And she told us she lost 3 stone walking the dog and eating healthily.
Now is transpires that he had a gastric band fitted two year ago.

"There was no reason for her to be ashamed" - there is, she is ashamed of being overweight, she is ashamed that she couldn't lose it by bicycling and diet, she didn;t want to to admit any of that. I don;t blame her - I'm ashamed of being overweight, I would be mortified to have weight loss surgery splashed all over the press. And I agree with whomever it was who said that gastric banding is hardly the easy option).

She's a daytime TV presenter and some of you think that because she's earns money doing that that she somehow isn't entitled to keep her secrets.

It might have been nice for her to feel able to be honest. I think its indicative of the hard time we give public faces over their appearance (and particualry the fat ones) that she didn't feel able to.

chenin · 31/05/2008 20:46

Thanks TsarChasm... I now have no money.. I spend it all on clothes in a size 10 (sorry being self indulgent here.. I will stop in a minute!)

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 31/05/2008 20:46

Yes, Helliebean you've done extremely well. I am in awe of your willpower and determination.

You must know yourself how down you get and how hard on yourself you are when you "fall off the wagon" and maybe she didn't trust herself and got to the point where she had no further option than to have surgery.

LyraSilvertongue · 31/05/2008 20:46

She did always bang on about being perfectly happy with her size though...

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 31/05/2008 20:47

Yes lyra - I say that to people too. And shockingly they beleive me.

chenin · 31/05/2008 20:50

Margo... I know all about it, honest! Bear in mind, I have done WW twice, Silhouette twice, Slimming World more times than I care to remember and other stupid expensive weight loss programmes. I know about 'falling of the wagon' big time!

This time I did it on my own... I told no-one I was dieting, I confronted my demons and went for it... biggest achievement ever for me.

learningallthetime · 31/05/2008 20:51

I used to like fern till I heard about this.

If she wanted to have surgery thats her choice, no prooblem with that.

But she choose to give interviews that were a pack of lies. And she got paid for giving them.

She didn't choose to keep quiet, she choose to lie and decieve everyone.

She could have said no to the interviews. Instead she presented a false image of herself.

I've lost all respect for her.

Kewcumber · 31/05/2008 20:54

I suppose I'm surprised that she was obviously considered such an icon to those of you who are so diappointed now - she presents a day time TV programme, quite well from what I've seen nothing more (or have I missed something)

bubblerock · 31/05/2008 20:58

It's a shame that she felt unable to say that she was trying surgery because I'm sure she would have had plenty of support from her viewers. It's nothing to be ashamed of and apparantly it's not an 'easy way to diet'.

schneebly · 31/05/2008 21:10

If I was in her position (and I am about the size she used to be)I wouldn't have told the truth either. Maybe she wanted to use her celebrity status to be a good role model for others and would have felt ashamed to admit to taking what many would percieve as 'the easy route'.

I haven't lost any respect for her.

Earlybird · 31/05/2008 21:14

I guessed that she had the surgery on this thread here from a few weeks ago:

Cheater

cocolepew · 31/05/2008 21:20

Well done Hellibean! . Maybe you should be in all the woman's magazines, telling everyone about your weightloss plan. Dieting the non-cheating way.
I really couldn't care less about Fern, but I'm sure there are people who will be disappointed she didn't do it just through conventional dieting.

WanderingTrolley · 31/05/2008 21:25

How is it cheating maidamess? I really don't understand why people think that - genuinely interested to know what you think.

Earlybird · 31/05/2008 21:27

Makes me think of those celebrities who extol the virtues of natural childbirth, and then turns out they had an epidural and/or a caesarean.

We all make our own personal (and private) choices. But unfortunately the fact that she lied and misled the public intentionally will ruffle some feathers.

I think it's great she lost the weight, as clearly she wanted to. Unfortunately, she now has to deal with the fallout of being dishonest about how she did it.

maidamess · 31/05/2008 21:31

I think its cheating when you re happy for people to believe you lost a lot of weight cyling and eating healthily...when actually its having your stomach artificailly shrunk thats caused it. i don't think the op. in itself is 'cheating', just not being open about it.

WanderingTrolley · 31/05/2008 21:33

Oh I see.

cheekymonk · 31/05/2008 21:37

Yes I always thought she looked good, bigger too. Those twinkly eyes and naughty smile!! She has always been a bit of a role model to me. Good for her, for losing the weight, I say if it makes her happy.

cocolepew · 31/05/2008 21:59

In Womans Or Womans Own the ex BB girl, Alison something, has been writing a diet column. It turned out she had a band fitted a couple of years ago. The press got hold of the story and blasted her, but apparently the bands are fitted with saline(?) and she got it removed as it was uncomfortable, but she can have it reinflated with a simple proceedure.

chenin · 31/05/2008 22:09

cocolepew! Yep did it the 'hard' way but TBH I have sympathy with everyone trying to lose weight in whatever way they do it.

It's all to do with what's going on in your head... it's like anything - you have to be in the right place in your head to do it, and I s'pose I was.

Good on Fern for getting there in the end.. I was just surprised she had surgery, I thought it was through all the cycling and ryvitas!

Earlybird · 01/06/2008 16:16

Do you think this will hurt her popularity/credibility with her audience, or is it just a blip?

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 01/06/2008 16:21

Brilliant Helliebean! What an achievement !

MrsArchieTheInventor · 01/06/2008 16:45

I like Fern Britton. I think she's a positive role model for girls and women regardless of size. I've not read all of this thread and I've not read the newspaper article in question. However, I did listen to the newspaper article review on BBC Breakfast this morning so I have a basic grasp of the facts as the "News" of the World sees to present them.

As far as I'm concerned, her weight loss and how she managed it is her business. From what I can gather, a few years ago she took the drastic step of having a gastric band fitted to her stomach. This would have meant going under general anasthetic, which is risky at the best of times but even more so when you're severely obese. The upside of having the surgery would have been that she might get to see her children have children themselves rather than dying early of a heart attack due to the strain on her heart from the excess fat she was carrying; the downside would have been that when she said goodbye to her children before she went into surgery she knew that there was a higher than average chance that it was the last time they would see her alive.

I think, hats off to her. She's a woman who has struggled with her weight over the years, coupled with working in an extremely size and looks orientated industry with people scrutinising every wrinkle, every blemish, every bad hair day and denouncing her simply for being human. She didn't just lose weight by having a gastric band fitted. If you eat lard you're not going to lose weight, even with a band fitted. Losing weight is a very personal thing and she did it with the help of a gastric band, not because of it. She would have had to eaten very carefully post surgery to ensure that the fod she put into her vastly reduced stomach was actually nutritious and not devoid of any nutrients, otherwise she would have become malnutritioned very quickly. And as for exercise, didn't she cycle round the Red Sea (or somewhere like that) a year or so ago?? The training for that wouldn't have been easy, and I daresay that the buzz that she got from the endorphins kicking in as well as the personally noticable difference to her general health and fitness would have been enough to spur her on to continue exercising, thus losing weight quicker.

I hate articles like this. Women have a rough enough ride as it is and the harshest critics of women are women themselves. In the media, where there's a woman willing to judge there will always be a man right behind her willing to stick the knife in and finish the kill.

Give her a break.

Earlybird · 01/06/2008 16:51

I don't think anyone is judging her for having the band fitted, if that's what she chose/what worked for her. I think the 'issue' is that she repeatedly misled her public and lied outright on quite a few occasions.

If she had been honest, people wouldn't have batted an eyelid and probably would have applauded her.

hunkermunker · 01/06/2008 16:54

Can we get Fern on to do a live chat? [innocent]
