How much do you trust the BBC as a source of news?

My dh takes the BBC as gospel. I take it with a (large) pinch of salt, as I think it has baked-in biases. I value the BBC highly, and think we are lucky to have it, by the way.

I'm interested in how other people view the BBC's reporting.

OP posts:

I trust the BBC . They might make mistakes but I don’t think that they are particularly biased. What I particularly like them is how people I know on the right thing that they are a pit of left wing adgitators who clearly want to over throw the government and bring in sharia law and communism, whilst my somewhat left leaning daughter and her blue haired friends believe it to be a bastion of right wing reactionary prejudice that might as well be campaigning for the tories / reform. As something of a centrist, I think they tend to get things right most of the time and it’s hard being balanced in such a polarised world.

While I broadly agree with this, I have had some issues with some reporting of theirs.

What bias do you see OP?

Examples please.

ElonAteMyHamster · 07/10/2026 07:50

I trust them - they make mistakes but they’re the most trustworthy source of news we have.

The main thing I take issue with them on is their nauseating reporting of the royals - but that’s a minor point overall.

I also think they are accused of bias by left and right but actually more accountable and working towards a higher standard than most media.

I can't see how the BBC can survive but it will be a sad day when it goes.

MissyB1 · 07/10/2026 07:53

I dont dislike it and I wouldn't want to see it go. However I prefer to watch Channel 4 for news reports.

MotherofPufflings · 07/10/2026 07:53

I trust the BBC more than privately owned news organisations to be impartial. I have heard as many people complaining that they are left wing as say they are right wing to think that they're probably doing a fairly good job at being unbiased. It's impossible to get it right all the time though.

When you look at the way some media twists things to fit an ideological point of view then the BBC are a million times better.

Yes agreed. There was a recent thread where the OP
said the BBC’s reporting of the Israel Gaza conflict was biased towards the Palestinians. However, both sides have accused them of bias!

Shedmistress · 07/10/2026 07:57

There's a reason George Orwell wrote 1984 after working at the BBC.

Their own 'misinformation/disinformation' department was run by someone who faked their CV.

Trying looking at people who have left rather than the ones that are still there and see what they say about it.

DelphiniumBlue · 07/10/2026 07:58

I don’t think they are investigative enough, and I think there are choices made over what to report and what to leave out which can be questionable.

rooksewfar · 07/10/2026 07:58

I trust the BBC. Sure, they make mistakes occasionally but overall they are well balanced and trustworthy

fabricstash · 07/10/2026 08:02

I used to trust the bbc but now I feel the investigation side has dwindled and they are generally pushing an agenda - and not in a good way. Some areas of the bbc are better than others

I agree with this too. Sometimes there will be a really peculiar news item as one of the top stories while other stories are way down the page. I had to scroll all the way to the bottom yesterday to see the GPs murder reported while the biggest puzzle game ever was before it!

ChocoChocoLatte · 07/10/2026 08:13

They’re an absolute joke regarding anything here in Scotland and have just cancelled BBC Scotland to become online only in a bid to save costs…….

I trust the BBC. Their verification of stories and in depth verification process is reassuring.

LadyBlueberry · 07/10/2026 08:17

If you agree with the BBC agenda-and it does have one- then you will trust it.

If you don't agree with their agenda, their picking and choosing of stories and the way they are presented, then you won't trust them.

An increasing number is in this latter group-hence the crisis about the licence fee,

I am in the latter group and believe the BBC news should be a subscription service.

Maybe they could offer Guardian subscribers a bundle discount, as this would appeal to their audience and would be a win win for both of them.

BaffledAndBemusedToo · 07/10/2026 08:22

I no longer use them as a news source, mainly because of what they don’t cover or don’t say, so I view their content as a form of lying by omission. They are just crowd control at this point.
It’s sad. I used to love the BBC.

BrinkWomanship · 07/10/2026 08:23

I don’t trust it at all. Huge bias. Great tv programming though.

Well said.

LezUlez · 07/10/2026 08:25

So many people who judge the BBC only look at a small portion of their news output.
I particularly find the regional news on TV and online very valuable, as the local newspapers in my area have completely quit the scene as regards actual newsgathering.
I also like Newswatch on Saturday, where viewers can challenge reports they've seen. I will admit that sometimes the producers' responses are arrogant, but hopefully behind closed doors note is being taken.

I liked the guy who was investigating the fake shops on the High Street. That is investigative journalism.

There are things on BBC breakfast that make me cringe; however it is a magazine programme, not 100% news.

Ninetwenty · 07/10/2026 08:27

I think it has some biases, but actually is far more right wing than the "right" will accept.

I trust it not to put out absolute untruths and to have fact checked stories, even if there is some bias in the way they are reported. There isn't any news media on earth that doesn't do that, and they are better than most at an attempt at being neutral imo.

OffWith · 07/10/2026 08:29

Before all the trans madness I genuinely used to trust them.

Unfortunately it became clear they had an agenda they were willing to push at the expense of the truth, facts and investigative journalism.

Once you see it, it can't be unseen. I stopped paying the licence after that.

This is exactly the same for me.
I value it, would be upset to see it go ( and enjoy Radio 4 ( by and large), but for really robust, measured, excellent news, its Channel 4 news for me.
