) and they’re so strong! They also don’t need soaking off and can be infilled every time, unless of course you’re changing colour. I had them for about a year and only ever broke one in all that time. They also didn’t damage my own nails as they weren’t being exposed to acetone by soaking off. Not really helping with your decision but bio sculpture are good if done correctly and are a reputable good quality brand.

Sorry going off on one there! I love nails! If you get them done post a pic!

snowy1982 · 13/11/2017 21:52

Toomany, I am just at that stage where I am worrying about anything and do and how it could impact on TTC, I know I am probably going overboard worrying about the nails, the salon I go to is very good and the polish they use is really good too.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 13/11/2017 23:01

Snowy - totally get where you’re coming from. You don’t want to do anything to jeopardise your chances do you? The amount of time I spent on Google and just ended up worrying even more about things! Everyone has their own opinions. And there’s so much info on the internet now your brain gets overloaded with it and you don’t know what to believe!

snowy1982 · 14/11/2017 06:43

Think i’ll ask the nurse when am in on Thursday, if she thinks it’s ok then i’ll keep going with them

csds · 14/11/2017 13:00

Hi guys

I’ve had a rough weekend. My family dog has been put down. It was sudden. So I’ve been sobbing on and off since Friday.

Other than that, I feel fine, nothing really to report.

How’s things with everyone else ? X

CSDS I am so sorry to hear about your dog, I have 2 myself so I know how hard this must be for you SadFlowers

mysticmoon · 14/11/2017 13:37

Hi all. I've name changed as this is very personal, but just wanted to join you to share my IUI story as I know a lot of people are very sceptical about it.

We were TTC for 2 years. Lots of tests - nothing wrong. We were diagnosed as having 'unexplained infertility'. Both late 30s. We were about to go on the waiting list for IVF but got pregnant on our very first IUI. Two years later we TTC again and again nothing. Got pregnant on the first IUI again (privately funded this time).

DCs are now 4 and 1. I remember the success rate at the time for our age at the clinic was less than 1 percent. But ours is (so far!) 100 percent!

So it's worth a go. Best of luck everyone. xx

csds · 15/11/2017 19:26

Thanks for sharing mystic.

Snowy I hope your hospital visit goes well tomorrow, Let us know what the nurse says about gel nails.

I know with ivf they ask you not to wear any nail varnish or lipstick x

OP posts:
snowy1982 · 16/11/2017 08:05

Nurse said she didn’t know so not overly helpful.

Scan was grand, IUI tomorrow, had 1 follicle at 21mm and another at 15mm, the rest were all very small.

Mystic, it’s good to hear the success stories Smile

csds · 16/11/2017 18:14

Hope tomorrow goes well snowy x
