it's hypocritical if she gave a load of interviews extolling the virtues of losing weight with just diet and exercise.

I have a very good friend who works in the media.

I hate the way press hassle people into telling their stories when they don't want too, or else they will do it for them.

Maybe she wasn't allowed to tell the truth because of her Ryvita ad deal or something? Poor Fern.

She has said that her husband cooked low fat versions of her fave foods and she has been cycling not that she has had major surgery and done it the quick way.

Oh I am disappointed... I thought she had done it like me - through bloody grit and determination. (I have gone from a size 20 to a size 10). I was soooo proud of her and feel somewhat cheated....

Good for her is what i say! If she is happy and healthier for it, then it's not up to anyone else to judge!

yes, if it hadn't been for the press hassling to get stories, we'd never have any Freedom of Information Act, find out what MP expenses, really are, etc.

If she'd said 'mind your own business how I lost weight is my concern alone' the press would have known there was more to it and gone on and on at her.

If she'd said 'yes I had surgery' there would be a load of criticism and she'd have had to justify it every time someone asked her about it because people seem to have strong opinions about it.

I don't blame her for trotting out the bit about walking the dog, cycling and healthy eating. As another poster said, no doubt that was part of it anyway and those that needed to know ie family probably knew.

Maybe she was at her wits end about it, who knows. Whatever...it's a private matter I feel. I like her. She looks good and surely must be healthier for it.

I don't think having weight loss surgery is easy. If you crave food, you'll still crave it when your stomach is full, believe me.

I think we need to stop condoning some methods of weight loss whilst scorning others. I don't get why people feel ashamed of having surgery - is it thought of as cheating?

And if it was 2 years ago, how come it's only in the last 12 months she's lost so much weight?

But noww she has to justify it and she's been exposed as a liar. A lose lose situation.

Imo she doesn't have to justify anything to anyone. It's no one elses business.

Yes... but why not say 'I hate being this size, I am gonna have surgery, and let's hope it works...' rather than let people assume otherwise. When you are in the public eye, you earn the money and you pay the price of lack of privacy.

Because if she said she was having surgery then she would have recieved the reaction like on this thread. She can't win.

FWIW I love Fern Britton and part of me doesn't blame her for keeping quiet. I just felt an empathy with her when she lost all that weight. She looked exactly as I did when she was bigger but I am now a lot smaller than her! Indulge me for 30 seconds please (no gastric band here!)
