No problem. Carry on disagreeing with me though. That's fine

morning paper you are doing it again..stop using extreme examples of racism such as BNP to justify your over sensitivity to far lesser statements on mn. It muddies the water completely.

There are plenty of jews and non-jews who think that that orthodox couple are plain wrong. You are looking for a fight on this site by picking on the language an vocab used and seeing a anti-semite under each bush. It is not a happy way to live your life.

It also prevents ordinary nice people from debating a relevant issue in case they are called a nazi.

OlympedeGouges · 17/06/2009 17:52

Here are two issues, both of which I feel uncertain about.

Are people [on MN I mean] ruder and more aggressive towards Jewish people and their beliefs than towards other people of faith?
Tbh, I'm not sure that is true. I have been on some pretty aggressive threads about christianity, where all Christians, or all catholics at least, have been repeatedly accused of being complicit in child abuse. Christians are often accused here of being thick, arrogant, etc. However, are people more restrained and more careful when they talk about Muslim issues? I don't know. Maybe.

The second issue is, should we always be mindful, when talking about Jewish issues [of which we know little about] of the recent terrible history that still resonates in many Jewish familes who have lost so many relatives? Perhaps we should. I don't think this is patronising, I think it is a basic level of decency, even if you abhor all religion. I'm not talking about not disagreeing, I'm just talking about taking the level of hurt and shock palpable here on board and learning something from it.

... absolutely... and that Andrew Brons chap is Not Like Us... and the thousands of people who voted for him to represent them are Not Like Us... and the people that think Orthodox Jews should 'fuck themselves' are Not Like Us.. oh no, they ARE like us...

Where are we drawing the line again?

FlappyTheBat · 17/06/2009 18:04

MP, please refrain from implying that people on this thread are like nazis.

some people here might just have lost relatives fighting them.

lil · 17/06/2009 18:06

my god mp you really do choose to see nazis everywhere don't you.

I will rewrite that last statement so that it doesn't trigger any pranoia...

"It also prevents -ordinary- non anti-semitic, nice people from debating a relevant issue in case they are called a nazi."

lil, you are stopping debate by calling people like me intolerant , pomopous and over sensitive

it is hard to debate, when you know the other person has no repsect for your views or opinion

where do we draw the line? are the people telling jews to 'go fuck themselves' not anti semtitic, because they would say that to anyone of any religion? how is that better or even acecptable?

lil · 17/06/2009 18:10

..and well done for killing this very interesting thread by turning into a personal diatribe.

HelloBeastie · 17/06/2009 18:13

Yes, some people are anti-semitic. I think we can take as a given that the BNP are.

However.

If we restarted the thread from the beginning, and replaced 'Orthodox Jewish' with 'Jehovah's Witnesses' or 'Scientologists', do you really think any of the comments would have been different?

donnie · 17/06/2009 18:14

this thread is ridiculous now. I wondered how long it would take for it to descend into a bunfight about semitism and anti semitism. How reassuringly quick it was.

lil · 17/06/2009 18:14

lulu the fact that they say "go fuck themselves" can be applied to them, the couple and their views. The fact that some jews automatically see that as dissing the whole jewish race is...well over sensitive and intolerant.

Just because someone is jewish doesn't make them immune from verbal attack.

lil · 17/06/2009 18:16

totally, hellobeastie.

Lulumama · 17/06/2009 18:17

no, it doesn;t, but it does not mean that i am not allowed to take offence at that statement, and all the other rather nasty words directed towards the couple and jews on the whole

i think it shows how intolerant people really are, whilst claiming to be open minded and liberal

Lulumama · 17/06/2009 18:18

maybe they wouldn't have been , beastie, BUT I don';t think that level of rude intolerance towards any religious group is ok

just because someone would say it about another religious group,. does not make it any less offensive to the group it is being directed at in this instsance

and i am not allowed to be offended, as i am too sensitive

maybe it's time to drop this now and start discussing the fact that the Irish in Belfast are kicking the shit out of the Romanian community there. That should provide some nice fuel. For the whole racist angle, I mean.

If I say 'go fuck yourself' to a taxi driver from milton keynes does that mean everyone in milton keynes can claim offence or just taxi drivers?
