HOW FECKING DEPRESSING WAS THAT?

OP posts:
FattipuffsandThinnifers · 19/07/2008 22:24

Erm, I thought it was rather poignant, well-written and more interesting than some of the pointless celeb-driven slop masquerading as broadsheet journalism. Quite interesting delve into lost youth, learning lessons from past mistakes, irrational longings etc. Agree that it might not be that interesting if you don't know her though (not that I do know her), but even so, I enjoyed it. Obv in a minority though!

tigana · 19/07/2008 22:25

bit rubbish that.
"girl/woman makes several bad choices with sexual partners - and consumption of alcohol. Then stops drinking. And still sleeps with dickheads."

and the moral/lesson/twist/point is...?

ahundredtimes · 19/07/2008 22:36

I quite liked it too. I thought it was well-written. It made me smile in a rueful way. I liked the bit about the guy with no teeth lying on the ground in a cape and with a monocle. I am possibly v. easily pleased though.

iBundle · 19/07/2008 22:36

tmi tbh

Frizbe · 19/07/2008 22:42

Tigana, I think from the end of the article, she just maybe trying to point out she's had an epiphany, having ditched the dickhead whose still living with the mother of his child, whom she had been shagging alledgedly.

ahundredtimes · 19/07/2008 22:42

Well it was dark, but in a good way.

ahundredtimes · 19/07/2008 22:44

In an active self-loathing kind of way. Always room for active self-loathing imo.

MmeBovary · 19/07/2008 23:01

Why would you do this? Even I could remember their names!....i can't imagine that they would wnat to hear from me after 20+ years and have their thoughts about the realtionship published in the paper...!!!In fact even I don't want to know their thoughts.....

cadelaide · 19/07/2008 23:09

I think the reason the article is depressing is because it's so dispassionate.

cadelaide · 19/07/2008 23:11

I answered that like a schoolgirl didn't I?

I've been browsing DCs school workbooks today, can you tell?

WelliesAndPyjamas · 19/07/2008 23:12

David Walliams
Got to be

WelliesAndPyjamas · 19/07/2008 23:37

Just read it. What a pile of.
Did it really all get published?? There must be more interesting/funny/thought-provoking/important stuff they could have published.

nooka · 19/07/2008 23:41

I watched a TV programme a long time ago that did something like this, and it was very interesting watching someone relive their past and come to more of a understanding of how they got to where they were. It was very non voyeristic. This has something of that. She does seem to have been a very unhappy person.

Dynamicnanny · 20/07/2008 14:39

Weird article and yes depressing - not a fan of her as a journaist anyway

Ledodgy · 20/07/2008 14:43

PMSL Expat that was exactly my first thought. How the hell did she remember them all?

themoon66 · 20/07/2008 14:46

I clicked on the link, saw the pic and thought 'David Walliams in drag'. Then i noticed other MNers have thought the same.

EffiePerine · 20/07/2008 14:59

well it was depressing but at least it was well-written. And not sentimental.

I liked it and think she is a good writer, I usually miss most of the articles in the magazine and read this to the end. Why are women always so hard on other women? If the article had been written by a man in a reversed scenario it wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

ahundredtimes · 20/07/2008 15:32

Also I don't understand why something being depressing is a critical criteria? Sometimes when people react like this it smacks of either fear or envy, as though they think someone is just 'showing off'. It's very odd.

Or why it matters that she looks like David Walliams in drag?

What's all that about?

She writes well. She's fat and complicated and clearly rather clever. I'd never heard of her before this article.

beansprout · 20/07/2008 15:36

I know this woman and she really is as full of self loathing as it is possible to be. Very odd article because I don't think she is coming from a position of strength. Made for very uncomfortable reading.

ahundredtimes · 20/07/2008 15:39

She is, is she? Can I have a sticker?

Though mind you, you could see she was from a mile off. I thought it was quite dark and honest and uncomfortable too. I'm not sure why that's such a bad thing though.

bamboostalks · 20/07/2008 15:43

Made you think as well, she often writes puff pieces for the DM or pseudo investigations into cosmetic surgery, dating sites etc. I found it uncomfortable reading, quite painful but truthful and hopefully will see more from her in this style.

I was a bit surprised it was in the graun tbh - most of their stuff makes me want to poke my eyes out in a completely different way
