What do you think about celebs looking brilliant days after giving birth?

Apparently the papers are full of pics of Victoria Beckham looking amazing today. I've got to go on a radio station and spout about pressure on new mums to get back in shape etc. etc. (being a talking head is occasionally part of my day job). Happy to do that, but thought I'd ask you guys for your opinions. I was going to say something about how depressing it is that some celebs feel the need to hide away for months until they can emerge, looking like their pre-pregnancy selves. And that the rest of us, who can't afford personal trainers and dietitians, feel we've achieved something if we manage to get dressed when we are coping with a newborn, let alone looking fit for the paparazzi!

Catherine Zeta Jones?

Heard an interview on the radio with some Spanish bloke defending their paparazzi. He reckoned that David came out of the hospital, smiled and gave a nice interview. Victoria came out hidden behind a blanket until she got back to what she was happy with. Seems a bit sad to have to do that. And also perpetuates the myth that it is easy.

sansouci · 28/03/2005 22:08

Yeah, it's Catherine. I was sort of being facetious, sort of being my usual scatty self.

sykes · 28/03/2005 22:10

Ask them some seriuos questioncks, I write and it pisses me off the pandering to "stars" who aren't who have tummy tucksd, etc ,etc, and whatever .....

mancmum · 28/03/2005 22:12

totally agree with bubble -= have never thought that posh spice looks anything admirable... she has the most fake smile ... all she is is very skiny with expensive clothes... no natural style or beauty at all...

I personally think the best a woman ever does is when she gives that smile just after giving birth... you have all seen it -- that flowing huge smile of 'I have it all' - total pure and utter joy in the face of pain exhaustion etc... posh never has that...

edam · 28/03/2005 22:13

thanks for all the input - I know this is the way she makes a living, by her image. But I think it's really sad that anyone feels they have to hide away when they are heavily pregnant or a new mum for fear of not looking good enough.
Mind you, I managed to scoff most of ds's Easter eggs so I'm clearly not on VB's wavelength, at all

never mind what she looks like, as I understand it (and was talking to a friend who stayed in the same hotel as them in Manchester) she didn't have the baby with her at the weekend - I could be wrong.

What kind of message does that send out

overseas trip with their husbands?

suzywong · 29/03/2005 01:27

going back to work is not the issue, going out of the country is, IMO

wasn't aware she was on the England Team

Guess I must be a bit more daring in my old age

I feel a bit sorry for VB actually. Sorry, I know it's not what you're asking Edam

She can't do anything right: her husband has an affair, it's her fault apparently. She has a c section (and NO-ONE knows for sure why) and she's 'too posh to push' - nice convenient word there. If she looks great she's putting us all under pressure, if she looks shite, well, maybe she deserves her husband to play away again, why can't she make more effort fgs! I know this hasn't been said but I bet it would be. The press get Polly Filler out to have a go at her whatever happens. it's all so misogynistic isn't it? I think we all know the life of a celeb and esp one with vb's money is so far removed from ours that if she appears looking great we KNOW it took a lot of work and money and doesn't have anything to do with us normal mums living in the real world. I don't think she can win.

Keane · 29/03/2005 08:37

they have a thinner body double to put in press appearences

spinelli · 29/03/2005 08:41

going on a jaunt abroad when your baby is only 5 weeks old is a bit pathetic. Talk about self centered. But then she was constantly abroad when romeo was born...at least that was work..making her "rap album".

crunchie · 29/03/2005 09:52

Hold on a minute, How do we know where her baby is? She went to support her husband playing football (and if she hadn't she would have got flak) and for what anyone knows the baby could have been with her mum at the hotel or somewhere close. Perhaps she realsied the baby would be photographed if she had him with her and didn't want that.

Personally I may not have a huge amount of time for VB, but I do think she maybe one of these rate women who lose weight quickly after having a baby. 5 weeks after I had mine I had lost a stone (I still had 2 1/2 to go though!) plus the baby weight - make that 1.5 stone. So if you put on 2 stone, you could very easily be around 1/2 stone left 5 or 6 weeks after the birth without ridiculos diets.

Also the C-section thing. She had Brooklyn by c-section because (I understand) he was breech. No-one can blame her for that. She had Romeo by c-section as we all know, probably becasue once you have had one scetion a lot of people advise you to have another (I know I was advised this). Once you have had 2 sections it is rare to have a virginal birth, so what is the problem.

Personally I do feel under some pressure to lose weight after having babies, but I am not sure if this is actually the celebs fault or the fault of the media? TBH if the celebs have photos of them looking c**p after the birth they would never live it down - or so they believe. Now is it their 'fault' or our 'fault' who seem to have an insatiable appitite for celeb. I am not saying 'our' as in all MN, but the general public. It is all weel and good getting on a hobby horse about it, but the fastest growing area of womens magazines are the 'celeb' titles with the most 'OH MY GOD' type photos. I am sorry, it is the fault of us who want to read Heat, Closer, OK, Now, Reveal, etc etc who want to see pics of celebs flabby bums, or spotty faces who have created a market for all of this. VB, Liz Hurley etc are nothing without their image, hence we the PUBLIC are in fact forcing them to do this. And then of course critising them for it.

motherinferior · 29/03/2005 10:05

I felt enormously embarrassed by my post baby body (and come to that my pregnancy one too). There are people - principally ex-boyfriends, admittedly - that I wouldn't meet; I obsessively monitored every other new-ish mother's body and whether she could fit into her jeans; and I felt just awful. And yes, every damn pic I saw of a celeb swanning about looking fabulous made me feel worse.

motherinferior · 29/03/2005 10:05

It felt like my fault that I was so huge and wobbly.

motherinferior · 29/03/2005 10:10

And I never looked glowing or triumphant. I looked fat, knackered and sad. For months and months and months.

Caligula · 29/03/2005 10:11

MI I still do!

Newbarnsleygirlsinsaneknickers · 29/03/2005 10:12

The pictures I have seen of celebs that pose outside the hospitals after they have had they're babies always look great.

I cannot believe the likes of Victoria Beckham would lock herself away until she got her pre- baby body back.

However saying that I read in a mag yesterday how she was doing this and at the bottom of the article it said
"Relax Victoria, no one expects you to look perfect"
This was from a magazine that had a circle of shame embarrassing pictures and have countless photos of celebs looking not at their best.

northerner · 29/03/2005 10:21

VB is the woman we all just love to hate. We have never seen a piccie of her laeving the hospital after just goving birth so we don't know how rough she looks. She does make sure there are no piccies of her, until she's ready to face the world in her tight jeans, high heels and full make up.

I think if we did see a piccie of her dressed down, with no make up, in her trakkie bottoms taking her boys to the park it would do her image the world of good actually. And we might warm to her a bit more.

It really can't be natural can it to look that good 5 weeks post birth? She had no tum and no lard arse. And if it does just happen naturally to her than all I can say is life's not fair!

I do however feel that is not natural and she has been on a major diet to achieve this look.

Caligula · 29/03/2005 10:24

Oh I just can't stand the hypocrisy of these magazines which on one page slag someone off for caring too much about what they look like and on the next page slag them off for having enough body fat to menstruate.

But tbh I have never understood why other women buy these crap magazines and devour the horrible mysogynist comment so enthusiastically. It has never occurred to me that a good use of my time is to read about how X celebrity is letting herself go. So what? Why is it my place to comment on that, any more than it would be for VB/Kate Winslett/ insert celebrity name here, to comment on what my body looks like? I find the whole of the celeb culture/ body comment thing quite bewildering and depressing, tbh.

motherinferior · 29/03/2005 10:26

But Caligula, you are clearly sane and balanced. Some of us are not .

I honestly did look at everyone with a jaded and puffy eye, for months.

vickiyumyum · 29/03/2005 10:35

i thinki that one of the major reasons so many people are so negative about VB is that she is so damn secretive. we all know that if you want to become famous it comes at an unfortunate price, and that if you are prepared to pay this price you are asking for all that you get. kind of like a pact with the devil!
VB constantly stays silent on issues, never denying or confirming, e.g boob jobs, DB's affair, reason why brooklyn was born by cs. if she just came out and said yes i've had a boob job so what. yes david had an affair, but i've forgiven him and wre trying to work it out etc etc, then i'm sure that the public would have far more empathy and compassion for her, but at the moment people only see her hiding behind her sunglasses and make assumtpions.
so VB open up or at least make some comment about your life other that trying to make out that your a victim of the media.
