Why poor child?

2chocolateshoes · 30/03/2009 11:28

I just can't help feeling the child is just a trophy

belgo - because last I read the child has a grandmother who is alive wants to look after the child.

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 30/03/2009 11:29

Yes because the girl will be so much better staying in Malawi living in poverty .....NOT!
Strange thread chocolate shoes.

I heard that the grandmother was opposing the adoption.

Nabster · 30/03/2009 11:30

She will be allowed to adopt because of who she is .

I don't agree with it though. The girl has family, would be a lot better if Madonna cared that much she gave some of her huge fortune to enable their natural mothers to care for their children.

TheCrackFox · 30/03/2009 11:31

The child could stay in Malawi with her grandmother if Madonna gave her as little as £1000. That would be like me giving 50p to charity.

I think the child would be like a trophy to Madonna. It just seems so fake.

Stretch · 30/03/2009 11:31

I'd prefer to be in poverty with my family, than adopted into Madonna's world and be rich.

2chocolateshoes · 30/03/2009 11:32

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns I was suprised there wasn't a thread on it already.
I do feel for the child as she will just be farmed out to a nanny.

I honestly don't believe that the answer to child poverty in 3rd world countries is to take the children away from their family and culture - that's totally and utterly missing the point imo.

muffle · 30/03/2009 11:34

Yes it does seem this adoption is all about her - if she cared two hoots about what is best for an orphaned child, she would see that it would be better to help that child to stay with her blood relatives and in her own culture. She could "adopt" her and let her stay in situ for example if she cared that much.

Yes, poverty is terrible but I actually can't see that being adopted by madonna would be that great an alternative. You'd be rich, but that's not everything. And children of the rich and famous, especially if their privacy isn't guarded, often end up as train wrecks and that's even without losing their parents at a young age and being torn away from their surviving family and culture.

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 30/03/2009 11:35

I'm sure if it were as simple as giving a family some money and everything would be fine then she'd do it. I'm not a 'Madonna fan' btw. The thing is it's not always as cut and dried as the media would have you believe is it.
If it was a normal woman who was giving a child a home she would be applauded.

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 11:37

"I'm sure if it were as simple as giving a family some money and everything would be fine then she'd do it."

well actually child sponsorship has proved to be (generally) very successful in terms of helping individual children have better lives and education.

muffle · 30/03/2009 11:37

And I actually rather doubt that a single mother with 3 kids and a job that takes her away from them for a lot of the time, a string of overlapping lovers, and extreme food obsessions which she imposes on her kids, would be considered fit to adopt in any normal scenario.

TotalChaos · 30/03/2009 11:37

agree with FAQ and Muffle.

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 30/03/2009 11:38

God you bunch of Madonna bashers!!

VinegarTitsTheVirginNun · 30/03/2009 11:38

Why is the child being put up for adoption in the first place if she has a materanal GM? and if the mother died in child birth who has been looking after her for the last 4 yrs?

I think there is probably mor to it than what the papers tell you, i dont think Madonna just popped over to Malawi and picked a random child, the child most have been on some sort of adoption list

muffle · 30/03/2009 11:39

Her selection criteria really puzzle me too. There are orphaned children in many places with no one to care for them at all, living out their lives alone in grim orphanages, eg in romania and elsewhere. Why does she choose to fight a battle for a child who has living relatives - twice?

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 11:39

she's currently living in an orphanage as her mother died shortly after she was born. However there were reports the other day that the grandmoth claimed the orphanage would hand care over to her when the child reached 6yrs old.

2chocolateshoes · 30/03/2009 11:40

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns I feel the same way about AJ

GooseyLoosey · 30/03/2009 11:40

I feel slightly worried everytime I read that she wants "a sister for David". Does he not already have a sister and, for that matter, a brother. It suggests to me that she views her adopted child quite differently to her natural children.

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 11:42

that's a good point GL

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 30/03/2009 11:42

The thing is the child may have living relatives but they may not be capable/fit/healthy enough to look after her properly. I'm sure in this country there are lots of children up for adoption who have living relatives....they wouldnt automatically go to them though would they...it may not be appropriate. You cant really comment on adoption unless you know all the info which we dont.

VinegarTitsTheVirginNun · 30/03/2009 11:42

'Yes, poverty is terrible but I actually can't see that being adopted by madonna would be that great an alternative'

I think the alternative would be much better, for one, the child would have the chance to be properly educated as well as not living in poverty, i am not saying i think Madonna is some kind of 'earth mother' but to say that living in third world poverty would be a better alternative is mad
