Love you dearly, FF. XXX

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 29/12/2004 23:09

you got that right, FF

KangaSantaMummy · 30/12/2004 00:04

PUFF

I personally think this thread should keep going to support FF, sarahu and other members who do not want to post their personal experiences

Also there may be more members who are there now or are waiting for news now who would like the support.

I started this because of LOU just as the first news came in on boxing day BUT that was because I had chatted to her there may be lots of others who have been affected that we don't know as they are not regular posters IYSWIM

AS WELL AS put up the numbers

There is a separate thread in SITE STUFF about mumsnet members helping in the new year with donations collectively

cyberhugs to you FF {{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}

Essbee, from what I've seen and read they would just rather have the money. They can then buy whatever supplies are needed there in Asia, probably cheaper and without having the transportation issue.

I know that it seems like you're doing something more practical if you donate actual "stuff". I donated a substantial sum of money earlier today, but I wish there was something I could actually do.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 30/12/2004 00:35

Oh dear, wasn't suggesting this thread shouldn't keep going . Sorry if that's the impression I gave.

((hugs)) to you ff.

I have donated via the DEC website.
I have visited many of the places affected and I am totally stunned. I cannot read a paper or watch the news without crying.
How on earth will they get their lives back together?
this is what REDR are doing to help
The Register of Engineers for Disaster relief recruit not just engineers, but all sorts of other profesionals to help in disasters. I found out about it through an article in the Indy newspaper.

KangaSantaMummy · 30/12/2004 08:06

PUFF I am so sorry I didn't read your post properly it was so late at night

Now I have read it again and I realise that you were saying the opposite of what I thought you were saying

on the news they ave just had sirens going off on koh lak

possibly warning of another quake/wave

OP posts:
tigermoth · 30/12/2004 08:13

The Daily Telegraph front page, Dec 29, had headlines full of the tragedy. But on the lower right hand corner was an advertisment. Headline as follows, capital letters as they appeared, 'have your DAMP PROBLEM solved the clean, green way!'(advert was for a product to prevent rising damp)

Does anyone else find this accidental irony unbelievably insensitive?

tigermoth · 30/12/2004 08:14

oh no, I haven't caiught the news this morning - not another quake?

KangaSantaMummy · 30/12/2004 08:17

the thing is I am not sure if it was live everyone was running from the beach and driving away while siren was going

New alert story is on BBC site.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 30/12/2004 09:50

Thanks KSM .

Bill Clinton has said that 1 or 2 countries should each focus on a particular country affected so as not to duplicate the aid effort and ensure it is spread effectively. This sounds really sensible to me.

marthamoo · 30/12/2004 10:16

I saw on the news that Richard Attenborough's 14 year old grandaughter has died, and his daughter and her MIL are still missing [sad

Twiglett · 30/12/2004 10:18

Puff .. I think in theory the Clinton idea is sound, but in practice I don't think its workable and also there will be some countries who just don't get the help they need

it is best IMHO that the whole area stays in the forefront of the news so that all the world pulls together to help

Hulababy · 30/12/2004 10:23

My mum's friend is supposed to be going on a cruise round some of this area in a few days. At present the travel company will not pull out and are expecting their guests still to go. Too afaraid to lose money I bet

Nutcracker · 30/12/2004 10:26

Can't believe just how upsetting i am finding al this, but have been in tears several times already.

Feel very helpless as i have no money to send, but really want to help

There were piccies in the Mail i think of the kids who have been found with no parents

Hulababy · 30/12/2004 10:29

Nutcracker - I read about that. Children tourists whose parents were missing, all queued up int he embassies getting new passports so they could go home - all alone

I find all this so hard to watch.

Hulababy · 30/12/2004 10:29

Nutcracker - you are helping just by bumping this thread and reminding people of the appeals numbers.

Frizbe · 30/12/2004 10:31

Its tricky isnt it Hulababy, but I think the travel company may be doing the right thing here...if they stop the cruises going, then the locals loose even more of their livleyhood than they have already lost.....as Lou33 mentioned in her post further down about the massage ladies setting up again on the beaches next too the rubble, if they don't work they have no money to buy supplies, in the areas which aren't as hard hit...I imagine in these cases that the cruise will not be going to the flattened areas but will call at ports not as hard hit.....like I said tricky......
