It's the same vibe about adoption that nicole kidman gives off "I always wanted a child of my own" - how hurtful can you be?

SoupDreggon · 30/03/2009 11:43

Why would she not have gone straight to the grandmother?

SoupDreggon · 30/03/2009 11:44

Perhaps she meant a sister of the same ethnic background.

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 11:45

VT - that can be achieved by sponsoring the child - I used to sponsor a child (not currently able to due to my own finances). It cost me £18 a month, and for that Thea was educated, had her medical cares tended to and it was ensured that she was eating a decent diet of food.

muffle · 30/03/2009 11:46

We don't know how poor the child/family is, and if the grandmother wants to keep her, that counts for a lot - real love from someone she knows counts for a lot. Madonna herself isn't in a position to give a vulnerable adopted child consistent, reassuring love as she'll be frequently away. So it will be nannies - probably multiple ones who will change over time.

And as has been said, it's in Madonna's power to really help this child - by allowing her to stay where she is and not be poor.

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 30/03/2009 11:46

Exactly Soupdreg. There is a reason why she isnt already living with her relatives surely.

nancy75 · 30/03/2009 11:47

i dont know too much about this story, and i have some doubt over madonnas motives for the adoption but i also find it strange that both of these children were in an orphanage and as soon as a rich person wants to adopt them their real family starts to apear.

VinegarTitsTheVirginNun · 30/03/2009 11:48

Agree with what kidcreole said, the grandmother may not be capable of looking after a small child, and madonna may mean she wants a sister from the same ethinic background for david, the child would certainly have a much better life if she was adopted, whether it be by madonna or someone else more capable

surely better than spending the next 2 yrs in an orphange

Stretch · 30/03/2009 11:50

Agree FAQ. I think it's the image of "Oh, I'm saving a child!" when in reality the child would be better off staying put but being sponsored.

She could put her millions into building schools/hospitals and 'rescuing' hundreds of children.

Who did you do the sponsoring with FAQ. I would like to do that, but not sure who to trust.

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 11:54

I did it with Compassion - which as it happens is a very Christian based group (so not one to do if you're not keen on a "relgious" one ) - however from looking into it at the time most of the well known charities (World Vision, SOS Children's Villages (they by the way are incredible places - I visited a few while living in Zimbabwe), ActionAid, Plan-UK etc - all "do what they say on the tin" so to speak.

I actually chose Compassion because they encouraged you to go and visit your child (if you wanted to) whereas some of the others (can't remember which off-hand) discourage you from actually making such contact with them.

It was lovely receiving letters from her as she progressed in school . Hoping later this year I'll be able to rejiggle finances and start sponsoring again.

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 30/03/2009 11:54

Maybe she actually wants another child and isnt just doing it to save a child. In which case giving the family money to survive wouldnt really come into it. for example if i wanted to adopt a child I wouldnt be thinking about how I could help the biological family financially so that the child could stay with them.....that would defeat the object.

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 11:57

well if she just wants another child why go abroad to do it?

Pawslikepaddington · 30/03/2009 11:58

As others have said-surely she would be better off spending the money she would spend on nannies/clothes/food fetishes for the child on building a well stocked, well staffed orphanage, an AIDS clinic and a free hospital.

muffle · 30/03/2009 11:58

Yes there are many genuinely parentless children to choose from everywhere.

MintyyAeroEgg · 30/03/2009 12:00

It makes me very uneasy, too. She is used to having anything she wants, and this time what she wants is a little girl from Malawi. I think it is a sorry situation tbh.

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 12:00

and now I must leave this enthralling thread to go and attend my Work Focussed Interview

JaiHoYouaremydestiny · 30/03/2009 12:05

madonna is doing a good thing...she has money, why shouldn't she give a poor child a better future? ...you're too simplistic 2shoes

2chocolateshoes · 30/03/2009 12:07

money yes, oh good,
but love? the care this child will need to settle in?

OP posts:
JaiHoYouaremydestiny · 30/03/2009 12:11

how do you know madonna wont love that child as much, if not more, than the childs g/m..or any other family member? do you personally know madonna....that child has won the lottery as far as i'm concerned...

2chocolateshoes · 30/03/2009 12:14

of course I don't, but that doesn't mean I can't be interested.

OP posts:
Nabster · 30/03/2009 12:16

Looking at how much she is away, I do not think this is a good move for the child. She is buying a child imo and only getting her (if she does) because of who she is.

FAQinglovely · 30/03/2009 12:17

but in your post you indiciated it was the money that was going to give the child a better life - not the love.

tiggerlovestobounce · 30/03/2009 12:18

Madonna has given money to help children in Malawi, she started a charity (Raising Malawi).

FairLadyRantALot · 30/03/2009 12:27

as Nancy says, how odd that as soon as a Madonna appears suddenly a relative appears, too...why are children held in orphanages if relatives are there to look after them....why would the grandma have to wait till teh girl is 6....it doens't really ring true...

and as kidcreole said, the idea that madonna would purely adopt a child to do some good is ridiculous, she wants to adopt because she wants another child (and I suppose she wants to give the other adopted child a sibling from teh same background, I would think), in that she is no more selfish than any of us....no matter if we have biological or adopted children....we want children because it's something we want....surely...

Nancy66 · 30/03/2009 12:27

This whole episode makes me very uncomfortable. Madonna is permanently on tour and away from home, she is in the throws of a very bitter divorce and devoted to a very dodgy and questionable religion - which she'll no doubt make her kids join.

It all smacks of some shallow Hollywood 'who can adopt the most black babies' competition.

Yes the little girl will get a great education and no end of designer clothes but taking children away from their family, friends and culture is not the way forward.

The litle girl is 4 - not a baby - can you imagine how traumatic that is going to be for her? Removed from everything she knows and introduced to a world of nannies and macrobiotic chefs?

It should never be allowed and it never would be allowed if she wasn't rich and famous.
