How could this have been allowed to happen?

I can't beleive that the father's wife did not know.

What about all the extra food they must have used, and how on earth could you not know that someone was giving birth to twins (or any of the other children for that matter) in your basement?

Can her own father have let her give birth, unattended and without any pre-or post natal medical help SEVEN TIMES? And to twins as well fgs.

Its just so dreadful, I thought I was hearing things when it was first on the news. I think the father should be locked up in solitary confinement with no window or contact from the outside world until he dies.

CoteDAzur · 28/04/2008 13:02

Solitary confinement is too good for this bastard. He should be locked up with violent rapists for a taste of what he inflicted on his little daughter.

Piffle · 28/04/2008 13:05

just could scream with horror that this could take place.
Is there any counselling alive that can help this woman and the children.
despicable wicked and twisted man. How can the wife play dumb? Suspect an insidious cycle of abuse.
death is too good.

Buda · 28/04/2008 13:07

Incredibly disturbing and tragic story.

I can't get the thoughts of her giving birth alone out of my head.

SSSandy2 · 28/04/2008 13:13

This poor poor woman and her seven dc, especially those who never saw life outside that cellar. It's so sad and horrible

wannaBe · 28/04/2008 13:17

it said in the news though that the children are being held in a secure psychiatric unit. Now obviously I understand they would be undergoing psychiatric assessments after what they have been through, but why a secure unit?

AgonyBeetle · 28/04/2008 13:19

I suspect there's a German to English translation-ism there, wannaBe.

The German words 'sicher' means both safe and secure, but doesn't have the overtones of 'secure unit'.

pillowcase · 28/04/2008 13:19

still reeling from reading that.

horrific.

I think I would actually be able to devise a torture plan for this guy, and watch it through those one-way glass mirrors.

That family, that whole town, may never get over this.

Imagine being one of the siblings who left and led a fairly normal life. Shocking. You think you know someone...

crackinggoodegg · 28/04/2008 13:20

Absolutely dreadful, thank God the evil bastard didn't die before this was discovered.

pillowcase · 28/04/2008 13:21

And I'm thinking of her giving birth alone. Then the fuckwit heading up the stairs, locking the door and leaving here there with a baby just hours old as he heads about his normal life and comes home to dinner with the wifey. This story has made me mad, it really has.

wannaBe · 28/04/2008 13:25

it's at times like this that I think I'd like to believe in a higher power, one who will exact judgement when his life ends...

crackinggoodegg · 28/04/2008 13:25

Every aspect of it is unimaginable - going through all those pregnancies and births and everyday life, occupying each day without anywhere to exercise or walk and no daylight. I hope there's a good support structure for them. So sad as whatever they do to punish the father won't bring all those years back. The children don't know any different, that is their normality now. I hope the media retain some control. No doubt, somebody somewhere is already writing a screenplay.

wannaBe · 28/04/2008 13:29

just said on ITV news that he has confessed to holding her captive and fathering 7 children with her . and the wife says she knew nothing.

Alambil · 28/04/2008 13:33
Sad
wannaBe · 28/04/2008 13:39

the people in the town are apparently questioning how the wife could have not known.

Heated · 28/04/2008 14:31

Agree about this abuse being an insidious circle. Either the wife chose to turn a blind eye to it or was another brutalised 'victim'.

Did no one hear Elizabeth give birth? the cries of the babies?

9 lives ruined. Even the 3 middle children allowed to live a 'normal' life will now know they've lived with a monster and that they are the product of incest and rape.

Unimaginably evil

ButterflyMcQueen · 28/04/2008 14:33

wolfgirl your quote

'The link you provided wannaBe, says that the poor woman had 3 other siblings, all respected and living in the community. So why did the father pick on Elizabeth?.'

same could be said for Shannon and every other victim of abuse who already asks themselves this daily

Wolfgirl · 28/04/2008 14:50

BFM, yes - you're right. when anyone becomes the victim they will ask why me. But maybe - just maybe, for him, there was a reason (like... she looked at him funny, or didnt eat her peas. Who the fuck knows why he picked her. He is sick in the head)

As I say, and others.... this story will unfold. but at the end of the day, he was/is just a sick twisted bastard. Raping an 11 year old. Then locking her away under atrocious conditions, and making her suffer for that length of time. Heck, just a day in solitary would do most peoples heads in, let alone a week, two weeks.... 24 effing years!!!!!!!!!!!

Im not here to scrap btw, or justify my comments, so please... if thats what you are after, try someone else to scrap with.

I, just like everyone else following/reading this horror story, feel numb, shocked and horrified. I do just hope that the best medical, emotional and physcial support are given to the woman and her children.

brookeslay · 28/04/2008 15:46

Totally way out there grim sickening story. I hope he didnt touch the girls who lived up stairs with him though I wouldnt be surprised.
As the two boys and their mother lived in the cellar. The eldest girl the one that is in a coma, without her being taken sick they would still be there. I think he is so twisted that he thought it normal.
Though the wife said she knew nothing wouldn`t you be in the least bit suspious or try and find the daughter who had suposedly sent the letters asking for the three girls to be looked after.

wannaBe · 28/04/2008 15:52

but the daughter apparently wrote a letter saying "don't try to find me" or something similar. And it sounds as if the wife was not her mother, so she wouldn't have that emotional bons/need to find the daughter, iykwim?

Although I still find it hard to believe she didn't know. How could she not have known?

That being said, if it was an old house, then maybe sound wouldn't carry from the basement upwards? maybe?

wannaBe · 28/04/2008 17:23

they've just been talking about this on 5 live. Apparently he had 6 other children .

They spoke to the police chief involved, and he said that he was absolutely convinced that the wife and other people living in the house knew nothing. He said you had to go to the house really to know what it was like, but that the entrance to the basement was well hidden and that he was sure that only the father knew.

also they had someone on from one of the local papers who said that although he was very respected in the community he was also known as being a bit controlling over his family.

Sidge · 28/04/2008 21:27

That is just the most hideous story

It beggars belief how something like this can happen in a so-called civilised society.

On thing I don't understand though - if he fathered 6 children with her (I understand a 7th died) and took 3 back upstairs with him to raise, how could his wife not know? Would you not be a bit curious if your husband appeared on 3 occasions with a new baby that wasn't yours?

It's so very sad.

berolina · 28/04/2008 21:33

He told people she had run away to join a cult and 'left the babies on his doorstep'.

Hideous, sickening story. I don't usually join in these news threads, but of course this is all over the German news, no escaping it really.

I'm as woolly and liberal as they come, but have had my private thoughts about what I would like to do or see done to this man.

MrsWeasley · 28/04/2008 21:33

the were "discovered" outside with notes from the mother saying she couldn't cope with the babies.

Sidge · 28/04/2008 21:37

Huh? So she left at 18 leaving three babies??

It gets weirder and weirder...
