OMG I have just seen this, what awful news

RIP Mark. Hope you are back with your soul mate.

SlartyBartFast · 14/04/2008 10:22

haven't told my dc's yet.

he was a huge influence in dd's artistic ability.
loved SMart

harpsichordcarrier · 14/04/2008 10:28

I found myself pretty moved by this too.
poor man, what a terrible waste.

belgo · 14/04/2008 10:29

This is such a sad story. And such a waste of two young lives.

beaniesteve · 14/04/2008 10:30

"can't help but wonder if the BBC gave him all the support he needed" I am pretty sure they would have. Whether he took that help is another matter. His Grief must have been incredible and perhaps he was feeling guilty too? It must be horrendous to have this kind of thing happen to you, the loss of someone you love together with what may have looed like the loss of his career.

miffymum · 14/04/2008 10:38

Poor Mark. He will be missed. How awful that someone who brought so much pleasure to so many ended up feeling so desperate.

FYIAD · 14/04/2008 10:39

I have found this whole sorry story absolutely heart rending. What a terrible waste.

Twiglett · 14/04/2008 10:39

oh no

marina · 14/04/2008 10:41

I will always remember him gurning cheerfully round the studio to "Big Picture, Small Picture". They always had great music on SMart and SMarteenies and I bet he chose it.
I feel desperately sad for both families. What a wretched tragedy.
I hope his family especially realise how much fun and pleasure he brought to children and mums alike. He was my favourite children's TV presenter

marina · 14/04/2008 10:42

And yes, the no-holds-barred Evening Standard is reporting that he hanged himself in some remote corner of Paddington station

WendyWeber · 14/04/2008 10:45

That was on the Mail website before midnight, marina.

(But Xenia apparently knew about it before even them )

oiFoiF · 14/04/2008 10:47

wendy!

FYIAD · 14/04/2008 10:48

oh please don't

I can't bear it

don't really know why it has affected me so much - after all, people die every day and i didn't know him.

Disenchanted · 14/04/2008 10:49

Ive actully shed tears over this

Its all so sad and tragic

WendyWeber · 14/04/2008 10:51

Sorry, Fio

(Can't switch it off...)

morningpaper · 14/04/2008 11:08

grr, they aren't supposed to dwell of details of the method used

it's really BAD

marina · 14/04/2008 11:14

FYAID, your dd1 is pretty much the same age as ds. Mark Speight is someone we've seen and watched with our PFBs since they were tiny. Could it be that and his manifest sparkly charm and charisma makes you feel you knew him more than some of the more "veiled" presenters on children's TV. You could tell he liked good music and a good party. You could tell everyone he featured/co-presented with, liked him.
I'm not normally unduly upset by sad news like this, but Mark Speight's anguish and lonely end is deeply affecting.
He was also a very fine artist and draughtsman in my own not very educated opinion.

Pitufina · 14/04/2008 11:36

I burst out crying last night when I read that they had found him. Had only seen him once on the telly but was aware f him and he seemed a nice person.
I think the fact that I'm 15 weeks pregnant didn't help!

MissPaulaYates · 14/04/2008 12:01

yes i have cried over his death

I have before with a tv presenter - hence name! I said to dp - Mark was a people person that we could relate to - but also not afraid to show his person in interviews etc

As i said earlier i saw him describing a tortured youth once on tv and have never forgotten his pain then

HonoriaGlossop · 14/04/2008 12:35

marina, you have put what I've been feeling into words perfectly; 'mark speight's anguish and lonely end is deeply affecting'

It is such a waste and so sad that no-one could reach him back from the anguish

FYIAD · 14/04/2008 12:38

thank you for that marina, you are right, as ever.

CrackerOfNuts · 14/04/2008 12:38

God i'm not sure I wanted to know how he'd died.

I told Dd1 as she loved the Smart programme, poor thing looked very confused. I didn't say he'd killed himself, just that he'd been found and sadly wasn't alive.

I find it so weird how upset I was about it tbh.

FYIAD · 14/04/2008 12:39

dd1 heard on the radio that he had died

and said 'do you think it is because of his girlfriend dying? he was so sad his heart broke'

god I could barely drive

ReginaFalange · 14/04/2008 12:54

It is sad my DS loved SMarteenies!

TigerFeet · 14/04/2008 12:59

Such a sad story

Poor bloke, poor family
