Enid - yes because it is that easy. Wonder why so many people are overweight???

There's a lot of nonsense spoken about gastric band surgery. But it's hard work and it actually works for many people where dieting doesn't.

A dear friend had it having battled weight for most of her 60 years - it has revolutionised her life. In 50 years she tried everything else and failed and yet this has really helped her. Three years later she's still doing really well. What on earth is the problem with this?

I think that magazines and the tabloid press will tell you diet and exercise work and that's the "best" and "right" solution. Most obesity specialists, however, recognise that there are huge complexities in obesity and see that surgery has a part to play in the solution for some people.

The problem is, that does not fit into the Daily Mail message of "fat = bad" and you must "atone for your sins" and should not be allowed to "cheat". It's a more complex story than that and that's why the tabloid press struggle with it.

Margo - According to the newstory, she did release an exercise video (a Pilates one). I've never seen it, don't know when it was released, or whether it's aim is for general fitness or weight loss or a combination.

The story also quoted her laughing off rumours that she'd had liposuction, saying she'd lost her weight through 'hard work' and can 'wear her bikini with pride'.

schneebly · 02/06/2008 13:16

she was a guest on a Lynne Robinson Pilates DVD in 2003 - when she was quite big.

Kewcumber · 02/06/2008 22:58

I'd consider abdominal surgery and throwing up constantly at the beginning and never being able to eat a meal properly again pretty hard work.

Kewcumber · 02/06/2008 22:59

Pilates is exercise?! Doesn;t it burn about 3 caloris an hour (less than eating a Mars bar)?

mixedmama · 03/06/2008 14:25

I am disapointed in as much as I thought she was a great role model rather than c razy diet celebs.

But if it has made her feel good and so forth that is great, but i did buy an exercise bike last week on the back of it helped Fern. Good luck to her.

bit like daft Kate Winslet lying about having a no-intervention birth with her first when she had a section.

Pointless.

She advertised a diet food, the implication being that that foood was a significant factor in her weight loss- its wrong to lead people on when a bigger factor was the surgery she had.
She should have mentioned it,if shewas going to take the money.
