To respond to the OP.... 'why is it such a story?' I think the ridiculous people who set up nasty facebook pages and sent threatening letters to the family actually made it much bigger story than it started out as.

I don't live in an urban environment, but a rural one, lots more animals, lots less problems because they have their place and we have ours, badgers excepted - they are just meanies - and ne'er the twain etc.

Perhaps the problem is that we want it all ways, we want to be able to leave our doors open - and get neither burgled nor visited by the wildlife.
