Anyway everyone, can we talk about her frickin scary beliefs now? Can you imagine that there are people out there who think that a girl raped by her father should be denied an abortion? Terrifying.

anything that causes the republicans not to win is cool
I still worry that her religious beliefs are seen as a positive thing in the US and that scares me shitless. Esp since McCain chose her for this possibly
Nuttier than a squirrel on hazelnut binge store

Do you think McCain really knew what he was getting into here, or was it just a case of 'Quick grab a woman to make capital out of the Hillary situation'? I suspect the latter. I just don't buy that he knew much about her at all.

Her poor daughter. Abstinence based sex education no access to abortion and the answer to pregnancy is marry him.

Sexism?!

Plueese. She's a freak of nature. Not a woman at all, but a Manwo. Thatcher was one too; anatomically a woman but who then ashews her gender (as she herself feels it denotes weakness) in favour of resembling a male - any male too, not even good ones. Twats preferably.

Did anyone else hear the interview with McCain's spokesperson on PM on R4 this afternoon?

at first i thought mccain had made a huge error choosing Palin, however from things i have read in various papers today it seems she may have made him more popular. aparently his campaign has recieved $10million in extra donations from those quite far to the right, who didnt think mccain was conservative enough, and she has been praised by quite a few fundamental church leaders over doing the 'right thing'and getting the daughter to keep the baby and get married rather than have an abortion.
this frightens me, the idea of mccain winning was bad, but palin is bloody awful. (btw i dont care if shes a woman her views are far too extreme for comfort)

I think that the views of Palin are awful but sadly I think that she willl win it for McCain, I really do. I think that there are far more Americans out there who hold views (perhaps privately rather than publically) that are nearer to hers than Obama.

I agree with Swedes, I feel that she was picked for her gender not necessarily her political acumen. However I also think that part of her appeal to voters may be the combination of her views and her gender.

If she uses her gender to achieve her ambitions is she still a victim of sexism? I don't think so.

Should we support her as a woman attempting to achieve high power even though the opinions that she holds regarding women (particularly access to abortion) are imo misogynistic? Tricky one, I'm tempted to say yes as someone who has no influence/vote on whether or not she achieves her ambitions and even if I were American I think that I would vote for opinions that matched mine rather than a woman per se.

There was a very good article by Alice Miles in yesterday's Times.

how scary is that video??
what did they mean by saying 'we[alaska] are a refuge state and in the last days everyone will be coming to alaska from the lower 42 states' and this church better be ready to do whatever they do to/for them...? they are talking about the 'last days' being sometime pretty soon, no? and these nutters are possibly going to be in power??

religion freaks me out. really. i am scared by shit like that.

If the Americans are stupid enough to vote for an anachronistic, geriatric relic and a gun toting, environomentally unfriendly, homophobic religious nutcase, then heaven help the world because the first thing that the warmongering duo will do is attack Iran.

The world does not need or want McCain or Palin.

Does her daughter really want to marry that boy (and does he really want to marry her?). I know she is pregnant but I would rather have an unplanned baby and be single than to be absolutely miserable in a marriage. It seems to me that they are being railroaded into because mommy might be the next VP.

Well as her mother is a gun-toting loon, a shotgun weddding is not surprising.

BloodySmartarse - one could argue that global warming will eventually drive everyone north (or south depending which side of the hemisphere you're on) so places like Alaska and Siberia really will be the last places habitable for the human race.

Why's it SUCH a big deal that she's got a Downs Syndrome baby?

How many other millions of USA parents have babies with Downs?!

Or is it because she was "oh so virtuous" in not aborting her baby because he wasn't "perfect" ?

I really REALLY dislike the fact she's making a big issue of that; she's a bit strange and I'm rather worried that the USA voters are being blinded by her "virtue" and not reading between the lines of what will happen if she gets the job

it seems to me they have the appeal they need to win, unfortunately

they don't seem to like each other but running mates seldom do, aren't they supposed to be different as to appeal to a wider demographic

staying away from personalities the idea of a creationist in the house saddens me greatly

Sarah Palin Joke of the week: Fox News: "She does know about international relations because she is up there in Alaska right next door to Russia."
Jon Stewart: "Alaska is also next to the North Pole so, obviously, she must also be friends with Santa."
