And she told us she lost 3 stone walking the dog and eating healthily.
Now is transpires that he had a gastric band fitted two year ago.

I agree with Earlybird.

MsDemeanor · 01/06/2008 16:57

poor woman. She just appears on your TV from time to time. Sheesh.
And she clearly DID lose the weight by eating healthily and taking exercise. A band doesn't double your metabolism or anything, nor does it take away your appetite or your feelings of hunger.
I honestly don't get how it hurts YOU if she preferred to keep some of her medical details private. It's not exactly like lying to get us into the Iraq war, is it?

MrsArchieTheInventor · 01/06/2008 16:59

I can't really comment on what was said and what wasn't said as I don't get to watch This Morning very often. It just makes me sad when the press relish in exposing women for being human after all. From what I've read today, it seems she didn't make it public knowkedge from the start as she didn't want other women to be influenced by her decision. I must say that as an obese woman myself the knowledge that she has had a band fitted would influence my decision to undergo the procedure.

maidamess · 01/06/2008 16:59

No one is saying it hurts us...we're just enjoying a gossip!

i feel sorry for fern, remember the pictures of ger in a bikini a couple of years ago, and how all the papers basically said look at this disgusting fat woman?

imo fern always looked lovely when she was heavier and she looks great now.
maybe if the press had been abit kinder to her before she would have felt more confident being honest about this?
maybe as she is just a tv presenter we shouldnt care how she looks or how she lost the weight and just let her get on with it?
poor woman cant win, doesnt loose weight she is a fatty, looses weight with help and she is a cheat.

piratecat · 01/06/2008 17:04

I like fern but I am really disappointed that she didn't let on.

No it's not my business, or anybody elses, but she has lost weight thru means of a gastric band, and NOT how she said.

I am perplexed, as to why she wouldn't admit it before now, or before when she was saying about eating healthily. She HAS duped us into believing that is how she did it.

I am amazed anyone thinks she hasn't been cagey, if it is in fact the truth that she had this surgery.

PortBlacksandResident · 01/06/2008 17:09

Surely having surgery so you can't eat as much when you're married to a famous pudding chef is like being married to Brad Pitt and having your bits sewn up!

misdee · 01/06/2008 17:11

i dont know how i feel about it tbh.

a bit gutted it wasnt all done the way she sai9d (but she has eaten healthily and cycled loads!)

a bit surprised really

and a bit happy for her, for admitting to herself, that she couldnt do it all herself so neededhelp and had the band fitted.

if i get to my mid-30's and still struggle with my food issues, then it is something i would consider.

Earlybird · 01/06/2008 17:12

Of course the fact that she's had the surgery doesn't hurt 'us' as members of the public. It hurts her credibility.

Why not answer/acknowledge the weight loss when asked, but say how she did it is a private matter?

Her public persona is based on the fact that people (mainly women) like her/relate to her. There was no need to lie or mislead, imo - and the fact that she did perhaps says that she wasn't so 'OK' with her weight after all - in spite of always saying it wasn't an issue.

beaniesteve · 01/06/2008 17:12

Who cares - it worked right? Maybe she wanted to be private about it.

Earlybird · 01/06/2008 17:14

Want to emphasise it's not the fact that she had the surgery that hurts her credibility, but rather the fact the she lied and claimed to be losing the weight through diet/exercise.

MsDemeanor · 01/06/2008 17:17

But WHY should she feel obliged to say that she had an operation? I think it is like bullying. She doesn't owe us this information. We don't actually know her - that's just an illusion.
And yeah, saying 'it's private' would have really worked! Then the papers would have left her alone for sure - NOT. There would be endless speculation and prying and 'has Fern got cancer?' 'Is Fern's marriage in trouble?' etc

nancy75 · 01/06/2008 17:19

but why was she asked those questions in the first place? her weight has no impact on how well/badly she presents a tv show, if philip schofield suddenly put on 10 stone would people be interviewing him to ask how many pies he had eaten? would it be front page of the notw?
she comes across as being a lovely person how much she weighs is not anybodies business and neither is how she lost weight.

MsDemeanor · 01/06/2008 17:19

I think this and the Vic Reeves thread shows how people can lose a sense of boundaries around famous people.

BroccoliSpears · 01/06/2008 17:20

Who is Fern Britton?

NotABanana · 01/06/2008 17:22

What on earth are you talking about MSDemeanor?

I said "nice dancing" about his daughter, a simple smile or thank you would have sufficed. I had no interest in talking to him and it was obvious as I started talking to someone else once I realised they were not going to respond.

piratecat · 01/06/2008 17:25

I bought a magazine last week , cos she was on the cover, and it said ' look at Fern's diet'

It was about right for filling a stomach the size of a tangerine.

I do care that it was a lie.

LyraSilvertongue · 01/06/2008 19:07

Piratecat, she released a statement saying she's had the surgery. I've seen a copy if it. So yes, she did have it.

I think she was probably acting responsibly by keeping quiet.

She's too much of a role model to be able to say "I'm off having this done". Its a big thing, and a very personal thing. Would her coming clean in the beginning make it OK for others to do it? Would it make it more of a choice? "If its Ok for FB then its OK for me". And I do think people think like that. Some of them. Fern doing it makes it OK.

The thing is women relate to her. She has weight issues, we have weight issues, she is one of the more 'normal' accessible celebs, and she is on TV nearly everyday, and many people feel they 'know' her.

She took a gamble by keeping it quiet and lost. I think its a shame.

noddyholder · 01/06/2008 19:25

The only thing is it does nothing for the emotional issues and so when the band is removed you balloon again like Sharon Osborne

Ulysees · 02/06/2008 11:03

Anyone just see Fern on this morning admitting she had it done?

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 02/06/2008 11:08

Yes and I'd like to add that she hasn't done anything like promoted a DVD saying "You too could have a body like mine"

I was quite when I saw magazines like Take a Break etc offering her diet tips when she has always shied away from talking about it on This Morning.
