I just donated with the DEC site, only £10, but its all have I have

hercyulelog · 31/12/2004 14:22

Just to add £500 will build a new home for a family in Srilanka.

KateandtheElves · 31/12/2004 14:45

Wow! Really Herc? I donated $1000 (I'm incredibly lucky to be financially secure) and it's nice to know that that could be used to build a whole new house!

codswallop · 31/12/2004 14:47

Kate youa rent "lucky" to be finanacially dsecure, dont think anyone woudl begrudge you your money

hi btw ahve been thinkning of you during all this

hercyulelog · 31/12/2004 14:48

Yes. The only trouble is due to politics there have been problems with aid getting to the worst affected areas of srilanka.

hercyulelog · 31/12/2004 14:49

Today is a national day of mourning in srilanka.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 31/12/2004 14:49

pixiefish · 31/12/2004 14:51

dwight yorke donating weeks wages

KateandtheElves · 31/12/2004 14:51

Thanks Coddy.

I do feel lucky at the moment though.

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 31/12/2004 15:38

let's not make this in to a who's donated what competition, we all know any thing that can be spared is greatfully recieved.

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 31/12/2004 15:40

not implying anyone is being competitive just don't want everyone to feel they've done what they can without mentioning the amount

oh dear, that didn't come out right at all, but it is 11.45pmpn NYE here and I have had a drink (trying to forget about it for a few hours)

JanH · 31/12/2004 15:44

Happy Oz New Year then, suzy, in case I don't catch you again before midnight!

NameChangingMancMidlander · 31/12/2004 15:50

Happy New Year Suzy.

I really don't think that who donated what is going to be competitive. We all know that Mumsnet spans a whole range of financial capabilities, after all £5 from one family may well be missed more than £100 from a more affluent family. We are all doing what we can, that is the important thing.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 31/12/2004 15:51

P.S. Suzy, what happened to DingWongMerrilyOnHigh ? That made me laugh out loud everytime I read it

Gwenick · 31/12/2004 15:58

I have to say that I think this terrible tradegy has shown just how compassionate the people of the UK can actually be when they want to.

as you say it doesn't matter how much you give (not going disclose our sum for that reason) but I've seen/heard two act of great kindness in the last few days (of of thousands I know but it's just touching when you hear or see individual genorisity).

  1. Read in the Telegraph of an eldery couple in Leeds who have donated their entire £200 Winter Fuel allowance to the fund

  2. In Morrisons this morning and they've got buckets on all of the checkouts for donations. Little old lady in front of me paid £5.47 for a basket full of Bettabuy (value) products. Put her change away and started to walk away - saw the bucket. Stopped, put her little bag of shopping down and pulled out £20 and put it in the bucket!!!

I've just read that between us all with donations of all sizes from a few coppers in the pot up to £1000's of pounds we've raised £32 million.

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 31/12/2004 16:04

Happy New Year from Western Australia - suppose life goes on doesn't it?

I had to change the name as I didn't feel very festive anymore (and it was all spacedonkey's idea in the first place so she can take the credit)

KateandtheElves · 31/12/2004 16:07

Happy New Year Suzy.

The only reason I mentioned the amount was that it was the amount that Hercules said would rebuild a house in Sri Lanka. Certainly not meaning to be competitive.

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 31/12/2004 16:08

oh Kate I'm sorry I posted that, I really didn't think before I typed - sorry to shit stir on this of all threads

KateandtheElves · 31/12/2004 16:09

No problem Suzy. Have another glass of champagne for me!

Lets hope he's right

dawnie1 · 31/12/2004 16:12

please, please, please let him be right

KateandtheElves · 31/12/2004 16:12

That story is just awful Jan. Her boys are the same ages as my girls. Thank god the older one survived.

JanH · 31/12/2004 16:22
