I think it is spot on, what do you think? It's a bit long.

here it is

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 12:56

no more thereor thna when the ira was at its peak imo

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 12:56

no more terror

bossykate · 14/07/2005 12:57

"Hmm bet londoners woudln't do that [i.e. show solidarity - my italics] if it happened eleswhere"

that's a long way from saying the uk media is london centric (which it is). that reads like "londoners don't give a when bad things happen other places". that's not a critique of the media that's a sweeping generalisation about millions of people.

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 12:57

my comment in &context was in response to this post

"I want to demonstrate solidarity with Londoners."

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 12:57

well it my opinion and youll ahev to lump it

oliveoil · 14/07/2005 12:57

I was caught up in the IRA bomb in Mcr in 1996 and it was anyone with an Irish accent that got looked at then. Same with Muslims now.

Blu · 14/07/2005 12:57

ff - you said that us Londoners wouldn't show solidarity if it happened in another city.

The media are covering it in great detail because it is a terrorist attack.

Alongside that, Londoners are actually getting on with life...you only have to see HunkerMunkers thread to see that londoners are v well aware that in the scale of things the impact has been less than catastrophic (excpet for the poor individual families who have borne the brunt).

I think it was deeply insulting to say that Londoners wouldn't have felt solidarity and sympathy for the occupants of other cities if it had happened there.

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 12:58

well tough

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 12:58

and blu htink its naiive to think it isnt conveninet fo hthe media to cover this

oliveoil · 14/07/2005 12:59

I think we were all concerned at the Madrid bombings. Media coverage was at a similar level too.

OP posts:
fishfinger · 14/07/2005 12:59

yes but not at this level

snafu · 14/07/2005 12:59

ff think your usually amusing cynicism is misplaced on this one. I would do the same wherever it happened.

kissalot · 14/07/2005 12:59

Al Quada and its groups are targeting the whole of the Western world, look at 9/11 thousands died and the Madrid bombs. I just do not think this can be compared to the IRA (but admit to not knowing much about IRA at the height of it all as I was quite young then)

oliveoil · 14/07/2005 13:01

The IRA gave warnings, even though in Mcr everyone went the wrong way.

OP posts:
fishfinger · 14/07/2005 13:01

yeah liekt he deliberately misleading omagh bombing warning

Blu · 14/07/2005 13:01

I honestly don't think it's being covered in detail because it happened outside the jounalists offices, no!

Did we have lots and lots of detailed coverage of the WTC attacks because it was a nice holiday for the journalists and they could nip into Bloomingdales in between reports, perhaps?

If it happened wh=ere you live, i think you would have press aplenty on your doorstep.

beatie · 14/07/2005 13:02

Not comparing the IRA to Al Qaeda. But you suggest all Muslims and immigrants should not be allowed to live in Britain because 4 'Muslim' bombers have killed 50 people. I wondered if you thought Irish people should have been denied access to the country during the IRA bombing campaigns?

oliveoil · 14/07/2005 13:03

Who suggests?

OP posts:
fishfinger · 14/07/2005 13:03

sorry is that to me/

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 13:03

bundle · 14/07/2005 13:03

this is nothing like when the IRA campaigns were at their height, fishy, believe me

oliveoil · 14/07/2005 13:04

oh ok

OP posts:
beatie · 14/07/2005 13:04

Kisalot suggests.

Blu · 14/07/2005 13:05

Bloody attention-seeking Londoners, getting themselves blow up! what people will do to get their picture in the paper!

kissalot · 14/07/2005 13:05

I never once said that ALL muslims should be banned from entering the UK, but yes I fully agree that the volume of these people coming in should be very dramatically reduced that goes for all immigrants.
