How much do you trust the BBC as a source of news?

My dh takes the BBC as gospel. I take it with a (large) pinch of salt, as I think it has baked-in biases. I value the BBC highly, and think we are lucky to have it, by the way.

I'm interested in how other people view the BBC's reporting.

Was Saville a mistake? Is knowing someone is a dirty pedo and saying nothing a mistake?

It was a "mistake" that lots of other institutions made too. It is beyond belief that he was allowed access to young girls in hospitals. He was supported by the Royal Family. But people raise it as if the BBC was uniquely blind to predatory abuse. It has always been rife in every institution and layer of society, but some people just become ardent defenders of women when it suits them politically. I believe that the BBC have learned from past scandals and developed robust procedures for calling out predatory behaviour. I'm not convinced that's always the case in the private sector.

Yes let the BBC run on subscription too, if it as good and non-biased as put below it’ll be fine.

There’s a lot of value in having news organisations that don’t need to rely on click bait and selling themselves, to keep operating. I think it’s a shame people don’t recognise that.

It doesn’t need to. You and others value its content already.

I generally trust the BBC for news, with the exception of the vox pops. Because they have to appear impartial they always have to show people from both sides of a debate, so they may as well not bother.

Justinthekitchen · 07/10/2026 14:33

BBC spread fear without proportionality during Covid. First they ignored, then they minimised the rape of 1,000's of British children across UK cities by the Pakistani rape gangs. They covered up Jimmy Saville. They employed far-left nut-jobs like Gary Lineker. They continue to foist their DEI agenda into almost every children's TV programme, and way over-represent ethnic minorities. They've only ever presented a one-sided and falsified view of the reasons why Russia went to war with Ukraine. They stuff question time audiences with predominantly left leaning voices (so that right leaning guests get a hard time). They attempt to link the supposed 'climate disaster' to any and all natural events, however tenuous (or downright false) the links may be.

In short, the BBC have become a bias mouthpiece of the UK government and their globalist masters. Filled with privileged left-leaning graduates with degrees from left-leaning universities. A propaganda organisation designed to subtly 'nudge', brainwash and control the British public in whichever direction the government of the time directs.

So no, I don't trust the BBC one iota, and as a result I stopped paying my licence fee a few years back. I'm not going to fund my own brainwashing, or the ongoing brainwashing of the British public. Once you see it, you can't go back.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/10/2026 14:57

I find them quite trustworthy, but do not depend on them as my sole news source.

GB "News" is obsessed with the BBC.😱

But everyone knew Savile was a dirty paedo and nobody did anything about it. The BBC weren’t unique in their culpability. It wasn’t reported anywhere.

Lifelover16 · 07/10/2026 15:29

No I don’t trust BBC at all
Jimmy Savile
Huw Edwards
Scott Mills

afaloren · 07/10/2026 15:42

I feel like right-wing people think the BBC have a left-wing bias and left-wing people think they have a right-wing bias which probably means they’re getting it about neutral overall.

borntobequiet · 07/10/2026 15:46

I cancelled my TV licence some time ago because of the BBC’s commitment to transgenderism, the lies it told and the agenda it pushed.

I found I could no longer trust it on anything. I get my news from a variety of alternative differing sources now.

They’re an absolute joke regarding anything here in Scotland and have just cancelled BBC Scotland to become online only in a bid to save costs…….

Why should one region of the UK have its own dedicated TV channel? There is no BBC Yorkshire.

ChocoChocoLatte · 07/10/2026 16:09

@Erin1975last I looked, Yorkshire wasn’t a country in its own right with a Population of over 5 million people……

Scotland isn't a country. It hasn't been since 1707. It has a chance to become one but decided against it.

If you want to compare a similar sized part of the UK then there is no BBC South West TV channel or BBC East Anglia either.

There is however another TV channel dedicated to Scotland - BBC Alba.

I feel like right-wing people think the BBC have a left-wing bias and left-wing people think they have a right-wing bias which probably means they’re getting it about neutral overall.

I used to be left leaning, with left leaning values, but I am afraid it became apparent during Covid that the left have become increasingly delusional, idealogical, and out of touch with reality. Add in an increasingly authoritarian left leaning government (Cons and Labour) and I feel that the left moved away from me, rather than me ever leaving the left. Now I suspect some of my views would be called far-right, but I don't ever recall changing my values. I guess the goal posts have simply been moved.

Part of this is social media, as the algorithm amplifies existing biases. But part is driven by the global NGO's, Foundations, Thinktanks, Not-for-Profits, the WEF, and the influential Philanthropic organisations used by billionaires to avoid tax, increase profits and buy power. These organisations promote certain narratives, and control our governments policy and what gets featured (or not featured) in our mainstream media.

Almost all of these organisations are stuffed full of left-leaning, well paid, well meaning, highly educated staff who simply can't relate to the concerns of the ordinary person in the street.

Cue the teeth gnashing and wailing of the upper middle class women in Piddington when they realise that 1,000+ sexually frustrated male migrants will be housed just a short walk down the road form their teenage daughters. But when the residents of working class towns and cities have complained for years that immigration had changed their towns beyond recognition, I suspect that the women of Piddington would have been the first to call them all 'racists'.

What bias do you see?

Who do you trust?

Laurmolonlabe · 07/10/2026 17:48

All news sources have bias, I think the BBC battles against bias more than many other sources do.

ChocoChocoLatte · 07/10/2026 18:40

@Erin1975 Good grief.

I'm inclined never to trust any source 100%, but BBC is up there with

i) Euronews
ii) Deutsche Welle (DW)
iii) Franceinfo

As regards trusted sources. It also depends on the subject matter, to be honest. Some outlets are more neutral than others. I'd trust CNN on American issues. DW is good for mainland European stuff, less so British.

Justinthekitchen · 07/10/2026 19:37

Whilst full of total 'clutching at straws' climate rubbish, at least the Guardian is open about it's left leaning bias. The BBC is also very left leaning, but it pretends to be impartial.

But as ever, “If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you do read the newspaper, you're misinformed”. Same applies to TV news.

The BBC these days is little more than a propaganda arm of the UK government.

So if you want unfiltered news that comes straight from the source, then Twitter (X) is the fastest and often the most accurate source. Or there are hundreds of independent news channels that focus on specific regions, issues or fields of knowledge.

Exposing the false narratives in the mainstream news is the reason why the UK and the EU are trying to heavily censor or restrict Twitter (X), and the reason why Elon bought it since in the US under Biden, the Democrats heavily restricted social media platforms so that they took down any negative news about the Covid vaccines, any criticism of the governments response to Covid, etc.

In essence public sourced news (Twitter/X) often disrupts the official narratives which is rather inconvenient to governments trying to hide the truth from their populations. Frequently, anything we are told is mis-information, is often a truth the government wishes to suppress.

TheRealSmurfette · 07/10/2026 20:05

LongTallTally · 07/10/2026 07:52

I also think they are accused of bias by left and right but actually more accountable and working towards a higher standard than most media.

I can't see how the BBC can survive but it will be a sad day when it goes.

Propaganda Machine it’s really not much else

Newbutoldfather · 07/10/2026 22:10

I wish someone who is saying the BBC has an agenda or calls it a propaganda machine would explain what the agenda is and what propaganda it spouts.
