How much do you trust the BBC as a source of news?

My dh takes the BBC as gospel. I take it with a (large) pinch of salt, as I think it has baked-in biases. I value the BBC highly, and think we are lucky to have it, by the way.

I'm interested in how other people view the BBC's reporting.

If you agree with the BBC agenda-and it does have one- then you will trust it.

If you don't agree with their agenda, their picking and choosing of stories and the way they are presented, then you won't trust them.

An increasing number is in this latter group-hence the crisis about the licence fee,

I am in the latter group and believe the BBC news should be a subscription service.

Maybe they could offer Guardian subscribers a bundle discount, as this would appeal to their audience and would be a win win for both of them.

I think this pretty much sums up how I feel.

And if you can't see the agenda-again it's because it aligns with yours.

Not at all since the Trump speech "mistakes" and that they have trouble knowing what a man looks like. Not just once, but consistently. These are major biases. Not to mention Jimmy Saville - should we keep overlooking that?

Now I make sure to get a variety of news sources before having any kind of reaction.

There's a reason George Orwell wrote 1984 after working at the BBC.

Their own 'misinformation/disinformation' department was run by someone who faked their CV.

Trying looking at people who have left rather than the ones that are still there and see what they say about it.

You really think things are just the same as they were in 1948?

LadyChilli · 07/10/2026 08:35

There are definitely baked in biases; it is very England centric and the amount of coverage that Reform were given when they were a minor challenging party surely helped them rise to the threat they are now. I also hate the way they often use the word "family" when they mean "household". The two words are not interchangeable and using them as such means reports are not fully accurate.

That said, their fact checking is very scrupulous and there have been some investigative articles recently that have been valuable.

Tryagain26 · 07/10/2026 08:35

I trust it and channel 4 more than any other news outlet

fmlnotagain · 07/10/2026 08:36

Don’t know how anyone can say they trust them after what they did with trumps speech. Contradicting yourself there

BrinkWomanship · 07/10/2026 08:23

I don’t trust it at all. Huge bias. Great tv programming though.

Out of interest can you name a less biased news source?
I don't think they are perfect but are angels compared to most other sources.

They make mistakes, a few terrible ones. But on the whole they try very hard to be factual.

Northernrunnerwife · 07/10/2026 08:39

Easily the most trustworthy news provider in the UK, if not globally.

The usual cranks, like Reform and the Greens, will dispute this but I think everyone can see their agenda from a mile away.

VointofPiew · 07/10/2026 08:40

I trust all news sources about as much as each other. I'm just looking for the facts, not how to think about what has happened.

Cantonet · 07/10/2026 08:40

I used to trust the BBC implicitly but no longer do so.
The mis-reporting of the Palestinian situation, as opposed to the rampant bias towards the Israeli point of view has meant I now view BBC reporting as mostly fiction. This bias has been reported from within the BBC.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/10/2026 08:41

I don't think the BBC is perfect and they don't get everything right all of the time, but overall, I think they operate to much higher standards than most news sources. I think Channel 4 news is very good as well.

For those who find that they are not trustworthy, can I ask which news sources you trust over and above the BBC?

Frikadelle · 07/10/2026 08:42

The right complain that it has a left bias. The left complain it has a right bias. This reassures me somewhat.

IChooseWine · 07/10/2026 08:44

Is the BBC unbiased? Let's ask a drag queen..

Newbutoldfather · 07/10/2026 08:45

I think the BBC is pretty good for news. It is very flabby, though, due to its huge guaranteed income.

I don’t think it is that biased, although I think the Middle East stuff is a bit dodgy.

It has its biases but I don’t think that a perfectly unbiased news service can exist, especially if you include amount of coverage and omissions as well as actual bias within programs/articles.

If you want and care enough about a true picture, you have to read multiple news services critically.

Vintlet · 07/10/2026 08:17

I trust the BBC. Their verification of stories and in depth verification process is reassuring.

It really isn't. Rapists are described as women and last week they told us white women who don't paint their nails are racist. They were forced to take it down. They could tell me water was wet and I wouldn't belive them,

Peacock22 · 07/10/2026 08:51

Virtually all news outlets have in built bias. The issue is the BBC claims to have none when that is patently untrue.

It is noticeable on here that some say they trust the BBC and C4 which proves the earlier point that people trust sources that match their preferential biases.

Yes they are struggling due to this.

I also think they are accused of bias by left and right but actually more accountable and working towards a higher standard than most media.

I can't see how the BBC can survive but it will be a sad day when it goes.

All that.

I think the BBC care a lot about being neutral+truthful, and actually do try very hard to be neutral and truthful in their news reporting. The BBC are biased towards being intellectual, for sure. Plenty of people don't prefer an intellectual news source or even consider intellectualism to be unacceptable bias. There isn't a news source I prefer to BBC.

This is where I'm at too. Savile was covered up for decades.

I lost any last shreds of trust in them when they centred Fallon Fox's views in interviews on male participation in female sport. I made a formal complaint that FF had boasted about enjoying breaking a woman's skull, and shouldn't be given a platform on the BBC. The BBC (after I had to make a further complaint about them not responding to my complaint) then robustly defended interviewing him.

Some time after this he was interviewed again on the BBC. More people complained this time and the BBC finally said they were unaware of FF's previous comments. Which was of course a flat out lie. I don't trust them at all.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/10/2026 08:53

I know left wingers who maintain the BBC is a hotbed of right wing politics, and right wingers who believe it's run by communists.
I have Muslim friends who don't believe a word it says because of its Israeli bias, and Jewish friends who won't watch it because because it's completely 'pro-Pal'.
The BBC is shite if you want an echo chamber.
As a news service I don't think it does too badly.

VanCleefArpels · 07/10/2026 08:54

fabricstash · 07/10/2026 08:02

I used to trust the bbc but now I feel the investigation side has dwindled and they are generally pushing an agenda - and not in a good way. Some areas of the bbc are better than others

Which agenda?

Additup · 07/10/2026 08:55

I used to trust the BBC as a source of news implicitly until covid happened. The way that was reported definitely made me view it in a different light. I also think they pick and choose which items to report in a biased way which I didn't really appreciate until I saw how they reported covid.

If there was some sort of huge national emergency I wouldn't trust the BBC to be anything other than the governments mouthpiece.

I try and read lots of different news sources as well as the BBC because they all have a bias/axe to grind and I think that's the best way to get a balanced view.

Ninetwenty · 07/10/2026 08:55

It gets accused of bias by the left and the right, so it must be doing something right?
