Just to respond to

"You were at just as much risk of being quoted by a journalist before"

I really don't understand that - please explain how the odd one off is exactly the same risk as a weekly column that will definitely be quoting an MN thread?

There were risks both times but they are not the same - surely that's obvious?

Oh, just kind of caught up with this (read thread no. 1) and wanted to send sympathies to Thunderduck, I would be livid.

what's the situation with copyright now? I assume the reason Mumsnet towers think the DM thing is good for publicity is mostly because publicity = advertising = more £££ for mumsnet towers?

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 15/08/2009 23:08

I think they thought they couldn't stop them but initial responses indicate that it is possible they can do something about it - no news yet on whether they will do anything though!

beanieb · 15/08/2009 23:11

Seems silly that the thing on the terms of use says one thing but Justinemumsnet person seems to think it's all ok for things to be lifted without 'express approval' because "it's good publicity".

"This Web site and its contents are copyright Mumsnet. All rights reserved. Reproduction of all or any substantial part of the contents in any form is prohibited. No part of the site may be distributed or copied for any commercial purpose without express approval."

I understand this is a public site and we put our lives and opinions out there for anyone to google, yadda yadda, but surely there should be some consistency in the terms and conditions.

Wonder if express approval was given?

daftpunk · 15/08/2009 23:14

lol king, i'm so dull sometimes i send myself to sleep...

i never post on the sex threads either.

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 15/08/2009 23:15

Well it is complicated by this "fair usage" thing, that means pretty much anyone can use a little bit of the content, of course things are very vauge when you come to the whole how much is a little bit question...

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 15/08/2009 23:16

Daftpunk, dull is not the first word that springs to mind when I hear your name being mentioned

HaggisNeepsnTatties · 15/08/2009 23:16

You do like the occasional 'feminist' thread though dont you DP??

JodieO · 15/08/2009 23:16

Beanie I would be amazed if it wasn't.

beanieb · 15/08/2009 23:19

Amazed if express approval wasn't given?

If so then doesn't the responsibility for the mix up of names and the upset it has caused fall on the person who proof read the stuff intended for publication before express approval was given?

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 15/08/2009 23:20

they've explicitly said that they didn't give permission prior to publication. are you calling justine a liar?

beanieb · 15/08/2009 23:26

Ah right, and no I am not

I think I read Justine saying that they hadn't given permission but I also got the general feeling Justine wasn't really that bothered that the DM (or aloah or whatsername Hardy or whever the ex-mumsnetter is) didn't seek permission, that mumsnet were thinking of changing the wording in the terms and conditions anyway, and that having this kind of thing lifted and put into the DM (And other papers) is good publicity for MN.

I just think it's all just a bit inconsistent.

and

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 15/08/2009 23:28

if she wasn't bothered then she wouldn't have chased her up on it.

daftpunk · 15/08/2009 23:30

why thank you king, you know iv'e always liked you..

haggis...i post on any thread that is a bit political...and yeah, i don't mind the occasional feminist thread....always good for a laugh...i can almost hear dittanys sighs...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 15/08/2009 23:31

I thought it was inspired King
You do know what the viking spelling of your name is, don't you?

HaggisNeepsnTatties · 15/08/2009 23:31

I thought we both did well to hold our own against Dittany....

beanieb · 15/08/2009 23:32

Ah - well I am not really sure who she was chasing or when. Before people got upset, or after/

anyway - I have only read the first thread so there's probably a lot I need to read back [peacesmiley]

All I know at the moment is that there are inconsistencies between what is written in the terms and conditions and what is actually done and MN towers would probably benefit from clearing those inconsistencies up. That's all

daftpunk · 15/08/2009 23:34

haggis, did you leave the thread around the same time as me..or did you stay till the end ?

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 15/08/2009 23:35

i think the same can be said of all websites, not to mention the fact that the will must be there to open your pockets to fight these things. the internet's the wild west at teh moment.

HaggisNeepsnTatties · 15/08/2009 23:35

You should know who I am...you invited me clubbing!!

scottishmummy · 15/08/2009 23:38

daftpunk · 15/08/2009 23:40

haggis, i thought it was you but didn't wanna out you..

are you ok ?

HaggisNeepsnTatties · 15/08/2009 23:42

Am good. Left last night as there were a few mental threads....one complete nutter was having a right go, but turns out he/she was a troll....gave as good as I got though!

Have you written your witty review of EE yet??

Aitchiswaitingforalegalopinion · 15/08/2009 23:42

how's that posturing? it's the opposite. if someone's saying they're lying they should just say it and have done.

beanieb · 15/08/2009 23:43

I guess so Aitch, I just get irritated by terms and conditions which actually aren't worth the paper screen they are written on.

Is just sad when people get hurt by this kind of thing. Am guessing the extra advertising which comes as a result of the extra exposure and publicity is lining someone's pocket very nicely indeed.

MN is of course, like so many other places on the internet, a business; a profit seeking one at that. Not kidding myself that MN is here primarily to give support and help to those in need.
