lil, im' still waiting for a response to my comments...

GetOrfMoiLand · 17/06/2009 17:19

And it is not money grabbing to claim £5K. They are claiming at as compensation for all teh time taken to sort this issue out, I would imagine.

lil · 17/06/2009 17:22

lulumama, since neither of us will be allowed to hear a rabbinic debate we'll have to pass on the language they use - BUT one can be rude and emotional without meaning to be antisemitic, that's my point. The Jews that shout 'nazi' and 'antisemite' because someone is using their own emotive language, sound pompous and irrational and surely increase anti-semitism.

donnie · 17/06/2009 17:24

fabulous thread for all sorts of reasons!

from Dorset to the holocaust in a few minutes. Priceless.

FlappyTheBat · 17/06/2009 17:26

Hindu, Islam, Christianity, Judaism have all been around for a very long time, longer than:

Electricty, cars, modern clothes etc.

So who and why decides that something modern can't be used in the name of religious observance?

Anyway, according to a church that I have had some dealings with in the past, we are all sinners and will spend eternity in hell, so it doesn't really matter what we do!

Not being able to cook, watch television, go for a walk, buy a sunday newspaper, fly a kite were some of the rules I had to live by for a while.
Getting your hair cut if your were a female was frowned upon as was wearing 'the Trouser".

Yet, if you lived as you were supposed to, you would still go to hell.

I wonder why I don't go to church any longer?

Lulumama · 17/06/2009 17:27

so it is ok to be rude about jews and their beliefs but it;s not anti semitic?

have heard rabbis talking about issues, never heard a rabbi tell anyone to 'go f*ck themselves'

i don;t believe i called anyone a nazi, just rather horrified at the language used, nor have i called anyone anti semitic

it is very rude of you to presume that my feelings are irrelevant, taht as a jewish person, it does not matter if i find this offensive, as it is 'just a debate' that if i dare protest , i am pompous?

where is the tolerance for my side of the debate

and if it was applied to any other minority group and their beliefs, i think the repsonse would have been v v different.

onagar · 17/06/2009 17:27

Bleh says "To answer GrandadOnagar's repeated calls for Jews to kill each other over religious differences"

Really? which thread was that in? (note I have changed my name back to onagar now the 'MEN' nonsense is over)

GetOrfMoiLand says "Can you imagine that if someone posted about, say, a muslim requesting Halal meat to be served in a canteen"

Well you must not have been paying attention since hallal meat came up and I posted myself that it would be wrong to insist on a whole school using hallal when some might object to animals being killed cruelly.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I will stick to equality and not extra rights for major organised religions.

Gorionine · 17/06/2009 17:30

GetOrfMoiLand, as a Muslim in the Uk I can tll you that the sort of comments you mention about halal meat etc.. are heard everyday! I do not myself think it is not of racisme, I just think it is very hard for people to understand how important to me it that my DCs do not eat gelatine or to this Jewish couple to wish not to be themseves part of switching a light on when they are not supposed to do so. I can understand why people could find it stupid in a way, because it is no concern for them, but for people who are practising their religion, it can become such a big issue it actually stops you from leading a normal life because your conscience is tormenting you constantly and belive me it is not a fun place to be.

I think the issue in the OP could be easily solved, just by installing a switch that actually gives a choice to the building's inhabitant to wether they want to turn the light on themselves or not. It will make a very big positive difference to this couple without being too much trouble for thir neighbours, especially if this couple has initially offered to pay for the cost of replacing the switches.

I am a slow typer so probably x-posted quite a bit but I think it needed saying.

lil · 17/06/2009 17:32

yes that old favourite, its ok to question your own religion, but not other peoples...I just can't agree with that. I have a view about lots of things and I don't see why I cant voice them, just incase I'm called anti-muslim or whatever.

or to put it another way..I do not think that switching on a light (intentionally or otherwise) makes you a holier person. its a nonsensical observation. I am no more thinking about god in that split second than I was 10 mins ago in my unlit room doing un'work' things.

Do you see.. its what you think that counts..

growing up can you really not see the difference betwen Nick griffiths and the mums on this site?

that's scary.

Lulumama · 17/06/2009 17:37

but lil, that nonesensical observation is incredibly important to some people.

let's debate multiculturalism and the validiity of religious rights .. but when it becomes aggressive, rude , dismissive and patronising, i don't want a part of it

i have no issue with you discussing your views on Judaism, but the tone you are using is really nasty. as a Jew i find it offensive. yet for that i am deemed pompous and over senstivie and intolerant

taht is not debate , because i am not allowed to express what i feel, as you don;t think it is valid

so i shall bow out and let you carry on .

i do agree growingup. we over sensitive people really need to remember that we are just being silly. except, we're not, and the BNP are in the european parliament, whihc is scary.

Growingup, I am disagreeing with people holding a particular view on a subject. That can not be racism since the group is not a race. I know you will say "oh but jews are" but I am not disagreeing with jews, but a subset who hold this view.

I also frequently disagree with catholics who may or may not be italian and christians who are all sorts. Also Muslims who in case you don't know don't have to be arabic.

FlappyTheBat · 17/06/2009 17:39

That is because we have questioned something, I questioned my own religion in the same way as some of their beliefs contradicted what I believed in personally.

It is a sad day when we are unable to have a debate because we are construed as being racist.

Think it is time this thread was pulled as it is not going to improve and will only degenerate into a slanging match.

growingup. I have never used that expression. I think you may have mixed up two posts there. I've done that when posting in a rush too.

morningpaper · 17/06/2009 17:44

Just out of interest, one of the BNP Euro MPs is Andrew Brons

This is what he says about bombing synagogues:
"On This subject I have a dual view, in that I realise that he is well intentioned, I feel that our public image may suffer considerable damage as a result of these activities. I am however open to correction on this point."

He was convicted in 1984 for shouting "Death to Jews" to members of the public in Leeds.
